These All weather lights which have "replaced" fog lights then.
I know that they come on when you steer hard right or left and I think that I can programme them not to do this at all.
But on these dark mornings I've noticed that they appear to come on as I slow down whilst approaching at junction in a straight line.
Anyone know any more about the operation of these things.
I will read the manual too at some point soon but just wanted some collective thoughts.
I was never a fan of these things coming on and off as folk steered round roundabouts etc previously as i thought it looked daft especially as that was what indicators are for but they are handy on the 15mph back road from my house in the dark.

I've been wondering if they use navigation data and "know" when you're approaching a junction? There definitely seems some intelligence behind their operation, I don't have the matrix option.

From the manual

Alt.-weather lights*
Applies to vehicles with LED headlights
Press the button ~ Fig. 50:
~C> - All-weather lights (in place of the front fog light switch ~D.)
On vehicles with all-weather lights, t he front lights are adjusted automatically so that the headlights on your own vehicle do not blind you, for instance when driving on a wet road.

They do not operate on turning the wheel

These are the static cornering lights, which are also on the Xenon lights that you can add to the Sport model, but I think not with the ones that come standard with the S-Line (that was pre facelift though). I don't know why you would think they would do the same thing as indicators though - they are there so you can see what you are steering into, not so that others can see what you are doing! Indicators don't really light up the area so you can see. Personally I find them incredibly useful and love having them.

Yes, as far as I'm aware they do use the navigation to know about junctions (pre facelift - my current A3 does this).

Audi Bairn has an FL S3 with LED headlights. No cornering lights are available, only All Weather Lights.

Pretty sure they do light up with steering, or at least they do when I'm maneuvering in my garage. If I turn the wheel right, it immediately lights the area immediately to the right, and dims back down after a few seconds if I don't move.

If I push the all weather lights button, the dipped beams dim appreciably. The main beams do follow turns in the road, but this might only be on matrix lights.

On my pre-FL LED headlights, if the lights are set to Auto without the all weather selected, the cornering lights work at parking speeds. Very good!

With the all weather selected, they light up the sides of the road beautifully. I think they are very good. Only downside is that they are speed sensitive, and swith off at 120km/h, and come back on once below 100km/h. OK on normal roads, but a bit annoying on an Autostrada with a 130km/h limit! (Obviously this would not be an issue in the UK... Fnar Fnar!!)

Grant is that not a function of Matrix only (side to side) .....as Matrix is not available in Canada or the USA due to regulations

Me either mate. But it also happens on a dark bit of road as I'm slowing on the main road to turn left on another back road.

I've maybe not explained properly as I'm aware they don't do the same as indicators.
My point is that, (for example) someone enters a U.K. roundabout and turns left first (left fog light comes on) then steer right (right fog light comes on) then steers left again to leave the roundabout (left fog comes on). With all these lights coming off and on its a needless distraction from the indicators especially on cars which use the separate fog lights. Where I've found them useful is the dark back roads especially since track.

Mine seem to. We have a large driveway and when I drive up to the house then turn hard right to swing in front of the house the right one comes on.

No idea, I haven't driven a non matrix facelift car yet. The PFL with LED's did the same thing though.

Audi Bairn, I am really confused ....nothing unusual for me!!!.... you have non Matrix LED lights?...the right one comes on, what right one. You are using the All Weather function?
Matrix has more LED lamps than standard LED...is this what is turning on when you move the steering wheel.
This has come up on a US site and there apparently is no cornering light function with the FL LED, as there was before. I can not verify this myself as I am still waiting to receive my car.

Ha ha me too! I think you've assumed most of it correctly.
I do have LED headlights, not Matrix. Headlights are permanently switched to Auto.
At night the headlights are on but the All Weather lights supplement them by coming on at certain times like I've referred to. I could understand if they were only steering sensitive at low speeds. But not sure what black art is at work to make them come on at other times. Nav might be the answer as mentioned by @Gordo77

Hmmmm the plot thickens for North American spec cars......thanks to everyone and my apologies if I had it wrong for UK cars on cornering lights

... incorrect. How do they also know which direction you are turning?

The static cornering lights do come on at junctions when you use your indicators.

They are a great feature. So are active Xenons.

Oh my! You're telling me the FL matrix lights are different to the pre-FL? Well I never!! LOL
Nope, I'm not telling you anything. Apparently you already know everything...

Have you noticed if both of them are coming on. Or is it only the one on the side you are indicating. I know that is the way our PFL A3 works.

The fog lights switching on/off are not the same thing as static cornering lights.

I have noticed the fog lights doing this on 2 cars recently. As far as I know this is an owner modification through VCDS. Manufacturers do not use fog lights as cornering lights as it is distracting and looks like a fault.

??

It was a joke ;-)

On Pre-FL LED these lights are inside the unit somewhere like on this photo:

I'm sure they both come on approaching junctions but I'll check tomorrow but I'm sure the left one came on whilst indicating right so I'll keep an eye on the right one at the same junction.

I'm not sure this is the case. I see it on multiple makes of cars, not necessarily Audi. And not ones the drivers would mod. Loads of them.

@Audi Bairn if you get the chance, try comparing their behaviour to Mrs AB's TT... they definitely behave different to my old TT, but like you I can't always figure out what they are doing and when!!

Yeah will do.
The TT defo does it at low speed when turning but not driven it enough in the dark to compare with mine yet.
Some non-scientific testing required I think

It's not the fog lights coming on (especially not given you have the all weather lights). Some other brands do this as a cheap option but it's crap really as fog lights face forward, not sideways (and you aren't supposed to use them when visibility is more than 100m anyway). On the A3 it's a separate bulb within the headlight housing that does actually point out to the side. I've not noticed them doing this on a roundabout myself, perhaps because they are linked with the nav, but with them pointing different directions anyway it's unlikely to lead to any mix ups or distractions with the indicator.

If you slow down near a junction they both come on I think - perhaps only if there is a junction on both sides though. If you start to steer or you are indicating it should just light up that side. It's not something I've paid too much attention to either, I'll see if I can work it out by watching them.

I'm not sure this is the case. I see it on multiple makes of cars, not necessarily Audi. And not ones the drivers would mod. Loads of them.

This is correct - it's a factory setting by other brands as a 'poor mans' version of the cornering light. It annoys me though as I think it's technically illegal (they'll usually get around it by calling them 'driving lights' or something instead of fog lights in the manual), it doesn't work as well and it looks crap anyway.

Right, checked this morning as i approached a t-junction on a remote road. I didn't indicate right as i normally do (just to see what happened).
Both All Weather lights came on.
Steering hard left out of my drive the left one came on only.
I might even read the manual tonight :grimacing:

I've noticed they come on without fail when manoeuvring at slow speed, whether you just turn slowly in one direction or quickly from one to the other. They are 110% manouvering lights and I am interested to catch mine out coming on approaching a junction.. that would impress me!!

I think I might have seen mine come on just driving along a straight road, but slowing down to under 20mph...? It might have been because there was a junction ahead tho.

Pretty clever anyway!

The actual button function is also very good. I used them a couple of times in the TT in thick dense fog. They do a great job at cutting through thick fog and lighting up the road ahead.

That I thought was the function of All Weather Lights. Press the button and the main headlights are reduced in illumination to reduce glare and the Weather lights are activated and function as fog lights...low broad illumination.
