B9 S4 Info Thread

Just been pricing up a 3.0 Tdi Quattro as that will be priced very close to an S4 and rather shocked to find that in order to have Adaptive Cruise which is a must for me you have to purchase, technology pack £1450, parking system plus £395, high beam assist £150 and driver assistance pack £1250. So thats a total of £3245 so that I can have adaptive cruise which is standard on my MK7 Golf.

There is something wrong with that pricing and it may just make me look elsewhere.

Why no flat bottom steering wheel in that promo video?

Shows flat bottom on video from the carshow. Maybe that snapshot in this video was from an S-Line A4?

I popped into Audi City (Mayfair) today to ask about the S/RS4 release dates and it sounds like it's still quite a way off. Their expectation is that physical cars are probably still 10-12 months away, so I'm guessing order book might open in May/June.
Apparently the RS won't be released until after the S though so realistically probably summer 2017 I guess.

Has anyone had any conflicting info? Always interesting to hear what different dealers have to say!!

Brighton audi just said 'dunno, not yet' which was helpful.

'The S4 was originally revealed at the Frankfurt motor show last year. UK pricing has not yet been confirmed by Audi, but in Europe, the saloon starts at 59,300 euros (around £46,782) and Avant starts at 61,150 euros (around £48,241).'

Since no prices are confirmed yet, I asked my local Audi dealer what he thought the rough S4 price would be, and he said £36k!!!! :fearscream:

I was like surely not.......cancel my TDi order then!!!!! Lol

Anyone have any word on dates for the price being released or being able to run through the S4 stuff on the configurator? I'm impatient...

I don't think you will see an S4 on the road before August/September. I have given up waiting and ordered a new 3.0 Tdi.

The improvement over the B8.5 is enormous if feels lighter, faster and more nimble.
There are good deals on B9's at the moment and I doubt there will be much off an S4 for a few months.
I didn't think the S4 would be worth the extra wait and price.

If you haven't tested a new 3.0 Tdi I suggest you do and then see what you think.

Yeah, I had heard that's when the first deliveries would be and the order books would be open around this time so it made sense to me that the price and configurator might get updated to include the S4 by now...

I've had a test drive in the B9 (SE, 190 TFSI S-Tronic) and definitely want to get one. I had the 3.0 TDI 245PS Quattro B8.5 before and loved the engine and transmission but have always preferred petrol engines so the S4 is the obvious step up. Although in the end it might not be worth the price hike, I'd still like to have a test drive and play around on the configurator. ;)

As for ordering, I think that it will probably not be until this time next year, if not later. So as a result I'm not too worried about deals just now, hopefully there will be some good ones when I come to order (and any problems worked out!).

Like I said - I'm just impatient! Haha.

Only thing to watch is registering after April 2017 will incur a £450 a year VED charge in years 2-6 of its life.
Worth avoiding if you can.

In that case I'll be ordering in December for a March delivery if I can! Haha.

EDIT: Just realise that I got my years mixed up and I probably won't be ordering until nearer the end of 2017 so I'm ****** I imagine. :wtf:

Not sure about that carwow article. All the rumours are that the S4 will be automatic only, even for the US market. Maybe it's just a copy-and-paste from the article for the A4? However if those prices are correct then isn't that £7K increase over the 2015 B8.5?

Yeah, that seem very expensive compared to the B8.5 S4. When I bought my 3.0Tdi 245 B8.5 I seem to recall that I could've actually paid a couple grand more and gotten the S4 instead? If those prices are to be believed then it's a serious hike!

Had an email last week from the sales chap, I'm trying to get more info from himn regarding release dates and prices but not got back to me yet but going to be getting my name down for a test drive once they get a demo

I've seen grumblings on some forums regarding the switch from s-tronic to tip-tronic but i've used the trip-tronic in a 2.0 A4 and found it better than the s-tronic in my S4. The gear changes seem more crisp and quicker.

Most price guesses are just using German price and converting to pounds. Isn't always like that. Can't see how they can go for 7k on previous model. If it is I will be sticking to s3

Yes, I'll have a test drive of the new S4 too. I only have experience of s-tronic as my cars have been manuals before my S5. However in response to a post over on Audizine about a delay in gearchange in M, I decided to test the response of mine and found it instant. Of course I am aware as others are, that there can be delays in the automatic control, and this is just the nature of having the dual clutch system. I'm expecting that the tiptronic on the B9 S4 will be good and I'll find the differences between it and mine to be subtle. I am more concerned about the turbo lag. I guess its personal but having had my S5 for a year now I have shifted from being a turbophile to a superchargerphile :)

I'm wondering if the shift changes are mainly down to the software on the TCU... I know APR tuning do software for these that supposedly make shifts quicker (as well as getting rid of the horrible 1st select downshift clunk) however reading further into the switch to tip-tronic is mainly down to the new S4 producing more torque which would explain why higher end models like the RS6 are using tip-tronic and also to compete with other models using a ZF box like the Jaguar XE S and BMW

I'm totally with you regarding the switch of induction. Always been a "turbophile" too and this is my first supercharged car and I love the supercharger. Turbo technology has come a long way over the years and I'm sure the new S4 will be tuned as such that you will probably never notice any lag

Yes, Audi have made a claim that certain B9s including the S4 will get the 8-speed tip due to increased torque. From the brochure: "For engines with torque higher than 400 Nm, Tiptronic enhances the quattro experience with improved traction and driving dynamics. The gear-shifts between the eight speeds are achieved smoothly, quickly and are always appropriate for the current driving situation." However that is not a reason, just a statement. As we know the 3.0 TDI Quattro engine which is fitted in many models develops a peak torque of 580Nm and is often mated to the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox. And there are cars in the Audi range which are fitted with the 8-speed tiptronic gearbox whilst having engines with peak torque well below 400Nm. So any decision Audi made to use the tiptronic gearbox for the B9 S4/S5 clearly is NOT because the S-tronic box cannot handle the OEM torque. Whether or not it is because they know that owners will tune their engines to well over 600Nm, or that they expect owners to use launch control a lot and the S-tronic suffers from that or merely that they had a lot of warranty (and non-warranty) claims for S-tronic gearbox problems in early S4s and S5s, no-one except Audi can say. On a conceptual level I prefer the idea of a dual clutch gearbox to a torque convertor, but have to reserve my judgement until I get a test drive.

Turbo technology has come a long way over the years and I'm sure the new S4 will be tuned as such that you will probably never notice any lag
Turbo technology has only managed to slightly reduce lag and/or increase efficiency and only for certain engine configurations. That is exactly why Audi are developing their electric compressor technology as an addition to the highest performance turbo engines. I can't see that a single twin-scroll turbo on a V6 is much better than two single-scroll turbos. And a hot-V might reduce the path for exhaust gasses but it increases the intake path so again I don't believe that any lag reduction will be significant. I will accept that the B9 S4 might have less lag than a B5 RS4, but I'm sorry, I am nowhere near believing "you will probably never notice any lag", and certainly not when comparing to our supercharged engines :)

Perhaps I'm expecting too much from the new model :)

Regarding noticing no lag I wasn't pointing to the turbo producing no lag but how the car is mapped as such in the way it delivers the power. I guess my reference point was my previous car that felt sluggish in standard 300hp form but once using a very good map the lag was hardly noticeable - the map was very linear similar to how the S4 delivers power with the supercharger

I just wish they wasn't ditching the supercharger :-(

As a turbophile I've never driven a proper supercharged car apart from a Mini Cooper S and that was dreadful and made a terrible noise! I take it the supercharger in the old S4 is a completely different kettle of fish then.

I will agree with @Rich M that a good remap can indeed improve the throttle response and reduce the feeling of lag but ultimately turbo lag is a matter of physics and that can't be eliminated in the ECU.

@ScottishS3 my previous car was a B5 S4 with the 2.7 biturbo engine. It had a full Miltek exhaust, intake mods and a remap and did about 320bhp/560Nm on the RR. Since it had the original small K03 turbos the lag seemed low in comparison to other more powerful turbo cars, including the B5 RS4. I was very concerned that when I moved from that car to my S5 I would be disappointed until I got it tuned. Whilst certainly the S5 does not have that familiar 'shove-in-the-back' of my S4 that turbophiles like, it more than makes up for it by its broad torque curve which starts so low down in the rev range. Coupled with the s-tronic box it simply leaps off the line and keeps accelerating. Not only do I feel that my stock S5 is a worthy replacement to my stage 2 B5 S4, I really feel that it is much better (and of course it will be unbelievably better when someone finally cracks the SIMOS 16 ECU and I can get my stage 2 done).

Near where I live is junction 11 of the M4. It's busy and a few years ago was developed into quite a big 'roundabout' with traffic lights, all timed such that it is just possible to get to the next one before it goes red. So tempting! I remember having a few sprints in my S4 and it was always so slow off the line compared to other cars, and then the turbos kicked in and I would quickly catch up and overtake. But I would rarely get through the next light. Not so with my S5. It literally leaps off the line and I often get through the next light and laugh as all the other cars have to stop. That's the beauty of the supercharger. This article is worth a read. Let's see if the new 3.0 TFSI in the B9 makes the top 10 list.

@Dippy Brilliant post mate! This is what I keep hearing with superchargers, and the S4 in particular, that the power is always on tap and instantaneous.

I will serious consider the new S4 for my next car.

I'm a little bit gutted about no DSG or manual box. So much so I'm looking at the M3.

The 8 speed ZF box is a good box, a great box, but it just doesn't have that twin clutch crispness .
