Hello fellow e-tron buyers,

So I have a decision I wish to get some opinions on.

I currently drive an S5, which I adore, but unfortunately I will likely have to give up soon as I am starting a new job in London. My GF was working in London, so had a Mini to use on the weekends (she hates my S5...calls it a boat...), however she is doing the opposite and is getting a job very local (about 10-15miles away), for which she will need to commute by car.

Now, despite owning a rather large petrol car, I have been growing increasingly fond of EVs. As such, the only real option in the Audi fold is the A3 e-tron. To me, trading up the S5 to an A3 e-Tron makes perfect sense as its range is suitable for my GF to do her commute on pure EV, but gives us that option to use the petrol engine for longer commutes (hardly ever do more than 30miles, so not really needed). She loves the A1, and don't know how she feels about the A3, but I'm sure no tax and next to zero fuel costs will convince her!

Now the catch......I live in a victorian terraced where it is impossible to park outside my house (single yellow on my side, and the sum total of 2 spaces on the opposite side of the road which I very rarely get!). Usually I'm parked a few yards away down the surrounding streets. Does the lack of ability to charge the car at night render it pretty pointless? My hope is that my GF can at least charge it at work. In my mind, this at the very least gives her the option to use pure EV one direction.

I guess there is going to be the cost/benefit side to weight up (assume the e-tron is more expensive than its petrol equivalent?), however there is also the 'eco' side to the argument as well, and would spend the little extra if it means I can reduce tail pipe emissions in anyway. Of course there is also the fact that we will likely move again soon, and therefore the option to charge the car at home may present later on. How does charging while using the petrol work? Is it a false economy in that more petrol is consumed to charge?

What do you think is the sensible decision here? To try the e-tron, assuming she can at least charge at work, or just go for a small 1.4 CoD A1/A3?

Sorry for the essay...thanks for anyone that kept reading!

If her job is nearer 10 than 15 miles away she's likely to be able to do a return trip by just charging at work, based on my experience. I hadn't actually planned on buying and e-tron originally - I was just looking for a well specced petrol A3. I had been looking at new COD ones, and then thought I'd take a look at ex-demo ones just to see how much they depreciated. But there weren't many around. There were a few e-trons though...So I actually bought and ex demo e-tron.

I looked at it as a well specced A3 with a free electric motor... It was less than £24k with 6k miles on the clock. To get even close to the spec on COD A3 you (pre facelift) had to add DSG auto, MMI Nav, LED lights as options. Ours has a panoramic roof, leather/Alcantara heated seats, 18" wheels and pearlescent paint too. So good value I think :)

It was originally meant for my partner, but I have to say I have sort of comandeered it ☺️ My commute is 11 miles each way, and I can almost always manage one one charge. Though a charger has been installed at work now, so I do use that - free electricity!! It's averaged a calculated 100 mpg over 4,000 miles. Around half those miles are commuting / short journeys on battery power. On long journey (400 miles) it averages around 50mpg if driven normally. I expect more is possible... Driven hard it'll do under 30 I expect!!

In summary, for a short commute it's great, but also flexible, comfortable, quick enough and refined enough for much longer journeys!

Just a few thoughts - let me know if you have any questions!

If you can't plug your eCar in, outside your house (so overnight charge) they ld think its a pretty pointless purchase imho

Yea its looking like its not going to work unfortunately. Looking at chargers around where she works, they are pretty few and far between...

Will probably opt for either an A1 or A3 with the 1.4 CoD.

The EV can be something for the future!

Ah I see; if you can't actually charge it at your place of work then no, it's not going to make much sense. Though, if there's an outdoor 13a socket at work that it can be plugged in to it will fully charge in around 4 hours using the portable charger the car comes with.

Cheers Peter, that is good to know! At least it adds another option.

I'll see what is around when we get closer to buying. I'm definitely going to have the S5 till September, and even then taking it off me might be a struggle...!

Like you, if there is no straight 1.4 CoD, but a e-Tron with good spec for similar money, its like buying the 1.4 but with a battery! Never know when and how we could use it either now, or in the future.

Keep the S5, buy her a bus pass!
Sorted

Haha its actually me contemplating getting shot of my S5. Justifying silly money on a S5 is difficult when you use it nearly everyday....justifying it when you will only use it on the weekends/evenings is nigh on impossible...!

Okay, so give Mrs Dr the S5, and YOU take the bus pass. That way, Herself is happy, and you get to watch as someone drives off in your... Okay, this may not be the smart idea I thought it was...

Goo'day Mr Whittan. Fancy seeing you around these parts!

Against all intuition, I've actually begged her to take it for a drive, but she refuses :(

As you know, I'll probably end up keeping it...

Right as an update I have been researching this a fair bit and I've narrowed it down to:

A1 1.4TFSI 150PS
A3 1.4TFSI 150PS
A3 E-Tron

A1 is the cheapest, but sitting in the A1 and A3 back to back there really is no contest on which has the superior interior...My GF loves the A1, but considering I will be driving this as well, hopefully she will like it as well...

Looking at the used market the cheapest to buy would be the A1, at around £15k for a decent BE spec. The standard 1.4TFSI 150PS A3 is hard to come by on the used market, and looking at around the £20k figure for a decent spec. In contrast, there is a fair few E-trons about with good spec and range from £20-£25k. I'm now thinking I'm in a similar boat as @PeterS! Why not just get a decent spec E-Tron for similar price and have the advantage of using the EV when I can?

The plot thickens....

Oh and for reference my GFs office is 7miles away, and all other regular journeys are under 20miles. E-Tron could work very well....

If it wasn't for the extraordinarily ridiculous house prices where I live I might of been able to afford a house with a drive and gone full EV....

Well we're still very pleased with our choice; it wasn't particularly chosen for its PHEV status, though it is plugged in every night at home and as a result has average 100mpg over the last 6,000 miles. But it's also very capable, and pretty economical, on much longer trips. A 560mile return trip to Hull last week was done at an average speed of 62mph and an average fuel economy of 46mpg for the trip. Pretty impressive I thought.
