Had my S4 now for under a week now and thoroughly enjoying the drive as most of you are probably as well.

I'm averaging around 20mpg. What MPG are you guys and girls getting on average?

I'm getting 999+ because it hasn't turned up yet
:( was hoping for more than that tho but I'm not bothered I didn't order the car for fuel economy.

I think someone else has started same post a few weeks back with a few different peoples inputs on there's

First few trips only done 150 miles so far but getting around 25 mpg

23 short-term, 21 long term over first 183 miles. The noise is very addictive.

You would need to drive under the same test conditions. The point of MPG figures is not that they are realistic, but that they are all procured under the same test conditions, supposedly allowing comparison between manufacturers. Thus ultimately, they are complete ********.

I understand that. So if all the cars have the same test conditions then it should all be relative. With my Cupra I can get 40mpg if I try hard on my way to work and it's extra urban figure is high 40's I believe.

Don't get me wrong I'm not buying my S4 think I can achieve 48mpg. As previous poster said if I'm that worried I would of got a diesel. Just annoying that's all. I hate keep going to the petrol station

I just got 32.8 on a 60 mile trip .... drove like a bishop

Wot's the point of a sporty car if you have to drive like granny......

This why I bought a 272 diesel you can blast round not worrying at all and still get 46 mpg and I don't believe that over the ground there would be much different' s between the s4 or the 272 diesel at all .

Won't get much better than mate but again...the S4 is a compromise. Just enjoy it haha.

It's all about the noise and thrill not mpg .it was a test ! The wind in my hair with the countryside a blur .......can I stay...have I pulled .

Best long term so far is 31.5mpg. Yes, I can get close to 47mpg in efficiency, cruising to work at around 50mph on a very flat, straight-ish road. Yes I have stints of hitting the redline in dynamic (OMG the noise) and drive enthusiastically when the wife isn't in it.

The point of the S4 is not that you drive it like a hooligan all the time but that you can choose to when the occasion demands it and generally embarrass anyone trying to keep up. Like that BMW 5 series the other day. Oh dear, the poor guy.

In the interests of science, I specced up a 272 diesel A4 Avant and came within £1400 of my S4 (baring the S4 exclusive alloys, Super Sport seats and other S4 goodness), so thats about £35 a month difference on PCP. Then I looked at some figures and yes, the diesel has more torque but over a much narrower range (S4 starts lower and goes much higher so arguably more useful). The diesel weighs 20Kg more and diesel fuel costs more to buy (currently).

So the question is, if the cars are relatively close in cost and performance, why would you not buy an S4? I'm quite happy sacrificing 15mpg on one side for all the fun on the other.

People kind of buy this car with a 'best of both worlds' mentality. Not everybody. I didn't. I'm working my way upto the RS4. But, the S4 is a fantastic car. Great performance and superb interior. The RS3 is a good option for epic performance and half decent mpg return too. Diesels, as posted above, are just not that far off something more performance focussed (price wise). So you're totally right...why 'wouldn't' you buy an S4 over the TDI?

Diesels also recently have had a lot of bad press. And I believe in the so not distant future diesel car owners will be penalised by the government some how.

I agree with most of the comments for the S4. Like the comment on a youtube video. "It's an athlete in a gentleman's suit".

I think people have answered their own questions here ,if performance is similar then ,in my opinion I would have the 15 mpg ,thing is if I drive carefully that's nearly 20-25 mpg more .
I agree rs4 lot faster it's worth it as it's in a different league altogether.

Wouldn't agree that they are similar. In my case the S5 is considerably better than the 3.0TDI A5. Mainly because I love the supercharged engine over a turbo, but appreciate that's a moot point on the new B9...

But you are neglecting all the negatives of a diesel that a petrol doesn't have. If you only do short commutes the diesel is completely the wrong choice and will likely cost you much more in repair bills due to EGF and DPF failures. If I have to go out of my way to go on long journeys at high revs to ensure the DPF stays in good condition for as long as possible, then any fuel savings are quickly diminished.

Then there is the difference in power delivery. I personally prefer a much linear and smoother power delivery right across the rev range, not a narrow and high torque burst low down. The sound also cannot be ignored. At idle and low revs, it's beautifully refined and quiet, and has a great grunt when you put your foot down. I'll accept that the V6 diesel sounds alright when giving it the beans, but at idle/low revs it's horrid...

For me, not only is a diesel not appropriate given the amount and type of miles I do, I also would happily sacrifice 10-20MPG to not have any of the downsides of diesels. Priorities are performance and engine sound. Not MPG.

Then there is the rapidly changing public opinion of diesels in general and the effect that will have on residuals and the faff of dealing with ad blue....

Just my 2ps worth...

So on the 300 mile trip to wales I got 30.8mpg, since being in wales its low 20's but damn the roads are nice and twisty I just can't help myself :rockwoot:

Although the petrol stations are as frequent as I hoped, and the car is dirty as hell!

average 18.7 mpg on 700 miles
i'm alright with that considering the fun and noise.

Since someone mentioned a 5 series... I was rolling along a dual carriageway the other day in the outside lane and someone came up behind me pretty quickly and stuck there. As there was a roundabout coming up (on a fairly steep incline) I was sure I'd lose him when I deployed all the horses on the other side. And I was right. Tucked himself into the inside lane after a bit of an attempt to keep up. No surprise I left him for dead... until he passed me some time later and it turned out it was an M5. Now I think it was either a badged up soot chucker of some sort or it was broken but it did leave me wondering. Not a current model M5 but probably the previous generation.

Friend of mine has a 66 plate M5, in the bends I catch him, on the straight not a chance!

I managed 37mpg coming back from Liverpool last week. Was driving like a saint though. Averaging about 27mpg long term.

An S4 isn't wrong neither is a 272ps tdi just enjoy either/both and be glad it isn't a Prius

V10s we're pretty heavy back then. Goes to show though I destroyed a 1st gen R8 V10 in my B8.5 S4. But I think it was just down to better driving. I was still gobsmacked though. This B9 is next level.

There is mate. From new, the S4 is thirsty. It beds in though and is slightly better than my B8.5
