hello, been a long time since ive posted anything on here so I thought id show what ive been up to

owned this car a while now and don't want to part with it so inspired by a few builds on here I thought track day car

first thing to do was a novice track day

only real preparation was changing the oil before and the usual checks, car handled ok but id already spent a bit on that, also after 20 mins tuition my driving improved no end

came to the conclusion the car was far too heavy and too hot under the bonnet

set about removing some weight so out came the stupidly heavy recaros, carpets, stereo and airbags, the exposed wiring bugged me so wrapped it all in harness tape
It was then time to find some ebay bargains

managed to get some old cobra imola 2 locally for £140 and some b5 recaro subframes for £40 posted, seats only weigh 5.9 kg each ! the subframes keep the seat belt buckles so I can use belts on the road and harness on the track
next was a new wheel, found a really nice momo competition for £60 and went with an 'ebay special' boss
I really wanted some black 4 point harnesses but gave up trying to find any reasonably priced but found some red sparco 3 point clip in type for £30

next up decided I didn't need any aircon so that got ripped out and decided it was finally time for an fmic, another 'ebay special' but couldn't really fault it for the price, the tiny mounting bits didn't look up to the job so welded up a frame to mount it to

with this lot done I headed off for another track session

felt a lot quicker this time and seats were perfect but the car also felt a bit flimsier with the trim removed so it was time to stiffen things up

sold my old recaros and that money just about covered a safety devices rear bolt in cage

fitting still meant welding in the box mounts so before that I removed every piece of sound deadening, which was surprisingly heavy, once it was in I painted everything satin black to tidy it up

other issues were the not so flat floor and struggling to reach the gear knob so back to ebay for a floor plate and made an extension from an old socket and a bolt

also found a suitable bottle to relocate the washer fluid to the boot

another issue I had was reflection of the shiny black rear shelf on to the rear window so got some blackboard paint

only one way to test these mods off to oulton park again, this time though it wasn't a novice day so being on the track with properly quick race cars took a bit of getting used to
my conclusion was the cars coming along nicely, my driving needs improvement and I should take spare brake pads with me next time

this will be an on going build with hopefully my driving and the car improving over the coming months/years

OMG mate. Great to see another build like that! We definitely need to get on track together next year. Oulton park isn't far from me. Would be great to have two B5s on one day!

That would be good
I hope You're not giving in and getting an evo then !

Probably not. Don't think I can insure modded evo for £45 a month :)
B5 will receive a good few chassis upgrades. Starting a new job in December, so should have few more tokens to spend on it :)
Can I come? 3 B5's on track :)
That would be awesome!

been shopping on ebay again

fibreglass bonnet and doors from a b5 race car for the grand sum of £30, undecided about the doors but couldn't turn them down at that price
the seller showed me the car they came from and didn't mind me taking a few pics, pretty different to our road b5's

anyway, started to fit the bonnet

pretty good weight difference between the two.
managed to get some genuine aerocatch locking bonnet pins for £35 on ebay
cant decide whether to spray or wrap it matt black

also fitted a touring car style sunstrip but its turned the back of windscreen into a mirror so I need to put one inside the car aswell
cars declared sorn for while so I'm just collecting some materials and parts at the moment

Oh ******. I was bidding on the carbon fibre one from the same seller but he ended it before end of auction. Was a bit far to drive to Brackley for me as well :(

I have a qts Which short shifter did you use
I have h&r springs are the bilstiens a good match?
Currently the car is bouncing all over the place on oe shocks is the polybush worth it which company did you go for superpro

If you've substantially lightened the car theres no point spending money on off the shelf suspension parts, get it properly corner weighted and get the shocks and springs specced to the correct rate for the weight of the car and intended use.

Does the short shifts make much difference
What is your view on the k04-15 have Saab injectors and vr6 maf what Hp can I expect it will be my daily driver so not really wanting coilovers

if its not a track car, you should probably make your own thread, as its not really relevant to this one?

You'll get 230-240hp with the k04-015, injectors and MAF with a decent map. Dont buy the cheapey turbos on ebay though, they fail in about 5 minutes.

hi
short shift is one of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-B...hash=item4159cbaec5:m:mSzmOM9Q_c0gag4pDLOwu8A

fitted these to both my cars and would recommend it, tightens things up nicely

bilsteins are great quality but silly money especially the rear ones, bought mine as clearance items from euro car parts at under half price not sure I'd pay full price
fitted boge shocks to the rear of my avant and they ride fine

not updated this in a while so here's a bit of info/pics
June I went to the Nurburgring, had dreadful weather and managed to get one lap in before they closed it, luckily had better weather the next evening and managed 5 laps, great time and car behaved perfectly just a bit slower than most of the cars there
July I got some time around Donnington and ended up spinning it. nothing hurt except my pride

painted the bonnet in matt black, added some copy focus rs vents for cooling (they've melted so ive got some fibreglass ones to fit), drilled some holes behind front plate (plates held on with industrial Velcro so are quick release) also removed the sunstrip and added one inside instead

added a simple heat shield

moved battery to the boot and replaced it with one of those golf cart batteries

because the car can go a while without being used and for safety I added a cut off switch within easy reach

refitted the footrest as I missed it but put a few holes in it to reduce the weight a bit

found a cheap tubular manifold on ebay and thought why not try it
also made my own stainless downpipe, added a decat, added a catch can and relocated coolant reservoir using an A3/golf tank

only done about 50 miles so cant really comment on the reliability of the manifold yet

How did you do your catch can mate?

I removed everything and sealed tip and inlet manifold, simply ran a hose from block breather to a vented catch can mounted below the bonnet vent
Seems to work ok quite a bit of vapour though and it smells so wouldn't recommend for a daily driver

Looking good. I also have a B5 1.8t for track. H&R coilovers, 18 inch OZ with Goodyear F1 tyres, Full decat exhaust (3inch downpipe and 2.5 all the way through with 2 boxes), and now with a remap. Its really transformed the car. I like your heat shield by the way. Was it something that you just mocked up or is it available to buy? I had to put my factory airbox back in as it was getting way to hot under the bonnet.

I love the look at this B5

fitted a subtle new badge see if you can spot it

also added an ebay rubber spoiler to the bottom of the bumper, going to attempt to make a splitter and thought this might blend it in a bit

sorry for delay, i made the heat sheild just some 1mm aluminium, heat reflective stuff and some edging, just made it out of cardboard first to get the size and shape

time for a bit of an update
ive added new wheels, some team dynamics 8 x 17 in gloss black
also some b8 s4 front calipers with b6 s4 discs and facelift b5 s4 rear brakes all calipers have been painted red

ive also added this switch

i got a message from the guy i bought the fibreglass bonnet from asking if id be interested in a fibreglass bootlid, of course the answer was yes, once collected i found it had mounting holes for a touring car wing, i could find replicas for almost every car of that era in the uk but the only one i could find for the b5 was in america and very expensive before you added shipping, so decided to go a different route

my wife bought an r53 mini so we went to a few shows, where i saw the mini coupe things come with an electric spoiler which reminded me id seen a b5 fitted with a mk2 TT spoiler at an audi show a while back, so decided id get one and give it a go

fully down

about half way

ive given the bootlid a rattle can spray job for now, it doesnt look to bad to be honest, also it has no internals so i went with another pair of locking aerocatches, and bought some prefacelift LED number plate lamp units but ive not wired them in yet.
best bit is even with the spoiler and some tubular supports ive added its still considerably lighter than the original

pretty easy to wire in with a DPDT rocker switch and this allows me to stop the spoiler in any position

internal pic

other updates, after 3 track days my tubular manifold hasnt cracked yet !
i also vinyl wrapped my roof in matt black but not happy with how it turned out so will be having another go shortly

Looking good! Got the same Team Dynamics wheels on my b6 saloon which is also black  any idea where the seller got the fiberglass bonnet and boot from? Been looking to get a carbon boot on my b6 for a fair while but can only find crazily priced carbon stuff.

I was after a set of those wheels for ages bidding up to £200 on every set that came up on eBay these came up as ex mini race car wheels so put a bid as usual expecting to be outbid then another set came up brand new in grey so put a bid on them and ended up winning both sets for cheap so the grey ones are on my avant

The fibreglass panels are from an actual ex btcc touring car that was racing in Europe guy said they were custom made but as he was returning to btcc spec he couldn't use them so sorry but no idea where you'd get any

i need to get mine sorted and back out on track!

List of bits its needing is growing all the time...

Need to sort the V8 conversion, alloy uprights and front brakes, bucket seat and harness bar, and the rear suspension needs fully rebuilt with polybushes and the B7 rear brakes need sorted as well.

That's some list, v8 sounds interesting, seen a few on the American forums
Have you compared the weights of the uprights, the new brakes are pretty heavy so that might offset the weight a bit
Also quite fancy a trip to knockhill watching the touring cars last week it looks like a fun track, not sure I'd be brave enough to get mine on two wheels though

Yeh, i will weigh the alloy uprights when i get to that stage. They're a few kilos lighter. I've just bought some B8 A4 calipers for it and will run the S4 size 320x30 disks with them. The uprights and disks came off the breaker A6 i got for the engine. I could have used the A6 calipers as well, but they're the old HP2 S4 design and getting track pads is near impossible. Keeping to a budget where possible so no fancy 4/6pots just now. I started fitting the bucket seats last year, passenger one is in, drivers one i need to build the frame for and get that fitted as well, then sort out a harness bar as its currently just got 3 point belts and they dont work properly with the buckets.

The engine is a two pronged effort. The turbo engine in the track car has never been right. I dont know whats going on with it, but it hesitates on the straights and holds back, you feel it cut power at like 5k. AFR and boost all look normal, so not really sure wahts going on. The V8 will fix that, and add an extra 100hp as well as nice crisp throttle response. But its also going to act as a test-bed for the conversion on my Avant. I want to iron out all the niggles and custom parts required, before i strip down the avant to convert that.

Knockhill is fun. Quite short and some pretty extreme elevation changes. I usually go along with TrackScotland, who hire the place out and run private trackdays on it for reasonable money.

Not posted in a while so quick update
Alloy uprights fitted, didn't realise how much they would lower the car and widen the track so ended up with rubbing
Managed to roll one wing perfectly but the other side ended up a bit distorted
It also meant the rear end was sticking up in the air and as this is a budget build I went for some fk ak rear coilovers just to bring it back down

In other news my tqs avant was written off after Christmas so has been replaced with an A6 2.7tdi auto which is very different to the b5

Looking good! Never knew about alloy uprights, which ones did you go for? Don't even know if my b6 may already have some or what to go for, never even thought about it before but now I want some haha.

Looks like my car's older brother
