Evening all, not new to the forum but this is my first C6 A6 and in honesty I'm very impressed with it! 2.7 tdi S-Line Avant! The spec is amazing and I'm really with it apart from the whole stereo/mmi doesn't work, the control buttons don't light up, the screen doesn't fire up, nothing! So I'm looking for some pearls of wisdom for perhaps fuse locations/diagnosing the problem etc! Thanks in advance for all of your help!

You need the car scanned with VCDS, make sure to do and optical scan
 
As you car is a Pre-facelift, check for signs of water damage on the amp that sits in the rear quarter on the N/S
The washer pipe was prone to splitting and causing issues

I've got an optical loop bypass coming from tps tomorrow, is it worth trying unit at a time?

No the bypass is not going to help, because you are getting an electrical error on the control head. From that scan either your control head is dead or the gateway is faulty, but my money would be on a faulty control head. Check all the fuse on the passenger side of the dash. If they look good, the remove the glovebox and see if the control head is still there. Someone could have removed/disabled it due to a faulty module draining the battery.

Which part do you mean by the control head mate? The screen or the control panel with the buttons? Or what does it look like mate please

Looks like this behind the glove box, it's the main mmi module, both the screen & control panel connect to it.

That is what I believe the control head is the infotainment can-bus and without that unit you cannot perform a ring bus diagnostic,everything will just say error.

Also mate quick question, so what are the 3 boxes in the boot of the car,

Bose amp
Nav DVD drive
What's the 3rd one?

Not plug & play, most will have component protection which is mainly dealer only, but some garages may be able to remove cp. There are some units on ebay, where cp has been hacked but no idea if these work correctly.

The other module is the radio.
 
Also make sure you are certain it is the control head at fault, check the fuses & plugs going to all the modules.

For example using this cable and connect between the control head & can-gateway, this will then isolate the entire MMI system, at least then you are 100% sure it's the control head, as you could use the loop cable on the other end. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOST-fibe...645839?hash=item33c2ddc4cf:g:LxEAAOSwdIFXzbmE

So checked all the fuses, plugs etc, all seem good mate! Are there any hidden fuses anywhere? A few times it's popped up at start AUDI MMI then it goes black again which would suggest fuses are ok?

MMI fuses are on the left hand side of the dash and in the boot on the right.
 
As you have said the screen starts up then dies, it may not be the control head! My concern now is your VCDS version it looks to be a hacked version so I'm unsure is the optical bus scan is being reported correctly. best get some optical cables and start isolating the modules.

I didn't realise that as the vcds belongs to a friend, so when you say optical cables and isolating modules, could you elaborate please mate? I did try last night with the tool that came from tps, tried the 3 in the boot, cd changer in the glove box, are there any other units in the system?

There are 3 modules behind the glovebox, ,can gateway control head & CD-Changer. However you cannot try the Control head as that is the main MMI module.

To test the control head on it's own you would need to use this cable http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOST-fibe...645839?hash=item33c2ddc4cf:g:LxEAAOSwdIFXzbmE and connect the loop back to the other end, that would confirm if the control head is working correctly.
 
So, got my MMI alive again! Minus a few bits! So took the passenger front seat out and it turns out my Bluetooth control unit had its own indoor swimming pool! Bridged that, still no MMI, so bridged a few more and it turns out the Bose amp is dead also! But it came to life! Tried a standard amp and sure enough, sound, only from one door but I've got sound! Bluetooth I can live without for now, Bose I cannot! So I'll get the amp sent away to a repair service I've found and see what happens!

That is the problem when using cracked VCDS it should have never given that scan with electrical errors on every module. You should have got something like this, with faults shown in your pictures would have indicated a control head fault

So it's possible to use a standard amp just have the component protection removed?

Yes, just get the scan checked with VCDS again, if it comes up with a component protection error, then get a Audi dealer to remove it.

Where/how will I know if it's component protection?

VCDS will bring up and error code, that will clearly state component protection (if that is the fault)

Unfortunately on these cars without VCDS scans it's all guess work, and experience of working on them and looking on the forums.

If you plan to keep the car for any length of time then I would invest in VCDS, it will save you £££ and the genuine cables hold there value very well.

Well fingers crossed I dropped the nose amp off yesterday to a local electronics expert who said he would look at it and get back to me if it can be repaired or not! So today he rang me back and is happy to repair my amp and I'll have it back within 2 days, asked me to take my car along so he can make sure it all works fine when it's done! I'm a happy man now!

So collected my BOSE amp today and it all works perfectly! A fantastic service and a very fair price for the particular fault with my amp. Plug and play and even came with a 12 month warranty! Out of curiosity how many speakers does the Bose system in the C6 A6 avant?
