B9 Economy

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum, I've read quite a bit, but only just created a user account!

I'm in the process of deciding spec on my new car, I was going to go for the 2.0TDI 190BHP S Line Saloon. But I'm curious to see what engines everyone has and what MPG people are getting? As the 2.0 TFSI is a couple of grand cheaper & economy isn't actually that bad!

I've got the 2.0TDI 190 S-Line that you're thinking of and 1100 miles in on a mix of roads, I'm averaging 48. Can hit 60-62 on a 70mph A-road cruise.

Really, I get that from my 1.4 petrol a3. I rather think you might need to look at the wider picture. Good economy from a diesel is no good unless you do alot of mileage each year http://www.whatcar.com/advice/buying/do-i-choose-petrol-or-diesel/

My previous car was a 1.8 petrol that averaged 33mpg, so it's all good news to me so far.

I'm in the process of changing jobs at the moment so I'm not entirely sure what my mileage is likely to be at this stage, hence why I'm considering the petrol engines! I doubt i'll be doing more than 12k a year - at this stage, so I don't know which would be better!

That is an interesting read! This bit is the main standout section:
"As an example, the Fiat 500 diesel does nearly 14mpg more than its 1.2 petrol sister, but its purchase price is £2400 higher. On economy alone, owners would need to cover more than 130,000 miles in the diesel before the fuel economy/purchase price equation levels out. Once servicing costs are factored in, the petrol car builds its advantage, ending up more than £900 cheaper to run over three years or 36,000 miles."

3.0 Tdi 272 and averaging 40.8 over about 700 miles, very happy with that.
I don't do big miles but I wanted the performance so other than an S4 there wasn't a suitable petrol.

Done 4000 miles in mine now, I have the same engine but stronic, mixture of mways, and crawling trips into brum, The trip computer says a lifetime average of 48.1, and the short trip home in 50mph roadworks today touched 60. But think the real test is how much out of a tank, I have 54 litre tank but usually stops at 50 when filling due to a reserve I think, and usually get 540 miles from the tank. Which works out at about 48mpg, which is much better than the auto b8 it replaced.

Averaging 49 after 3500 miles with my 2.0 tdi quattro. I'm permanently in economy mode unless I have passengers I'm showing off to or I'm on my last drive from work before needing to fill up, at which point I pop it into dynamic and go wild

Yep done 1600 miles and I'm at 48mpg. On a cruise I've hit 60mpg. Car is in comfort. Apart from a stretch of bypass with 4 roundabouts all about 800 yards apart whern on my commute home I stick it in dymanic

I'm getting 46 mpg with my Ultra sport, have done just over 1000 miles now. My commute is quite hilly through the peak district really is a game of two halves, into work I am lucky to top 40 but on some of the downhill stretches I an in the mid 60's. Am looking forward to a long trip down to the French alps in three weeks to see what economy I get. I almost exclusively have the car in dynamic.

Looks like all the diesels are extremely eco then! Seems although most are averaging 50mpg!

Be interesting to see what the guys say who have the petrol engines!

I got 63mpg out of a 190 Sport I had a lend of. Not been on a long drive in my S line yet but it's getting around 45mpg around town.

Just to put thing into perspective, my commute of around five miles, and however I drive my car the average is stuck at 42mpg. On a run I can easily exceed 55mpg and have easily seen 60+

I would be more interested in what the petrol 2.0l are getting....

I'm getting about 50mpg in my 190 sport ultra 2.0 TDI.

On cruise back from dealer A/motorways I was seeing 60mpg.

Expecting it to get better - I'm still under 200 miles on the clock

Mine gets around 45-50 mpg on the motorway depending on driving style. It's been as low as 28mpg lol. Town driving is okay ish around 35+ because it's a bit hilly in some areas where I live and also traffic

Good point actually. I got the 60mpg in "auto" driving mode, and getting 50ish in dynamic mode driving 25 miles to work

I've done about 2,000 miles in my TFSI 190 S tronic.

• Average 42.5mpg
• Best 45.5mpg
• Worst 41.2mpg

Calculated from the pump and odometer as opposed the the DIS. Mixed driving some just the driver some five up + luggage.

3.0 Tdi Quattro 218 Avant.
On a round trip to Cornwall from Oxfordshire, including fast motorway and lots on slow fiddly roads in Cornwall, around 650 miles in total, 4 people, luggage and air con going the whole time, averaged 46mpg on the trip computer.

wow - i have been thinking something was wrong, but i was going from an Audi 3 2012 2.0 TDI to A4 B9 109 TFSI 2.0 and assumed it was the petrol difference. I have done about 3500miles now over 3 months. I have struggled to get over 20mpg and seems to make no difference if on economy or Sport mode, the bulk of my journeys are start / stop traffic along the south circular (London) with a 40m round trip. Even on a few long motorways drives never been above 28mpg. My Audi i was getting 35-40mpg so dont think its my driving I also seem to empty a tank in a week doing around 40 miles a day, where with my A3 it was 2x that. The distance to petrol refill miles seems to be totally off, if i drive 10miles would expect (ish) for it to drop 10miles. However sometimes it goes UP, Down or stays the same. My A3 was never this "off". if i go and talk to Audi, any idea what could be causing the problem?

I would talk to them no way should you be getting 20mpg unless the throttle is being used as on/off switch or you're driving around with the handbrake on...

@woodyuk that doesn't sound right. My S4 does 30mpg on the way to work and is on a long term average of 26.9mpg over 12k miles.

@woodyuk Yeah sounds like there is definitely something wrong with yours! My old B8 2.0tfsi used to average 35mph and be easily in the mid 40's on motorway! And the new tfsi in the B9 is meant to be way more economical than that!

The 2.0 TFSI seems to be best suited for motorway runs. I get roughly between 42-47mpg on long motorway runs doing between 70-80mph.

On hilly A-roads I tend to get bewteen roughly 40-43mpg.

I've noticed that it takes quite a few miles into a journey for the car to start getting 40+mpg. It normally gets between 29-35mpg for the first 10-15miles on journeys for me. Doesn't seem to like short journeys at all.

Yours should still return more than 20mpg though. Saying that, when it's in dynamic mode and to press the pedal down gently the instantaneous mpg drops to why before 20mpg so I could imagine it before before 20mpg if you boot it everywhere.

My cars on 3400miles now in 7 weeks from new. Hopefully the engine will produce closer to 50mpg once the engine loosens up.

So it seems even the petrol's are actually pretty economical as well! Obviously Audi states they are but you never know with real world driving!

Lifetime on trip is 52.6 mpg .On Fuelly 49.6 average over 1085 miles
These are mainly long journeys in excess of 70 miles.

Is there any run-in instructions for the engine? I can't say that I've read any so far?

I hope it isn't true. I only do 6000 miles a year so would take a while before I can start really enjoying the new car!

It's advice you don't really have to follow exactly and there is no harm is sometimes driving it like you stole it, the only issue really is letting the engine bog down and excessive rpm for a prolonged period.
Having said that I only do less than 5k a year and I've really never bothered with it much as my cars are replaced at around three years so it isn't really going to matter me much.

Well I may start "unleashing the beast" then,....so far I have mostly been driving like an old person.

I need to pay some attention to the different driving modes..I don't really get whats what yet.
other than efficiency mode is horrible...

I just left my A3 in auto all the time, it automatically gives me dynamic engine mode when it detects I am using more throttle and firms up the steering the faster you go. Never seen the point in switching it...

Yeah I've tried Auto mode recently and find its really good!
