Hi all, this is a bit of a build thread ish about the 170 sport i bought last august, didnt collect it untill December and got it sorted mid January

Over the years i played with a few cars, mk5 golf, passat B6, and an A3 8L called Ron, that proved the doubters wrong and made the most power seen from a stock Ko4 at Rtech

so, around April last year a friend of mind called me as a customer of his had a 170 2008 that had a misfire and wanted me to confirm/price the job (to much for him to cope with)

I priced it (worse case second hand engine) and then in August was asked if i wanted to buy it as the owner couldnt afford it, i got the car cheap, spec is 2008 08 plate, 170 Sport 130K full history 3 owners

So on Christmas eve i stripped it down to find the issue and found cylinder 4 glow plug had 10 mm missing, yep, it played tennis between the head and piston :(

New head ordered

I also found the flaps in the inlet manifold were broken up, so i got a second hand alloy 140 mani

Ive got some pics of the piston and the head somewhere will post them later

So it was all back together and running well (or so i thought) i drove it to Liverpool, perfect, driving back it went into limp mode :( and again, and again, i had VCDS with me and it was over boost, the only thing i didnt have a clue about was the turbo as i couldnt drive it before stripping it down, and it had drank 1/2lt of oil, i had a read through the Self study that VW produced and saw the PCV works on vac, so as the turbo was seized the PCV was open all the time, thus drinking oil i took the old one off and it was seized solid, the vains were all bent and twisted (another part the glow plug played tennis with) so a brand new turbo was ordered

while the DP was off i cut the DPF out and blanked the EGR (bklend map time :) )

so once again it was back running, and christ what a difference, now the mods can start :)

i didnt have map lights

and the cluster was flickering on the fuel and temp gauge so i got a white cluster and fitted that

then an RNSE (mk1)

then i just had to do the Q3 heater panel swap :)

im in the middle of doing auto lights and wipers, screen has been replaced (dont ask but it meant i didnt have to commit insurance fraud :) ) cruise, MFSW and armrest

planning on an Sline front bumper swap and boot spoiler, currently im just enjoying driving it

Coming along nicely mate! How hard was getting the Q3 heater panel in there? What other plans have you got?

Thank you mate, the Q3 panel was a breeze, took about 5 mins, although Shane who works for me lost the skin on his thumb as he had a melt down with the grinder and a flappy disc lol

2mm off each side and its a nice snug fit :)

im gonna finish auto lights n wipers, fit cruise, armrest, RS3 front brakes, Sline bumpers, skirts and spoiler, apart from that im happy with it :)

RS3 brakes are too big for nearly all 18" wheels and proper overkill for the power we can get out of our 170 engines even when fiddled with.

Perhaps have a look at S3 brakes which are more readily available too? Unless money is no object in which case the RS3 brakes look monster!

Also what's going on suspension wise, the car sits pretty high?

ive got the option of some R32/S3 brakes, the discs are mega heavy, suspension wise im not sure, on my mk5 golf TDI i fitted some Jamex, which were very very good, but after 2.5 yrs one shock was knackered so i bought another set, this time pro sports, the ride was horrible, atm i really havent a clue what to fit, maybe a 30mm drop, nothing major though

I can recommend Eibach springs. I've had both Sportline and currently Pro-Kit. Both are comfortable!

Can't be mate, SE minus 30mm is where my car sits now. The S-line is about 20mm lower than SE so SE minus 30mm deffo isn't sport level. It's lower than S-line...

SE standard

Audi1 zpsnnqh94g7

-30mm eibachs

Audi2 zpsupkw3xqq

Sits the same as a mates 140 sport standard

Hey Phil looks great ! Can i ask where you found your map light cluster and was it a straight swap p and p ?. I'd like that in mine as i just have standard light without map readers.

I'll ask him to measure centre of wheel to arch

Got mine off ebay, cost me £25 iirc, and it was plug and play :)

@Sayam I think the interior lights are almost as rare as a good mk2 rns-e unit

Nah bro the mk2 RNS-E is as common as mud, usually going for around £350-£400 on eBay?

Edit: OK I see what you mean now...there isn't one on there for a decent price haha. Admittedly, the last time I looked at RNS-E mk2 prices was mid-late last year. That always happens - when you need something it isn't available and when you don't its plentiful and cheap.

There use to be an eastern european guy on eBay somewhere near manchester who did supply and fit for around £400...

And yes that light unit is rare!

I priced up Cruise today from Plymouth TPS and was surprised it was £100 for it all, so that will be done in the next few days

I like the sound of that Phil, i've had my eye on a set from a vw dealer and was £135 all in,. Never thought of TPS, i shall call my local branch and get a set priced and hopefully ordered. Did that price include a new lower shrowd to take the cruise stalk ?

What's rare about them? all the Slines and S3s have them.

Nope, can't speak for the S3 as I don't have one but the standard light fitting in the A3 sline/black edition doesn't have map lights. It just has one large cluster that comes on when doors open or when it is turned on.

The light unit with map lights must have been an option or part of some lighting pack or something :)

Also they are rare because to find one used on eBay to retrofit is nigh on impossible, especially in soul black...people don't remove them because theres nothing to upgrade to if you see what I mean, that light fitting it top of the tree in terms of spec.

I have it in mine but also with all door lights red and white and a double one in the rear for passengers also front footwell lights

Must be part of the interior light pack then, as I have this in both my A3's. I've never used the map lights individually myself----and no you can't have mine, as they appear to be rare, might have an auction though :sm4:

Must be the light pack. I don't have puddle illumination etc so probably why I don't have map lights.

Hey Bernie, I'll swap you with mine and some money

Ha Ha, Think I'll auction them off at Christies if people are that desperate.
Have you asked Mike at 'Parts Request' for a price, might not be that expensive new.

''glow plug had 10 mm missing''
Any problem acopolated to that?

Yes the lower shrowd was inc, iirc the stalk was £60 and the shrowd was £40, and they had it on the shelf :)

well, id never seen it before, BUT i went to look at a VRS 170 for a mate, that had had a new engine fitted due to this same problem, seems its not rare either

Im gonna be honest here and say that i havent seen an S3 in my workshop with them but almost every SE does, like Cruise, my missus has a 1.9 SE she had it as standard, but from the 6 170s on our database they havent

Maybe it was away of making the smaller engined cars more desireable
