What is it about 2.0 diesel owners and the outside lane?

But on my drive from west midlands to Edinburgh (6 hours) and back over the weekend, I couldn't help notice the amount of 320d's, 2.0 TDi, mondeo's, merc's that just love to sit in the outside lane and overtake every ****** in the world lol
Where I'm from we can't even count high enough for me to tell you how many it was

Actually I can live with 70mph convoys - at least they are moving. The ones which drive me up the wall are HGVs on dual carriageways 'overtaking' each other at a closing speed of half a mile an hour.

As the professional driver of a vehicle unable to use the outside lane, I can never get my head around car "drivers" who refuse to use the inside lane - even when it's clear - and sit at 45 mph. . . don't they know it's illegal now ? (points and a fine).

And if you are late for wherever you are going due to truckers doing what they have to do to keep this country supplied with provisions . . . LEAVE EARLIER !

Someone tell me, why do they love it so much?!

For the same reason that all sorts of cars stick in the outside or centre lane... they have never been taught to drive. New drivers are not even allowed on the motorway until they have passed their test.
Germany in particular requires that a learner driver, with a QUALIFIED instructor (not Mum or Dad) has to do the following BEFORE they are allowed to even take the driving test...

at least 225 minutes and 50 kilometers per session on highways or country roads

at least 135 minutes on the Autobahn with each journey lasting at least 45 minutes

at least 90 minutes for driving in twilight or darkness, half of this on highways or country roads.

Perhaps this is why the standard of driving and lane discipline is so much better on the autobahn. I have recently driven nearly 1000 miles to and from and driving around in Germany and driving on the autobahn was a real pleasure.

Nope, very much tongue in cheek - obviously I didn't add enough emoticons to the post Sadly, the people who do drive like that won't be the people reading forums such as this. Maybe we need 'revalidation tests' every few years like we have in aviation - it does seem strange that you can pass a test at 17 and just keep on driving until you drop.

.......well as father of a teenage daughter who's sitting her test in about a month after 30+ lessons I can assure you they do indeed and it's a ****** sight harder than it was when I took mine!!

The problem is the same as it's always been, no practice on motorways for learner drivers..............

It is ridiculous that the motorway is not part of the learning process or test! However, I wonder how many people actually get stopped and ticketed for driving in the middle lane when the inside is clear? Does my head in! You can be sitting in the outside lane in a queue of traffic to get by one car who is simply plodding along in the middle lane! Moving road blocks that make traffic jams! As usual, not enough police to 'police' the traffic laws.

In response to the original post, it's mainly "because we can" and because of the various elements highlighted in the above posts.

I think that vehicles over a certain weight should be mandated to the inside lane only.
Additionally, that said vehicles should be restricted to motorways between the hours of 2300 - 0600 hours.
Outside of that, they have to pay a fee - that errs on the side of too expensive.

You really couldn't "swamp" motorways with learner drivers - far too impractical and dangerous in my view.

Finally, no-one should be allowed to drive until they are 25 - and at the other end, once you touch 65, you get your Bus Pass in one hand while handing your Driving Licence back with the other.

Simples.

General rule is if you're going faster than the guy in front, and need to overtake - then go into the next right lane. If there is no-one to overtake, then get back into the far left lane and stay there until you need move again.

Not really noticed 2.0 TDIs being guilty of staying in the right lane. Maybe they're driving faster than everyone else because they get better fuel economy so don't care so much about MPG?

I overtook one yout' in a Golf GTi on the 'inside' on the way to the hospital today (BLUEY, Audi RS3, de-badged, de-cat, Cornflower blue, etc.) and one in a 'Cooper' Mini on the way back, ok on the 'outside' that time, well two actually; and that with a armful of blood left in Wolverhampton: move yer butt out of the way or get on with wherever yer goin', tsk...

71 years of age now in my RS3 (3380 H) and I ain't got the time left you young bu**ers have, so go on your way or get out of mine....

First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow down for me AT ALL as I came off the exit slip! I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway!

The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn.

Unbelievably, I had to do the same again before I could get to the BMW lane.

Anyway, once I was in the BMW lane and posing along at 110 mph enjoying the adulation that the inferior car drivers were giving me, I noticed an inferior car ahead of me which was not only in the BMW lane of my motorway, but was driving at a ridiculous 70 mph!

Naturally, I got within a foot or so of his rear bumper and flashed my headlights to remind him he shouldn't be in the BMW lane of my motorway and to get out of my way.

Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that, but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me!

He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car.

Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast!

Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my drivers licence to a police station to be sent away to have some points put on! (They're not free points either - they're £20 each and I was only allowed 3.) But the man at the police station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me!

See, now THAT'S the sort of respect you get when you own and drive a BMW!

As a first time Audi owner my excuse is that if you drop back into the inside lane it's sometimes hard to get back out ! I've lost count of the amount of times I've had my indicator on and other drivers just won't let me out! They seem to take great pleasure in looking at me as they sail past and I even got the V sign from one woman !!! Sorry - I'm a girl but I have to admit a good 70% of the attitude and dangerous driving (mobile use and unrestrained kids bouncing around) and lack of courtesy is from other women ....Also when you do get back out the vehicle behind you suddenly accelerates to sit so close they're almost on the back seat !!! Oh and the ones that overtake then drop in front and decrease their speed ...to about 60 ..to force you to overtake ...then they overtake you ........again ......I've said it before and I'll say it again - the attitude of other drivers is totally different to when I drove my old fiat punto ....I know we get called Audi W*****s ....maybe because we have to be lol!! I've had to learn to adapt my driving and be 100% more vigilant, anticipating other drivers' actions and sadly expecting to be stitched up !!! But I continue to display best driving practice, indicating, thanking people , not acting like a girl racer, oh and the drivers that scowl and gurn as they go past ....I give them a huge smile haha!!! Why do we stick to the outside lane ?? It's safer lol!!!
