RS3.....worth the premium over the S3?

Now we will be having a saloon vs hatch debate...now that is personal. Having downsized from A7 to S3 I need a hatch or a larger car.

'Chocolate brakes'? Compared to what? Certainly way better than my S3s.

Veeeight says people are defensive but why attack all the time? What purpose does it serve? You don't like it, fine. There must be better things to do with your time.

It's time the mods moved on these stale debates that are meaningless.
As the previous poster said - try it, like it, buy it or don't, who cares? There is no right or wrong just opinions.

I just bought an RS3 after being underwhelmed by the S3. So far it seems fantastic but I'll see how I get on over the next few months. If I don't get any pleasure from it, I'll change it. I won't come on here and complain about it.

I'm not attacking, I'm responding to points raised by previous posters :)

Chocolate brakes in the sense that you get brake fade very quickly after hustling it hard cross country.

Yes, the S3 also suffers brake fade after some hard driving, however, it creeps up quicker on the RS3 because (a) it's a heavier a car, and (b) you're doing more speed on the straights, but have to haul it down in order to take the bends/corners. As a result, they are working much harder and fade quicker.

As for feel, it's the usual Audi over-servo'd offering, but this is subjective, some like it, some prefer less servo and a more progressive pedal.

In all seriousness, I too find the S3 dull and underwhelming to drive. It's just doesn't have the magic anymore, I guess the honeymoon period is over for me.

I lived with the 8P S3 and enjoyed that for much longer!

If you've found that the RS3 has re-ignited that spark for you, then it is the car for you.

In my case, the sound of the 5-cyl is great, and for sure it's a USP unique to the RS3. But I know I couldn't live with all the other attributes, so it's not the car for me - especially knowing how much the competition have moved ahead with driving dynamics. That's important for me. :)

Shhhh mustn't mention the "F" word ;)

GT-R for sure would be interesting, great drive, but the gearbox longevity ..... :(

No need to be so defensive ;)
(and bang on cue, you guys are starting to trot out the standard repeated excuses again.....)

They aren't excuses, merely opinions much the same as you voicing your opinion.

Very peculiar 'opinions' indeed, if that's what you think they are ;)

1. Irrelevant, I never take my car on the track
2. What does that prove, 1 lap of a track
3. It's a biased press review
4. It's just jealousy on the part of S3 owners
5. Can't afford one - so they bash it
6. It's just sour grapes on the part of S3 owners
7. Green eyed monster / envy
etc.

Of that list, I'd say No 3 is just about the only one that qualifies as 'opinion'.

The rest do sound like excuses.

.......good gawd, are you bunch of old fannies still at it? :whistle2:

Yes they are all opinions just like your chocolate brakes one for example. One man's chocolate brakes might be the best brakes someone else has ever known.

TX.

Nope.

Chocolate brakes are chocolate brakes

The comparison between 2 MQB cars, Golf R and RS3, around the same circuit, demonstrate that the RS3 brakes faded, whilst the Golf R brakes didn't.

Therefore, the RS3 does have chocolate brakes, when directly compared with the Golf R.

If *you* don't happen to activate the chocolate brakes, it doesn't mean that the car doesn't have chocolate brakes (relative to anothe MQB car).

What I did say was, feel, is subjective, and therefore, feel is an opinion.

Now now, no need to resort to that ;)

I'm fine, thank you for asking.

Nope that is simply your opinion. I think the brakes are great for example.

It isn't an opinion, when brake fade can be factually and emperically demonstrated to occur in one car, and not the other under identical conditions.

l never got my test drive today as the ONLY RS3 demonstrator in Glasgow Audi...is being passed Down through all of the senior/mid management..so it seems..ah well they can jam..it

l will wait though, till the next new one comes along, as this ones due to go retail...very soon with its *** kicked out it...same could be said of the interior...as well poor cars

I had to wait over a month to get a test drive as the manager was using it like it was his personal car. This really annoys me as it seems to be going on across the country and none of them seem to have any intention of buying one! The dealerships get one then no one who actually wants to buy one can get a go for months, meanwhile the dealership staff are ragging and thrashing the cars to the limit day in day out! They're supposed to be selling them! Rant over, had to get it off my chest.

So it's not your opinion it's someone else's? To give you another example I've owned some great drivers cars and not a single one has suffered brake fade on the road. Do you really think the RS3 will be the first? Just out of interest are the brakes better on the RS3 or the S3?

At any given time they have at least three S3 demo's but in the case of the RS only one and to be honest it's not got a good spec or in a colour l would choose
So he who waits, and yeah Tony passed around like a old girlie mag lol

It's both. Mine and others.

Again, to reiterate, just because *you've" not got to the point of brake fade in a car, it doesn't follow that it doesn't have brake fade. All cars, on road pads, will fade at some point. Its just a matter of which ones are more susceptible earlier.

To answer your final point, the brakes are bigger and have more stopping power on the RS3 than the S3, but they also have a lot more work to do and will heat up quicker.

Thus arriving at the point of chocolate, sooner than the S3 and Golf R.

(Until the ceramic option arrives, but that brings along problems all of their own).

So you call them chocolate brakes based upon the review by someone else and I'm telling you my road cars have never suffered brake fade and I don't expect the RS3 to be the first. You didn't answer that question BTW ;)

TX.

I call them chocolate brakes, because, on my drive on the same roads that I use daily with my S3, the RS3 brakes failed on me, and I had to slow right down to cool them down before I could proceed.

Not sure how many more times, or how many more way I can explain this.

Let try this:

The RS3, when driven on the same roads as the S3, arrived at the point at which the brakes were no longer effective, far sooner than my S3.

You call it what you like.

You can go back through my posts, and you will see frequent references over the year, to my S3 brakes fading.

As @45bvtc will affirm, most regular drivers don't brake hard enough, late enough (from his experience days).
