Nice. It's nice to see that Audi are looking after us owners! I'll let you know how my repair goes next month. In fairness Cardiff Audi were top notch!!

Yep it's Audi UK that look after you and not the dealer!! My car was eventually fixed at Cardiff Audi and my experience there was shocking. Read my review!
I wouldn't use them again ever! Not only did they insist I was at fault causing the oil repair (my wife was there too) they also took over a week to give me a courtesy car whilst mine was in having a five grand plus repair! I had to email their head of business and Audi UK to get one and that was a day before getting the car back. During which I started this thread! Since then I've taken my business to Bridgend Audi who are a bit better..

Maybe Cardiff Audi have learned their lesson and I was their Guinea pig?

However this may be my last Audi unfortunately. I so want a Nissan next...:rockwoot:

Cricky!! Yeah that sucks for customer service! They do make you feel as if it's your fault in a way and try and make you feel guilty. I'll be honest I was bit of a sado, when I'll told them about the problem initially I had to wait 4 weeks for the appointment. During that time I drew up a table of when the warning went off, how many miles it had done, what oil went back in and trip reset etc. So I made sure they could see that I've done everything expected of as an owner. I know it's a bit sad but it helped. The advisor that dealt with me was great. She kept me updated and when she phoned to let me know the work was being covered she had already booked it in and secured a courtesy car. So fingers crossed mate it'll go as smooth as it seems.

Thread bandwagon ahoy!
Took my A5 for its first part of the oil consumption test today.
Sadly, I got given a rubbish A3 1.6tdi and not anything spectacular like some of the others were given, but never mind I was mobile for a few hours literally.
3 hours later I get a call saying they have carried out the first stage.
So collected my car and drove home.
The oil level is at exactly the same level previous to dropping off (1 segment down) so no obvious attempts to over fill, and they have not taped the filler cap up.
So, let's see what happens.
I am the second owner for over 2 years, the first owner had full history until I acquired it, and since I got it had it serviced 3 times at my local indy using genuine parts and oil from Tps (all receipts to prove) and service stamped accordingly.
I hope it goes well as it is starting to use a fair bit more than it did.
I will keep you all posted.

A nice mate. With everything you've said I can't see any issue with them covering it 100%. I'm the second owner of mine. It 40k on the clock and a service history I've taken it up to 84k over the last 4 years so it's going well apart from the f#@: load of oil being used. It's been getting worse over the last 12 months and has started chucking out some blue smoke. The pipes are well sooted too!!. When I had stage 1 done it dropped 1 segment that day and I did around 180 miles before I took it back. Fingers crossed for you mate.

Hi, looking for a bit of advice. I have an A5 2.0 tsfi that now needs a new engine with the price all in from Audi of £10,000. The problem first came when i noticed it was taking far too much oil, was away to book it in to the garage when i was driven to work 1 morning and the engine started rattling the whole car, and then it just wouldnt start. Got it put into audi garage, and been told the pistons went through the engine. I quick search after the incident tells me that this is a common issue with these engines. Been going on 4 month now with fimance or audi taking any sort of means to help or take responsibilty for this fault. Do i just bite the bullet and pay for this? Its an 09 with 57,000 on thr clock, should i really have to replace an engine of audi "quality" after 7 year. Only thing that gave me hope that it is my fault is that so many people have got theirs fully paid for, but so far audi have only offered 4 grand of the 10 that it needs to be put back on the road, the car is only worth maybe 11 grand after all. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks ryan

Have you spoken to anybody at Audi UK ? (not your local Audi dealership)

I foned Audi UK as soon as it happend and they told me to put into my nearest dealer (Aberdeen audi) before even looking at the car they asked for £600 to strip engine down to tell me the same thing the AA tech told me when he plugged it in. Audi UK have been apologetic but insist because it did not complete an oil consumption test that it cant be proved.

Then maybe its time to throw some legal stuff at them, this is a design flaw with the engine and your car fits the criteria that states it needs a fix. I was going to use these guys to serve them up if they refused to help me.
http://www.candcsolicitors.co.uk/ac...ct-claims/audi-engine-oil-consumption-claims/
I am not affiliated with them and never needed to use them but @ £10K repair bill you may want to consider reaching out to something like this for help. How dare they fob you off like they are doing, disgusting :puke2:

Thanks have gave them a call and they will get back to me tomorrow. Just puts you off buying cars again with problems like this, on a supposidly "reliable" car and make.

How long had it been losing oil for and has it had an oil consumption test done by Audi?

Hi Ryan,

Almost certainly the cam chain tensioner has failed due to the excessive oil consumption and trashed the Pistons/Valves.

Persist with your case at Audi UK and you should see a more positive outcome. Don't get fobbed off..

TFSI owners reading this that haven't yet done anything about the excessive oil consumption need to book their cars in ASAP. These tensioner failures will become far more common especially with time. The consumption rebuild normally incorporates updated cam chain tensioner and adjuster parts to alleviate this problem!

Hope Audi UK and the dealer do their best to help!!

Audi told me mine was dropping due to an oil leak around the sump of which they wanted 400 quid to fix and would not proceed with an oil test until this is done. They also tried to charge me 2 grand for disks and pads that do NOT need doing!!

The car couldnt drive to do the consumption test, at first i thought it was maybe the sensor in the oil tank was broken, and took that to get checked at a normal garage, nothing wrong with sensor and garage filled it back up and that was january, and the engine went in febuary. So their really wasnt much warning. I dont want to give into them because if they do it to me they will do it to the next person. I just cant believe they havnt recalled this engine.

Not good mate. As Mike suggested speak with Audi UK as they make the decisions on the oil related repairs. If the engine has failed like you've described then your problem was well advanced. They must know that the oil issue is the cause because they've offered 4k off. I would ask them to investigate why the engine has had such a catastrophic fail.

Can someone explain to me why excessive oil consumption would affect the cam chain tensioner? That bit I don't get.

Just as a reference, with mine being the 1.8TFSI, Audi UK actually fobbed me off saying that engine was "included" in the whole oil consumption subject, but luckily the dealer has seemed to acknowledge it as they didn't charge me for the oil test and are keen to get mine back in. My car is just going through stage one of the oil consumption test and is already half way down the oil indicator after 240 miles.

Mine is a 1.8TFSI and it's going in on Monday to have pistons and rods etc. To be fair I didn't have any issues with the dealer but i could tell by a few things that were requested that Audi UK were putting up a little resistance. So far I haven't paid anything and they even gave me 5 ltr's of oil to last me until it goes in for repair.

It's bad when you hear of people like Ryan that obviously has the issue and the worse case scenario has happened and they don't want to accept responsibility for it. They should at least investigate it to establish the cause.

That's a relief @T.Lloyd, hopefully bodes well for me.

My only slight worry is I don't have great service history. Last service before I bought the car was at 36k and as soon as I bought the car I put a full service on it @ 53k. We'll see what they say when they ask for history.

Again if anyone can explain what the relationship between oil consumption and the cam tensioner is I'd be grateful just so I know what I'm talking about when going back in.

A little update, spoke to the lawyer that deals with this incidents alot, he said to try audi UK again for more "good will" as they only tend to take on the cases after the work has done and try recoup the costs. Spoke to a nice women from audi customer services, on looking at my case notes she asked if i knew the reason why i am only getting a partial payout rather than it all paid, i said that Audi have said that it was wear and tear, she then said that it was because i dont have full service history. This was the first time i had been told this, and as the vehicle has been serviced every year i was quite suprised this was the overall reason. I told her this and she seemed suprised. The only thing she said was because it was another garage that had put oil in that i would have to find out what oil was used and if it meets audi standards. Something needs to happen fast, as Aberdeen Audi have informed me they will now be charging £20 a day for it being at their centre.

Audi are using the full service history trick in a way of making owners pay towards a rebuild/new engine. They even tried it on with me and my car has full Audi main dealer history!
Try your best to prove the oil met Audis specification at the previous servicings. However that may be difficult to source without invoices and Audi know this!!
As for the £20 day charge that is shocking!!!

Yep me too and because mine has been serviced by an independent garage, not an Audi garage, they wanted invoices to prove the correct grade of oil had been used. Of course my garage complied with this and even included the invoice for when I took it in for a suspect oil leak!! It shouldn't really matter how or who serviced the vehicle, they've put a fault in there since it was built they need to sort it.

Another weird question I was asked by Audi UK seperate to the vehicles history was how many Audis I'd owned previous to this and for how long! They knew I had already registered an Audi cabriolet and TT previously!!
Basically I told them this would be my last one - Funny enough the call came on my birthday of all days (they knew that too from my details) saying they would pay the full £5500 rebuild cost..
Since that I've recieved 2 refunds, 1 free major service and another free minor service in next the few months will also be complimentary.
Hassle them and argue from the start...

Ive got a B8 1.8 Sline, I've got full Audi service history with mine. I contacted Audi at the start of May, They booked me in for the oil test a week later at my local dealer Tamworth, i had a major service done at the same time so they gave me a brand new A3 Saloon SLine for the day which i was pleased with. 2 weeks later my oil light come on, i actually only covered 470 out of the 600 miles lol. Its now booked in for the 24th June for the full rebuild and there covering all my costs and again there giving me a courtesy car for the 10days or so, my case manager at Audi UK its even ringing me back Monday with the selection of courtesy cars they'll have so i can actually choose for myself, which is great! Im actually going to try and haggle to see if they'll replace my exhaust tips, if not ill do it myself anyway.

From the first phone call, for me personally Audi have been a absolute joy to deal with, from Audi UK and my case manager to the dealership and the service team and customer service everything has been perfect, with them sorting out courtesy cars, staying late for me, communication etc everythings been spot on.

I'll check in again when the works been carried out.

Sounds good. Hopefully I'll have a nice little number to drive whilst I have the work done. To be honest though I'm not really bothered what they give me, I'm just grateful it's all being sorted and I'm looking forward to enjoying my A4 again.

My light came on today 323 miles after the initial first stage.
Phoned the dealer, can't get me in until Tuesday with no chance of a courtesy car because of short notice.
A slightly bit miffed called audi UK who were great by the way have escalated a case in which I will here the outcome Monday
The saga continues.
I feel the dealership is trying to flank it
Thanks to this thread I am all clued up...
The saga unfolds

When I went back after stage one, I waited whilst they checked the oil and after about 45-50 minutes ( and two mocha's) later I had the results and drove away. It's at this point they make a claim to Audi UK, they'll take your service book and any other requirements they need. It took about 3 weeks from it failing the oil test to a decision being made. I'll keep everything crossed for you buddy.

The thing I don't understand is - if cars with a full Audi service history fail and have used the correct oil, why are they worried about cars not using the correct oil?

Audi claim that using the wrong grade of oil could contribute to the deterioration of the seals around the pistons?? So if you use any other oil other than what has been specified in the owners maintenance manual then they are less likely to give 100% repair. This little gem basically translates to "clutching at straws" and looking for any reason not to reward a fully covered repair.

Sent from my E2303 using Tapatalk

this is obviously aimed at owners that have used independent garages for servicing etc.

Its getting a little bit more frustrating now, audi uk have said it was aberdeen manager that had final say, and now aberdeen sayin it was audi uk that made final decision. Now found out that its not even the manager thats dealing with it. Went through on saturday to try get some answers and catch them off guard but no one knew anything about the case and they thought i was coming to get car towed away (because of the 20 pound a day charge i said i would have to earlier in the week.) They really are just clutching at straws, asked them if it wasn't the oil consumption that caused the timing chain to fail what was it then? All he had to say it that in some cases they can jump themselves . Its all just gettin a bit tiring. They hadn't even charged my battery up for me "picking" the car up (as the picture shows the electics are dead so windows wont go up)

@RyanDunc It used to be up to the dealer to decide the contribution amount but as this problem has been acknowledged by Audi UK as a manufacturing defect, then it is now up to Audi UK to sort it out!

I would have thought that you would have had better service from Audi Aberdeen considering that they are the biggest Audi dealer in the UK!!! Shame on them!

Definitely Audi UK that are the decision makers as I think most Audi dealerships are franchises (I might be wrong), Cardiff Audi is certainly a franchise. It's a really difficult situation and it leaves a real bitter taste in your mouth that such a major and prestigious car manufacturer is effectively wiping they're hands of your problem. The age of your car and the low mileage that it has I think it's very unlikely that the chain just "jumped". They have already offered you some financial relief which suggests they know what caused it. Anymore news from that solicitor firm?

Currently sat in wearside Audi awaiting the outcome from the first stage of the oil consumption test.
A nice wait of upto 3 hours apparently!

It shouldn't be that long mate. I knew in about 50 mind. They drain out what oil is left and then measure it. They are able to calculate if it's out of tolerance. Dropped mine off for pistons and rods yesterday they said they would clean the exhaust tips on too.

Here is hoping mate, apparently other cars are in first so have to wait my turn.
They did offer me a lift home but that is unrealistic with work later today

Just sit there and stare at them, that should do it.
