S3 stolen Lastnight

In general the thieves want an easy take, they want to reduce the risk of being caught to a minimum. So no or little noise and as few minutes as possible.
So anything you can do to get them to steal some one elses easier to take S3 is worth while. As you can see CCTV is of little use as they wear generic black clothes with scarves or balaclavas.

But house alarm, with blinking light in a prominent place, locked bollard on the drive, bright security lights attract attention, a secure bolted dead locked front door, a disclock or other device, last thing they want is to spend half an hour sawing a device off.

But there's always exceptions, if they want it and their prepared to break the door down and use aggravated vehicle taking then they'll get it. But with a house alarm blaring (giving you time to phone 999) or one connected to the old bill they are unlikely to want to hang around.

You can never be certain but you can make life difficult.

A good composite door will stop them kicking it in. The 2 best ones are made by Rockdoor and Solidor. Both are PAS 24 and Secured by Design certified.

Anything else is a waste of money.

It's a sad day when you have to go to these lengths to protect your family and possession but is certainly worth the effort.

Agree. I've gone for one of these along with tamper proof and drill proof lock etc.

Agree with the above anti snap drill locks are good in this case the OP forgot to double lock the door think he's talking about the double glazed doors you can tell from outside if you can push the handle down its not double locked so can be opened with minimal effort

I'm wondering if you have an obvious anti-theft device in plain sight (e.g. disklok, etc...) if it doesn't create a situation where potential thieves would just damage your car out of spite... :-(

I remember the vecta immobiliser, I guess our OEM immobilisers did for them. Thank goodness there's no theft nowadays thanks to them..... Oh wait :(
I had something similar on my 1st ever car (Mk1 Golf GTi) and also had Yale locks on the doors! The only problem I ever had was an attempted break in where drivers window was smashed. Car was parked on a dark road but nothing taken ... I like to imagine though their confusion when they bust the window but still couldn't open the door!

TX.

Personally, I think the best deterrent is a good front door and a steering wheel lock. If you can, keep the steering wheel lock key separate from your car keys when in-doors...bit of a pain but it makes it harder to find for them.

Burglar alarms are good but thieves are so quick and quiet, they'll usually know where the weak spot is, where to find what they need once inside the house and if they don't find it within 5 minutes, they'll be gone by the time the police responds to the alarm.

Double glazing throughout, lockable windows, thick multi-lock (whatever it's called) front/rear doors and steering wheel lock - job done.

If you start thinking like that you may as well just keep the keys on the drivers seat and let them take it!

Smart water marking on both the house and the car can be had for c.£50 a year for the subscription.

Bomb blast protection on vulnerable windows makes them almost impossible to break through. A big set of patio door sized windows can be armoured up with a transparent bomb blast film for about £300. I had this done to my old patio doors (since replaced with a complete new set.). When I got new doors I had a go at getting through the old ones before they were ripped out. Took me 10 minutes to make a hole big enough to put an arm through, and if have been there all day and been shredded to pieces if I'd managed to make a hole big enough to climb through.

High quality specialist locks will defeat those who have trained themselves in the surprisingly easy art of bumping. Use locks not normally seen in the UK to really baffle them.

Bond the Windows into the frames. Most scumbags prefer removing the glass rather than breaking it. A high strength bond makes this almost impossible without a lot of time, patience and tools.

A very loud alarm, that's turned on to guard unused floors at night.

A big dog, preferably one of those ugly brutes that look like a shark and are essentially a row of teeth, four legs and an an ar5ehole. Typical English breed.

I find the wheel lock is the best deterrent there is. Thieves want a quick getaway and this prevents it.
I remember reading a article about a convicted car thief who stated that he would avoid the cars with the steering locks.

Costs £30-90 depending on brand and I use one on my s3, its parked on the street on a area rife with German car thefts.... So far I still have a car.

I popped into a showroom on my way home today to take a look at Rockdoors. They are some impressive doors!

Not cheap mind, at c.£1k for my house, but I think I'll get one ordered as my current composite door is draughty as hell.

Problem with my front door is it has the glass fillets either side so the opening is huge. Tempted to swap in future to one extra wide unit (like me).

I would definitely say no to this line of thinking - at least for professional thieves.

They steal cars for the money. End of.

Vandalising a car just opens up the chance of them being caught for zero £££s.

Rockdoor can do these too.

lol funny enough I had a look yesterday, looking at £1000-£1400 fitted and dressed. If you go on their website you can build the door and see what it would look like, plenty of options.

When a car in my long ago past was broken into on my driveway I reported it to the police. This was when they were happy to come round and talk to you about it!!!!!
At that point the police officer said, the only way to put off a burglar is to have a dog that barks. Fortunately mines is a very protective bitch (dog). She goes mental the second the door goes, or most of the time when someone steps onto the driveway. And yes, she will show her teeth when the need arises. Cold callers take a huge step back as she doesn't just bark at the door she flies at the door from 10 ft away and hits it half way up the glass (5ft). Other than that she's as soft as putty. :whistle2:

And once we have all this security in place all we have to be aware of is car jacking, even on our own driveways

Sod that, I'd rather stop them getting in to start with, that's the way to guard your loved ones. If I could keep pots of boiling oil ready over the front and back doors I would, and if happily electrify the outside of my house if only it were legal. In the meantime I'll continue to engineer security improvements everywhere I can. For instance, I'm now exploiting Mother Nature by growing climbing roses along the top of my garden walls. Not only do they look beautiful and small wonderful, but they're thorny gits that will merrily tear tattered fleshy DNA loaded lumps from the scrotums of any thieving scumbags that fancy climbing my wall to get to my stuff.

That's nuts mate, never make things easy for them.

On the plus side, your car is probably less likely to get nicked as it's an exclusive colour and there aren't many about in that shade and therefore stands out a bit.

P.S I was looking at a riviera blue SB before I got my saloon but the stealer wasn't budging on the price so I walked away.

Man it's ruthless over there in the UK.

You guys need to invest in a guard dog, like a pitbull, and keep your keys in your pants or underwear.

I hardly see any, in fact I haven't seen any Audi thefts on the American Audi forums. I guess the brand is not as sought after by thieves much over here.

It's not that bad. I've been living and working in the rougher parts of east London for twenty years, and suffered only 1 broken window and a stolen stereo.

Pit bulls are illegal here after the dangerous dogs act, and even if they weren't, they're the sort of dog that indicates a certain social status. Essentially, it's a dog that's much more likely to be owned by the scumbag stealing the car than by the guy who actually owns the car...

There is another solid wood locked door in-between us and the front door. I have anti everything locks on the front door the way i see it if they want it they will have it end of. i would much rather they took it that way its insured i have gap too so there is no big loss.
Part of the reason i got a bright one was that very reason, parts off a black s3 will go on a black a3.. can't see there being many a3's in riviera so cuts one reason to steal it out.

Just because it's more relevant to this thread than the one I originally posted it in, here's a quick and dirty analysis of the claim that the S3 is britains most stolen car.

There's roughly 18250 S3's of all variants and all years Registered with the DVLA, so according to the guardian about 150 per year will get lifted in the next 12 months, or 1 every 2 and a half days...

The second most stolen car in the uk is apparently the defender, because now you can't buy a new one everybody desperately wants a slow noisy unreliable old wartime vintage farm tractor with all the creature comforts of a dungeon.

The DVLA lists 106,000 of the old rust prone jalopy's on their books, so the guardians stat would mean over 600 a year are going to 'new owners', that's nearly 2 a day, or 4 times the number of S3's...

I would be interested in the breakdown between Saloon, SB and HB. Suspect that some of the 4 doors are stolen to order as quick getaway cars etc.

Makes sense if four guys do a bank job they don't want to wait for two of them to get into the back of a 3 door before they jump in the front to drive off :D
