Pardon the pun.

I'm yet to formally introduce myself. I have posted a few times without saying much about my car or history.

I am the proud owner of a a Misano red 14 plate S3 Sportback S-tronic (promise will post some pics) and have been since the end of Oct 2016. I bought used with only 14500 miles on the clock of £25k - I work for a large financial institution and got a good deal on a used PCP plan with work. Couldn't justify the cost of a brand new Audi to my better half! The spec is pretty basic, however I am more than happy with the car and it's my first ever performance vehicle.

Previous cars have been BMW 330CI M Sport, Land Rover Discovery, Ford Escort, Ford Focus ST170, Vauxhall Nova and a few more to boot. I also own a Honda Civic.

I decided to have a Revo air filter fitted to give it some extra sound, which I can say has been fantastic. Wasn't going for extra horses, just some additional noise. At times it sounds like I have a demon living in my glove box, which I happen to love.

The car is under warranty until April this year and so today I thought I'd take it into my local Audi garage to have a passenger seat rattle looked at. They have now fixed this problem which I'm delighted with. I also mentioned that the S-tronic box seemed a little jerky on the downshifts, which they concluded needed a software upgrade which they'd only do if I took off the air filter (fair enough).

Do you think it's wise to do this? It would be free under warranty, would just need someone to take off and put back the air filter as I ain't got a clue.

The car has now done just below 17k mile I noticed from the cars service interval tracker that it's due an inspection and oil change in around 140 days and the service technician mentioned this. He then also mentioned that I'd be due a brake fluid change and my S-tronic fluid replaced and said all in all this would be around £1200 worth of work?? He did say he could try and get me a discount on the labour... something like £85 an hour rather than £130 an hour...

So I went onto the main Audi website and looked at the servicing costs etc. for an S3 and did my own calculations which came to around £700 if I did get all these completed.

Do the servicing costs on the Audi website include labour?

I'm under no illusion that I've bought a performance car, and would expect to pay more for maintenance, however this does seem excessive?

One last question - does it really affect the cars value if you don't go to Audi direct and just use an indie? I know at the end of my PCP I just give the car back, but I may want to part ex in the hope I have some equity to use as a future deposit.

Apologies for the long post. Have to say this forum has been excellent in building my knowledge of my Audi and cars in general and any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Shop around is all I can say............ but seems expensive to me.... unless they wont honour warranty because of the air filter...

Thanks - yeah they said they'd not do the gearbox software update unless I removed the air filter, which I can get done so isn't too much of a problem. I'm surprised the service technician said I needed the S-tronic oil changed at 20k miles, even though the website advises no more than 38k mile...

Ridiculous they won't do a software update with a aftermarket filter...I would find a different dealer on that principle alone....

Those fixed priced service costs are only for cars 3yrs or older. Those include labour. If it's £700 based on that, then try and shop around for better price. The S tronic should be serviced at 40k and the brake fluid every 20k. I wouldn't pay more than £50 for a brake fluid change! Get that done at an indie and maybe the service with Audi? Nothing stopping you doing the service at an indie either though, just keep a receipt and list of parts they used.

1st Question = Dunno!

2nd question = Prices quoted seem to be the all in cost you will pay, barring any additional work. Depending on the age of your car, the prices are here in this link:

https://www.audi.co.uk/owners-area/servicing-maintenance-mot/fixed-price-services.html#/fixPrice

For your info, i just had an MOT, Major Service, Brake Fluid change & Inspection and it came to £429 by Taunton Audi.

S-tronic fluid change for your car on the website is stating £225 & Major service is £399 & Brake Fluid change is £59 so seems like your getting ripped off? better informed people will give you more specific info as mine is a 1.6tdi so costs might be less!

3rd Question = Thats a can of worms that everyone will have an opinion. your giving your car back so i wouldn't care. But i would check with the rules of the PCP plan you have. Might be a certain term stating you have to have dealer servicing.

Thanks for the replies - thought I was going mad but my instincts were right then... Do these servicing technicians get commission on selling servicing?

Out of interest - can an indie do the software update or would that have to be Audi? They would obviously charge me but thinking it might be better to do that and not have to pay a mechanic to remove and replace the air filter... Thinking the air filter might have been more hassle than it's worth, but it sounds awesome!

Take it to another dealer and don't even mention it.

It's irrelevant.

Everyone knows that an air filter with a marginally lower ΔP will damage the gearbox. Obvious really...

Oh hang on, no, that's snow mobiles and Haagen Dazs I'm thinking of. Engine air filters have precisely ****** all to do with gearbox performance or longevity. Amazing they let people with no knowledge loose on these things really. If I tried to do my job with that sort of knowledge gap of my subject material, I'd have been an oily stain on the concrete years ago.

Go find yourself another dealer. You'll thank yourself for it.

ΔP... Engineer by any chance?

Likewise.... What's your speciality??

I'm building services currently doing some HV actually!

Stay safe then. I've spent the last 25 years working with high voltage electrical systems, and it still scares me sh*tless. Should have been a Mech. Eng!

I was an Audi tech for 4 -years.

They don't get commission for upselling.

Ask them why you neee to remove the air filter and laugh at the response they give. (As I'm sure it will be funny)

Your stronic doesn't need to be done until 38k

Brake fluid is every 2 years

A full service with stronic should be no moe than £550 anyway.

Thanks

Is it likely they'll ask me to remove the air filter when I go for the service, even if it's out of warranty?

I'm in 2 minds whether or not to bother with the s tronic software update...

I'm no engineer but know enough to understand an induction kit makes feck all difference.

Almost choked when I read that!
