So it was mine and the wife's anniversary today and she managed to organise an absolute treat. We turned up at our Audi dealer this morning at 10:00 (apperantly to sign some paperwork) and as a complete suprise to me they give me the keys to this weapon and said "bring it back at 3".

I am absolutely exhausted due to 5 solid hours of adrenaline pumping round my system, we drove it with absolute respect and looked after it however once or twice we did give it a little bit of stick:)

The power delivery and noise from the 540bhp V10 is out of this world albeit the RS3 has a lot more low down grunt around town however once the v10 gets past 6K it really comes alive and revs like a motorbike engine all the way up to around 9000rpm. The gearbox must be telepathic or have 7 clutches, pulling a paddle is like pulling the trigger on a rifle, it's a world away from the normal s-tronic boxes.

Initially the brakes didn't seem too sharp but I think they are a lot less assisted than a typical road car and once I got used to pushing a bit harder they had some serious stopping power and a lot of feel through the pedal.

In terms of handling it's the only car I have ever felt real lateral g-force, the car almost feels rear driven but also feels very forgiving with no drama under acceleration thanks to the quattro system. The turn in is instant, no slack in the steering wheel at all.

Although it is a serious piece of kit, it's an absolute pussy cat round town and is no more challenging than driving a TT although we did attract a lot of attention!

Drive select was had everything set to dynamic with the exception of the suspension being set to auto (dynamic doesn't work on our roads).

Unfortunately despite my protest Audi don't take houses as part exchange, so it looks like a bank job is on the cards:) So to summerize I've had an epic day and my Mrs is defiantly a keeper!

It was a really good day and I must say that getting back into the RS3, I wasn't disappointing unlike when we test drove the RS3 and got back into our S3!
As good as the R8 is the RS3 still holds its own!

Happy Anniversary!! I have to agree, your wife sounds like a keeper.. Definitely going to suggest this to my girlfriend ;-)

That car is phenomenal! From the way you are handling the wheel in the video, I can believe how you described the handling.

I were lucky enough to be given an RS3 for the day a couple of weeks back, although myself being 18. My car is in for a major service at the end of May, before that I will be placing a securing deposit to ensure if an RS3 FL does arise, I have an order slot for March 2017. You've got me thinking I should ask for the car again for my service a few days after, hmm. They would have a job to say no having just handed over 'x' amount of money as a deposit :whistle2:

Thanks for all the kind words regarding our anniversary:)

As I'm a bit of a nerd I have just been doing a comparison of accelerations timed from my video editing software (both on the same road with a passenger);

RS3 with launch control
0-62mph 4.0 seconds
0-95mph 8.2 seconds

R8 V10 without launch control
0-62mph 4.1 seconds
0-95mph 7.1 seconds

For everyday driving, which do you reckon is more fun?

I AGREE 100%, the Audi RS3 is an amazing piece of machinery

Having done the same as you (thanks to Sandra and Co) and driven R8 V10 plus, S8, RS7 and RS6 several times I find getting back into the RS3 has NEVER been a disappointment, love it...

Good to have the opportunity to evaluate

The R8 is more of an adrenaline rush and an assault on the senses but it is a £130000 supercar so that's to be expected.

However the RS3 has a lot more exploitable performance on the road especially for novices like me, the R8 has nothing below 4000rpm so on a public road it's hard work keeping it on the powerband.

On smooth A-roads the R8 wins by a million miles but if I owned both and wanted to have a bit of fun on typical English B-roads through the country I think I would take the RS3. Let's be honest, if you can afford an R8 an RS3 as a second car is a very good affordable option.

I'm not trying to understate how good the R8 is at all, no vehicle has ever given me such a rush including any of my motorbikes. I just expected the RS3 to feel dull and slow on the drive home but it didn't at all!

I want to meet the engineer who developed the R8 V10 engine and decided that they needed a plus model with more power! Would love a go in an RS6 too:)

I remember watching Top Gear as a kid when Tiff reviewed the brand new (at the time) RS4 B5, from that moment I always wanted an RS!

Now many here on ASN will know of my passion for the RS3 and some of my disappointment on both road and track with the R8:

However, the most incredible engine for me in the Audi armoury is the twin turbo V8 lump currently housed in the RS6/7 and S8 - what an engine, I could sleep with one readily.

The on-road engine characteristics are as the RS3/TTRs but more so.

Last time out 'experiencing' an RS7 I found it impossible while travelling at 60mph and 'mashing' the pedal to the carpet to say 60, 70, 80, 90 before the car was displaying 90mph plus; an incredible engine/motor is the RS7 - but an RS7 will NOT fit my garage :sadlike: worn a tape measure out trying...

PLEASE AUDI put this twin turbo V8 lump into the R8 (it'll still not fit my garage mind...)

I haven't driven the V10 but was loaned an R8 V8 for the best part of a day in 2009 and was rather underwhelmed. Perhaps my dealer needs to loan me a V10 for a week ;-) .. If I had that sort of money I would probably but a Porsche with a GT suffix though..

If you want a quick, compact, all-weather road machinery piece of 'proper' machinery then stay Retro RS3, RGBARGEE; maybe have a wrap-around R8 image to boot; you'd sure miss the RS3 in everyday driving.

Or maybe a facelift RS3, if ever....

RETRO RS3 had to be coined RGBARGEE if only the counter the 'facelift' term and if ever the 'facelift' does appear and I'm sure it will I/us 8P owners need a suitable label and 'RETRO RS3' could just about do it of only just for the FUN! of it
