so its that time of year again where the weather is terrible and ill be spending more time on the pc..
so ive done a few upgrades recently.
Ive finally took the jump from AMD to Intel and bought an i5 4690k coming from the FX8350 I didint expect to see much of a performance boost.. I gained about 15-25 fps in a few games so.. Im well chuffed.
I then upgraded my gpu from the 7950 to a gtx 970!! now I can max all my games and still have an increase in fps in them.. the thing is a beast compared to the 7950!!

so heres my current spec..
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M
i5 4690K @ 4.5Ghz
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI
Gainward GTX 970 Phantom
16Gb corsair vengeance 1600Mhz @ 1866Mhz
Samsung 120gb ssd system
Seagate 2tb storage
Lg bluray drive, writer
corsair cx750m
corsair H80i

What a machine!

Got no photos at the moment but running:

Fractal design R4 case
i7 4820 @ 4.2ghz
Saphire edition r9 290x
Corsair h80i cooler

Pretty much sums it up cant remember anything else i built it about 2 years ago! Ill get some photos tho

I was tempted to get the r9 290x but got offered the 970 at a good price.

how do you find you're H80i?
Im tempted to swap mine over for a high end air cooler and see what the difference is.

Few of my mates have previously had pretty well reviewed air coolers and swapped for h100 and h80's so Im just sticking with it

Heres my Hackintosh rig:

i7 4770k (cooled by Corsair H75)
MSI GTX 770
8gb G-Skill RAM
Fractal R4 Case
Corsair RM650 PSU
2 x 250gb Samsung 850 SSD
1 x 2TB WD Green HDD

Use a mac keyboard and trackpad, along with a Corsair M45 gaming mouse.
Have a 27" Samsung 1440p monitor.

I have 2 SSD, one for OS X and one for Windows. Work all from OS X and game from Windows.

Did a few minor mods to give it a clean red and black theme :) Spray painted the white parts of the case, swapped out the blue LED for a red one and got a custom GTX 770 backing plate. Also wrapped parts of the case and PSU to finish it off....slightly OCD with cable management....!

nothing wrong with being OCD with cable management.
Im really wanting to tidy up mine.
Im tempted to order some braided extensions for the gpu power and motherboard power

sadly your pictures aren't working for me

Few of my mates have previously had pretty well reviewed air coolers and swapped for h100 and h80's so Im just sticking with it
Ive read a few reviews where the Noctua NH-D15 and the Phanteks PH-TC14PE have beaten the H100i in testing.
I had been thinking on going for the H100i from the H80i and fitting the H80i back onto my 8350 as that does run hot..
so after reading the reviews and watching a few videos im tempted to try one of the above air coolers.
If I don't find them to be better than the H80i ill upgrade to the H100i next year

If I could build mine again, I would easily go for a noctua air cooler. The noise of the corsair pump is the loudest thing on my rig....

Just stumbled across this thread.

It’s been about 11 years since I purchased all the bits and put together my own machine (for work not games).
My son is after a gaming PC and I’ve told him we are much better off buying a kit of parts and putting it together
(Especially after reading horror stories of sites like fresh tech etc..)
Thing is I would now where to start these days.
You guys are clearly in the know, so I wonder if some on could give me a steer where I should be looking.
Budget is £600-700 just for the box, don’t need monitor.

Been think Intel over AMD, but only because that’s the route I just to go.

Any advice greatly appreciated and apologies for the thread hijack

Cheers

I always think your better to build you're own. you'll get more for you're money.

Intel is certainly better performance than AMD but it just depends on your budget.
what is your budget? is it for gaming? any video editing going on? do you need an operating system?
would you be confident to build it yourself?

Thanks guys

Yes agree, defo more bang for your buck going the self-build route.
I am confident in building myself as I have done it before (albeit some time ago now)
Also I have the operating system (win 7 prof)
Budget would be around £600-700, my son will want to play games on it (steam games etc)
But I also want it to be able to run programs like 3D max, unity and photoshop.

So far im looking at:-
i5-4690
I've always uses gigabyte motherboards, but not sure if Asus are better?
probably 16gb ram (with future expansion)
2gb graphics card, was thinking Geforce CTX 950

Where is a good place to buy all the part from these days, bit easier if I can get them to mount the chip on the motherboard

Cheers
Keef

overclockers.co.uk is a good place you get really good bundle deals from them.
Ive always used Asus boards in the past but I have no complaints with the Gigabyte board.
My system is the 4690k with the gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI board and with the 970 plays most of the new games on ultra settings without a problem.

if youre not doing any video editing the 4690 is more than enough there is the newer skylake chips but for the price hike theres only about 12% increase in performance and it wouldn't be that noticeable in games
the 960 has a bit more performance for an extra £30 I would go for that over the 950

heres a quick idea of the system you could get from overclockers.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £671.07
(includes shipping: £13.20)

ohh I should point out.. the Asus vs Gigabyte thing..
one of my main reasons for going with Gigabyte is they have there customer services based in the UK and also any problems the boards get dealt within the uk so no need to be sending it abroad and there's a quicker turnaround

That's a nice looking bit of kit mate.
Thank you so much for your help bud...and I thought this was just a great car forum!

Cheers

cheers mate. im happy with it at the moment. only thing I can see me changing anytime soon is the gainward gtx970 and going for an Msi or Gigabyte g1 970. the Gainward is a strong card on its stock speed's but when you try and give it a little overclock its temperatures rise fairly quickly..
dont get me wrong though its giving me a steady 70FPS and doesnt go above 60c on the new just cause 3 on ultra settings on stock settings so it is a good card

I have lots of stupid questions and you seem to know your onions!
Would you mind if I Pm’d you some questions rather than clogging-up this thread, which clearly isn’t for newbies like me.
Don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you'd rather not??

Cheers

I have no pictures, but built my PC in June 2014

Intel Core i5 4670K (OC'd to 4.0ghz)
MSI Z87-G45
Asus GTX 770 Nvidia GeForce DirectCU II OC 2GB
G-Skill 8GB Ripjaws
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Corsair CX750
Dell S2340L 23 inch Widescreen LED Monitor

It ticks my boxes (playing WoW, FO4, and youtubing)

I usually check few shops and buy parts where are cheaper so might take 2 from one shop, 3 from second and another couple from another one;-) usually check overclockers, dabs, ebuyer witch most items so far bought from the last two.

I do this myself but I also take delivery into consideration. I get free delivery from overclockers so this helps.. but even at that for the last few parts ive bought overclockers has came in cheaper for the bits

for some reasons parts I buy usually are cheaper at ebuyer or dabs;-) last time I also got 130 pounds in vouchers and cash back for buying certain parts (at Dabs) which made all the difference:)

Nice looking cases, I have a monster myself at home. I will take some pics when I get home. I play WoW for almost 13 years now. Took breaks from time to time for a couple of years. But it is still my go to game. It changed my taste in games, I hope I can find a replacement when it dies.

Nice rigs you got guys :p
I only have a laptop which is definitely not fit for gaming. I have some money right now, and I don't know if I should get a PC or a PS4. Xbox One is out of the question. But I think PC is the way to go!
