Audi A4 B8 S line Bumper Removal / RS4 Grille Fitment Step-by-Step Guide

Also probably worth adding a bit of information about front parking sensors as I couldnt find a lot of details about it when I did my swap. My car has them but the Black Edition OEM S4 grille I bought second hand didn't, so didn't have the sensor holes holes. I wasn't quite sure what I'd find or how easy it would be to mod the new grille to take the sensors securely, but it turns out its quite simple

Firstly, I was worried the clips that held the sensor into the grille might be moulded in to the back of the grille and I was envisaging bodging together a makeshift means of holding the sensors, but thankfully the holders are separate little stick-on clips that can be pulled off and stuck back on to the new grille with new double sided tape
GrilleSensor1

Next job was making the holes in the new grille, and again handily Audi have the hole centres pre-marked in the back of the moulding so no guessing about position. You can just about see it here but I forgot to take a proper photo beforehand so apologies for the crap pic.
GrilleBackX

The hole needs to be exactly 18mm, which I drilled with a flat drill bit like this
 35

Don't rely on the dril bit sizing though, the bit I bought was actually around 18.5mm when I measured it and a test hole drilled in some scrap plastic confirmed the hole was slightly too big so I just filed each edge down a little to make it the right size.

I then used a small ~3mm drill to make a pilot hole from the mark on the inside, then actually drilled with the flat drill bit from the outside inwards to get the hole as clean cut as possible on the visible outer face. I still had to tidy up a couple of slightly raised edges with a stanley knife but now you wouldn't know it wasn't OEM.

SensorBack

As the old grille central section was grey so were the sensors, but the new grille was black so I "wrapped" the sensors with a strip of good old black electrical tape which is just wide enough and more than good enough at least until I get hld of an offcut of proper vynil wrap! It's easy to do as the rubber surround just pulls off so you can wrap the sensor then put the rubber back on to keep the edges held down nicely.

Where can i get this grille for my B8.5 S4 please or are they the same as the B8 model? Thanks

The 8.5 grille apeture is different so an older B8 grille won't fit.I assume youre after an RS4 style mesh grille seeing as youve already got a Black Edition S4?! Theres several places to get them including B8.5 versions, there was a sticky thread on this forum but I think the supplier has let a few down lately so perhaps worth doing a search here to see what others are using.

Hi guys new on here but all I have is an 09 se model would this grill fit my bumper?

I have previously fitted a replica RS4 grille to an A4 SE 2008 model, so yes it will fit as long as you buy the pre-facelift one.

You've got the modding bug now mate, prepare to spend, spend, spend, lol.
If you have front parking sensors make sure the grille comes with the sensor mounts.

So true haha.
Looking to change the front fog surrounds as well any body on here have a link to a seller they recommend.

I also changed the fog grilles to a honeycombe type, I got them off ebay and they came from china, no bad quality and a good fit, think they were around £80, sold them on to another forum member when I got rid of the A4. I've got pics if you require a look.

Re. interior and footwell leds, there's a couple of site sponsors that will sort you out, EMD Tuning & properjp, its worth dropping them a message.

Finally got round to having a go at mine, it does seem very flimsy got a feeling it won't take much rough play to say the least

Can anyone help with attatching the number plate surround part? Didn't get any fixing kit with it, is it just makeshift
Thanks

Where did you order if from shogun?
I'm nearly ready to order one myself just do not want to get a bad onr

Ebay mate, was about 170
I might be jumping the gun but yeah I'm wayyyyy too heavy handed for this job

I wouldn't be the most delicate myself haha is that the seller in the USA ?

Ebay seller was voguecustomz
Got a little cheaper by buying out of ebay

I bought this one a few days ago. Coming from Poland so a bit of a risk I guess.

Also as soon as I hit order I realised it didn't mention parking sensor mounts! Fail. Hopefully it'll come with them but who knows. I'll report back once it arrives.

I'm struggling to find the fog light surrounds that fit the B8 S line. Can only find non S line at the moment.

I would be interested to hear the quality of this grille also?

Any advice on this for front sensors on a b8 grill? The ones of my b8 appear square, however the ones in he new grill I have are pentagon shape?!

Example

STEP 17: Locate the 5 clips, 4 of which are indicated below.

Unclip these clips by gently pushing down with a small screw driver.

The grille will now become free from the bumper.

STEP 18: Turn the grille over and locate the 10 clips on the back of the Audi logo.

Unclip these clips by pushing the black clips attached to the grille, away from the chrome part of the Audi logo, using a small screwdriver.

Once these clips have been unclipped, the Audi logo will now be free from the grille. This can be easily attached to the emblem holder of the new grille.

Reverse these steps to attach the grille to the bumper and the bumper back onto the car.

Thanks,
used your instructions to do this on the wife's A4 quattro.
very easy and straight forward.
about 2 hours to do the job.

I did spray painted the metal bumper, Mat black. Made a big difference.

Have installed some LED DRL next to the fog lights too.

Thanks for the great write up

Hi,
Excellent write up
You said it came with the parking sensor bits?...are they diamond shaped?..I really fancy changing mine just a bit concerned the sensors won't fit as mine are square?...and if you don't mind saying now you've had it fitted a while has it stayed in good order?... I'm guessing this is the same ebayer/grill??.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-S...umper-Grill-/231926813734?hash=item35ffea5426

@seanick Yeah that's who I bought mine from.

I believe the sensors pop out and fit into the new ones supplied with the grille.

The grille has lasted really good. No stone chips etc and it looks as good as the day I fitted it!

Glad you liked the write up!

Great write up and still very useful. Thanks ;-)

For any one with a 3.0 TDi there is an annoying pipe that blocks access to the passenger side 10mm bolt. It is held by a tie wrap (which is attached to the body by a clip) that needs to be cut to allow access and replaced afterwards. I also found I needed to modify the foam that sits behind the number plate in order to get the bumper trim to fit properly.

Just bumping this thread up as it was very useful getting mine done yesterday. Had to go to a christening at lunchtime so didnt get to start until 4pm but by 7pm the bumper was back on with the PDC's having been sprayed as well as the big silver crash bar/bumper support, end result:

Grill was a little more than I wanted to spend at £180 but I have to say the quality is excellent. Perfect fit & even had places for the PDC cables to run so that they don't show through from the front.

Whilst I was there I did the airbox drill out mod as well, 3 hours well spent!

Today will get the lower front splitter fitted, once it warms up a bit!

Did any of you guys have trouble removing the bumper for the first time, why I'm asking is, I still have this bumper removal to do on my B8 S4 so that I can retro fit front parking sensors, and at least one of the older guides advise backing off the "bumper height adjusting jacks" to make life easier and maybe applying glue to part of them as that would make getting the bumper "bang on" a lot easier? (just another delaying tactic on my part while I gather the courage to get the bumper off and drill it!)

Edit:- not seeing that picture in the previous posting though!

Let me try again now i've set up a shared folder in google photos

@ScottishA4B9 Great thread - huge thanks! Changed my grill to an RS4 style earlier in the week and you must have saved me hours of faffing around.

Stuck on the Quattro badge and given a good clean after.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I confirm this is the same procedure on any other B8 (diesel, petrol, SE, whatever). the front bumper is exactly the same for this generation, so follow this tutorial with confidence.

I notice you have adaptive cruise control, what extra steps did you have to take? Is it just a case of unplugging the radar unit?
