2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Mines ready for collection today, piston works have been carried out, will report back on what I'm told during handover....

I'm betting the cam chain tensioners haven't been touched and they try to skirt around the subject with wishy washy answers, I hope to be wrong about this bit.
 
They did mine as part of the repair. No extra charge

Collected the car today, service advisor said they haven't replaced the cam chain tensioners but they will have been checked and made good if deemed to be a problem. All works by them are warranted for 2 years but its not the entire engine, only what they have done, if the chain jumps a notch and wrecks the engine he said that would be there fault as they have done the works so get it back in to them if that occurs.

On the QT he said they have done this job hundreds if not thousands of times now and the mech's who do it are very familiar with doing it so you shouldn't have any problems at all.

During the entire process I haven't had to pay for anything, I've had numerous courtesy cars, bags of oil, a free diagnostic on another matter and then the engine rebuild.............all FREE :cheerful: How can I complain about that ?

I didn't get any wine, champagne, sweets, servicing or service plans........Do I need to be upset I didn't get any of these ?

Very surprised the cam chain components weren't changed! Very easy and cheap to do when incorporated as part of the original rebuild. It's always gonna be one of those niggles that will be in your mind and other owners!! Why would they fit these modified parts to some and not others? I have confirmation mine were changed as well as the new part numbers.
Rather these changed than any sweets, wine, champagne etc..
Although, I did get 2 lots of reimbursements and 2 free servicings! The first 'major' service including brake fluid change was completed last July and next minor service soon will be complimentary.
Just hope there isn't a rise in the number of cars requiring new engines over the next few years because of Audi dealers failure to change for these modified parts..

I have just bought an A5 2009 2.0TFSI from an independent dealer and noticed this issue on the drive from the dealer in cardiff to edinburgh where i live.
The oil was low and the warning light came on so i put a litre of oil in it. Totally baffled at how this has happened until i read this forum.

It has full service history and mot certificates, from what i'm reading, people are managing to have their costs covered by audi.

I'm just hoping I meet the requirements and they will repair this problem for me.
I will be using Edinburgh audi.
 
just got my car in for the interim service (not free....it'll be a while before i let that go!), so that means i've gone from engine fix to service w/ no oil top-ups at all, about 6k miles. bit of a difference from previous years!
anyone want to make me an offer on 2x1ltr (very dusty) bottles of oil?! :-D

Ive got mine booked in for a service and the oil consumption test next week at Tamworth Audi. If my car had some 19" RS6 Reps on would they class this as a modification? Just so they can get out of paying the bill etc, I've got full audi history don't worry

As long as they don't find any sort of remap etc.. within the engine bay you will be fine. So remove them first :whistle2: This is an engine design failure however Audi will and have used any excuse to make the owner pay for their huge cockup! You will be fine mate especially with FASH. Just don't take any rubbish from the dealer...
 
Mines 550 miles into the test now and due back to Audi in a week and the mmi hasn't moved but normally it would have dropped by now. How accurate is the mmi and will they still drop the oil to see how much exact ally it's used on return to Audi.
 
Help people!!

As mentioned previously my car failed the test and I have been waiting 2 weeks for Audi Blackburn to call back me back and heard nothing so I called them today. They have confirmed that it has been approved and that Audi UK will be covering the cost but they won't be changing the cam chain tensioner or adjuster only the piston rings etc. I even tried to get the tail pipes replaced but nothing.

So i rang the parts department to get prices and the guy didn't have a clue, said it has 2 tensioners and no adjuster????

Does anyone know the part numbers for the new modified cam chain tensioner, adjuster and tail pipes? Its an A3 1.8tfsi.

Yup. Don't think I had the tensioners changed just Pistons only. TBH mine still churns though oil at a litre every 2k so as far as i am concerned I don't think it's fixed like the 2.0 boys on here. Car drives fine though. Just replaced my tailpipes with some cheapo Chinese ones off fleabag. Now just as black as the originals after a fortnight.

I have no comeback on Audi as it will pass the oil test and the 2 yr warranty on the fix will expire before it gets to 0.5 litre every 621 miles. Anotherwords no leg to stand on. Getting rid after my next service which is free as I had Audi finance. Absolutely sick of worrying about it. No idea what to get though. Might just get a high mile golf GTD to bomb around in or a focus !

Waiting for the flaming !
 
Am I correct in thinking that the spotty 18 year old apprentice gets to carry out this type of work?

At a repair cost of £5500 each time I don't think so..
 
Following on from my thread here, it looks like I have the same consumption problem as everyone else on my 1.8TFSI. It's done 53k (I bought it just over a month ago) and it's going through 1 litre every 500 miles or so.

So gutted after buying this car and putting spending about £500 on it straight away (as I intend to keep it for a few years) and now this has happened. Now I'm going to (probably) have along battle with the independent dealer I bought it from and Audi Hull. Joy! :sadlike:

Phone Audi UK customer helpline on 0800 699 888 first, tell them you think your car is using excessive amounts of oil and see what they say.
The people who answer the phone are used to hearing that phrase a lot so give it a go, even though its not a 2.0 TFSI its worth trying.
This is the first step in getting Audi to open a 'case' for your cars problem and they will advise on what to do from there.

Always get a case assigned with Audi UK before doing anything! They approve the repair and not the dealer!!

  1. All the TFSI engines are affected!
  2. Contact Audi UK first
  3. Take car to dealer with knowledge from this thread
  4. Don't get fobbed off with having to 'pay' a contribution
  5. Get car back and really enjoy what is now a great car..

Try and get new exhaust tips out of them as well.

I had to pay for mine and fit them myself but its a nice finishing touch to see shiny exhaust tips instead of coal burning power station chimneys :wink:

I must have been living under a rock or something but this is the 1st I have heard of this.

I have an A5 (211) with one of the affected engines (CDN).

I bought it from new in September 2010 (Epsom) and up till now it has not been using much oil. I have only done 11300 miles though so its probably not even run in yet.

I have three Audi service stamps and 2 other garage stamps in the service book.

The fuel pump went just two months before the warranty was out so got that fixed free.

My question is, will they repair an engine that is not showing any signs of the problem? I'm guessing that this will affect any resale value to anybody who knows of this issue.

What are the chances of getting it done? I know its low mileage at the moment so i guess it could happen anytime.

Unless the car is showing signs of the oil problem there is nothing you can do unfortunately even though it will fail at some point..

Update from Audi UK, whom I've just been on the phone with.

I spoke to a chap called Mark and he said that they don't recognise the 1.8TFSI as an effected engine, only the 2.0TFSI, so I would have to foot the bill for any work done. I challenged this and he said whatever I've read is wrong. I have booked it in for a diagnosis with the local dealer anyway, which I don't mind paying for, but I'm going to need some evidence or advice on how to fight this if they aren't recognising the 1.8s as effected. :(
 
Mines an 09 1.8tfsi a4 and its back in after doing 620 mile today and they have said if it has used more than half a litre it will be done completely free of charge. They've even gave me a rather nice 65 plate a5 as a courtesy car. Just waiting on the phone call to tell me weather it's getting done or not.

That's encouraging. Was it the dealer who said it would be getting done for free or Audi UK?
 
The dealer at Audi Newcastle his words were it would be done as a good will gesture.

He is having your leg up. I can send you a copy of my FOC receipt for the rebuild if you want.
 
You have been given wrong information. The 1.8tfsi is definitely affected. Mine is a 1.8tfsi, I spoke to Audi uk initially and they told me it was affected. Took it to the dealer, carried out the test which it failed. It's booked in for the work to be done next week completely free of charge. I'm just arguing with them over the cam chained tensioner and adjuster. I even tried to get the tailpipes done but no joy. Spoke to the parts guy who quoted £62 + vat but he could do them for £32inc vat (work that one out)
 
Little update on mine they said its failed consumption test and there going to do it as a good will gesture but it will take till Friday to get parts in then have it done by end of next week. So I said ok I'll come get the car then bring it back once parts are in which the guy said just leave it with us and keep the courtesy car till we get it done. So all happy days and no arguing or anything.

A lot better service than what I've had. I've had to wait over a month before they could fit me in and that's only with me ringing and chasing them! They always said someone will you me back and never did. So frustrating!

Mine took 3 weeks after dropping it off. Tbh they could have took 6 months over it as I was banging the miles on their A4 avant they gave me. I even went on holiday with it which was a boost for all the luggage a wife and two kids want to drag around Europe !

Bonus! When I had mine in, I was given a delivery mileage A6 Avant S line and I put 5,000 miles on it!

I own a 09 plate A4 1.8 Tfsi. I've had it for around 5 years an in the last 2years I've had issues with the oil consumption. I had it checked for leaks etc but all was clear. It got to a point that I was putting a ltr of oil, twice sometimes 3 times a month doing a grand total of 180-190 miles before the "oil low"warning going off.
After reading this forum I went to my local Audi dealer who did the oil consumption test for free plus gave me 5ltr's of oil whist I waited for results and after 180 miles the warning went off. I took straight back to Audi and obviously it failed. I then had to provide my service history for a claim to be sent off for the repair work ( pistons and con rods etc) and two weeks ago they came back saying I had contribute 20% to the repair because my car hadn't been serviced in the Audi circuit. However, I was asked by Audi to provide invoices from the garage that has been doing services to show what oil grade they had been using and once I did this, which sho wed the correct oil grade, they have now agreed to fix it 100% with a courtesy car whilst the work is done. from reading some other forums it appears Audi are doing more to resolve this issue.
