Hi All,

Had two new tyres fitted today and while the car was up on the ramps I had a look at my CV joints etc and noticed that one has split.

I want to change the boot myself, does anyone have a guide I could take a look at? I have searched on the forum but can't find anything which is that comprehensive. I understand I've got to take the hub off, but do I need to actually remove the drive shaft? The mechanic at Kwik fit where I had the tyres fitted said I could get a tool which slides the boot over, but if anyone has any links or advice I would appreciate it!

The car is a 2008 A3 2.0TDI with DSG.

Thanks very much.

Thanks very much for that! I'm going to try and buy one from a motor factors tomorrow to get it changed in the evening. Can it be done without removing the drive shaft?

Yeh mate exactly how I did it, just remove the hub from the outer axle you may need someone to hold it out of the way for you though...

i would use a genuine boot kit if i was you or you will probably be doing the same job again a year later, the aftermarket ones just done last

Thanks for that. If I used genuine Audi parts would I have to remove the drive shaft? I have a lot of miles to do in the next couple of weeks so want to get it sorted as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if it's the same set up as any other Audis? I can't find a video or step by step guide of how to do it on an A3 but have found some for the A4, A6 and TT. A step by step guide or video would be really useful so that I can make sure I have all the tools etc. Beforehand.

Thanks for the help! I really don't want to have to pay a garage to do this when I could do it myself for a fraction of the cost.

take wheel off, undo 24mm 12point Driveshaft bolt, undo 3x 16mm bottom ball joint nuts, slide CV joint out of Hub, cut old boot off, hold CV joint and hit the outer edge with a copper hammer, joint comes off, clean off old grease, slide new (genuine boot) on to shaft, refit in reverse order

Great, thanks very much for that! That method would allow me to change it without taking the driveshaft off completely, is that right?

Does the cv joint just come off of the driveshaft with a bit of persuasion? You don't have to undo any bolts or anything?

Thanks again!

Yes you leave the shaft bolted at the gearbox end, the CV Joint is held on the shaft with a C spring clip, you will need to use a hammer not on the joints race, but on the outer edge of the joint, worse case you will need someone to hold the shaft so you can hold the outer spline and hit the joint

Thank you, I'm picking up a kit from Audi at lunch time and will have a go at changing this afternoon. Does anyone know the hub nut torque for when I reassemble?

Thanks for all the help and replies! I ended up getting a stretchy boot rather than the genuine Audi one after speaking to a few people who have used them and had success. It's all done now, wasn't too difficult but did need an extra pair of hands when sliding the boot off of the fitting cone.

One thing though, one of the metal clips broke and I ended up using a cable tie. Do you think it's okay to leave there or change it for a metal clip asap?

Looked under my car last week and noticed a cable tie..as long as it is tight it's cool I think...just check after a few days or weeks of rain to make sure it has it hasn't loosened

Thanks mate, I'm not too concerned about the strength of it as its a really good fit and holds the boot on just as well as any other method; it's more the legality I'm concerned about, and whether it would pass an mot! I'll probably change it before mot time just to be sure :)

Plastic cable ties do tend to fall apart. An thin stainless hose clamp will work as will the new stainless cable ties .

Yep I think I will change it at some point, thanks mate. It's fine for now though.
