Hi guys, just curious how it all works. I've set up both of these apps:

I can track the car using the apps, but is it only if I have a SIM card in the car?
Does every feature need a data SIM card to work?

Can the MMI not run off my iPhone's personal hotspot when driving for traffic updates etc?

Thanks

I don't think iPhone supports the necessary bluetooth profile (RSAP) that allows the MMI to access the phones SIM card to make the data connection.
You will need a separate data only SIM card to make the data connection for traffic and other connect services.

And I'd need to use that Mobile number for the apps?
Better look for a decent data sim then

That's right. You can still use your phone for calls/messages via the MMI.
Good luck.

Cheers mate
@evans1089 as @DaveW states, unfortunately the iPhone (well, iOS probably) doesn't support the Remote SIM Access Protocol. I was due an upgrade of a work phone and swapped for a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which works fairly well - I am struggling to consistently have my contacts downloaded when I drive, so they're not always available which is frustrating - see other thread on this; and also had a thread back in June (http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/mmi-plus-whats-your-typical-data-use-do-you-use-it.246364/ ) - the very simplest is to have a separate data only SIM for the car - either PAYG or contract. I reckoned that for typical driving 1Gb a month was plenty. I do love the Google Earth View on the MMI Plus navigation, but don't use many of the other services, Facebook has stopped working and others have reported that Twitter hasn't worked recently. I have used the Petrol pricing/finder service which was useful. Cheers

What size sim is needed?
Regular or "traditional" sized SIM... i.e. _not_ Micro/Nano... :)

I tested it with a nano SIM a first in a SIM converter... but the way the convertors work means it's upside down - a little unnerving as you wouldn't want the nano/micro SIM to fall out whilst INSIDE the SIM reader... thus stick to full size old fashioned SIMs!

Cheers

Well I've got a pay as you go sim today, put it in and tested. Not really much options available.
Online traffic license has ran out. How do I renew it?

I can't get it set up correctly so my iPhone has priority over the phone calls etc and then the sim for data only.
I also can't set up correctly find my vehicle. Any ideas?

Is you car new (or built at least after May 2013) and what version of the MMI software do you have? Only cars (for the European market) built after May 2013 and with a MMI software version of 770 (IIRC) or later have the ability to have a phone connected via Bluetooth and a SIM for data access simultaneously. If your car is pre this date (and I assume it is given your comment that the Online Traffic Data Licence has expired) then you will need to persuade your dealer to do the update and having done the MMI software update get the simultaneously connection activated (requires either the dealer to do it or to get someone with access to VCDS to activate it via the "hidden" menu).

If you bought the car from an Audi dealer I would suggest going back to them and asking why they have sold you a car without an active Traffic data licence. If it is from somewhere else then you will need to speak tot he dealer about getting it re-activated and at what cost

Evans... regarding your online live traffic info licence - this is one of the best parts of the online features, so if you bought it from Audi - go and ask the dealership what the story is as mine was reset to the day that I bought my car (Audi weren't selling any petrol A6's any more, so it was an Audi pre-reg'd car: 6 months old and 290 miles on the clock when I actually bought it from Audi).

I bought it from auction mate, it's due a service soon so will discuss when I take it in. Try and blag what I can.
Is a firmware update costly?
