Are the RPMs generally high in cars with S-Tronic and gear changes are bit late when just generally cruising around?

When am doing around 70 on the motorway the RPM is over 2000 and gears seem to change when the needle hits arond 2 when I am just cruising around town

The gear changes would be dependent on load rather than rpm, although I'm sure rpm plays a role in this too - I'm not an expert :) This is why even in D it will change up closer to 5k if you floor it.

The stock DSG ECU software is a bit too eager to change into 6th under light load, which makes for an uninspiring drive. You can get a DSG software map to address many of the drivability issues most people experience.

I definitely felt an improvement after getting my box mapped by @Rick @ Unicorn Motor Dev. last year.

I got mine mapped by Shark when they did my ECU map for the above reasons. A lot of average speed cameras in Nottm so I had my box mapped so when in 'D' mode it will not go into 6th at 30 mph, then the change point was changed enough to stop it hunting up and down the gears at around the 30, 35, 40 mph marks. Before the map, it would choose 6th at 30 mph, then the smallest press of the gas pedal would change it down to 5th again before it accelerated, its just annoying whilst it hunts up and down from 5th to 6th to 5th, etc, etc.

my problem is the opposite, it changes gear from 2nd - 3rd - 4th bit late near the 2000rpm mark when just cruising

Just wondering Leshkin, how much did you pay for the dsg remap? Looking to do this myself at unicorn motor. Understand this also increases the amount of torque available to the car, wouldn't this be a concern considering how much the dsg are to replace?

It was 500, but that included a few hours of dyno time and an upgrade of my engine ECU from Stg2+ to current setup as well as map switching facility.

The increase in torque comes from the ECU map, the DSG map just raises the electronic limiter and I think it also increases the force with which the plates are squeezed to help it deal with the increased torque. I would say that DSG map is a must for even a stg1 car just for drivability improvement alone.
