Carrying Both Advanced Key's In Car

I'm looking for feedback from members regarding carrying 2 x Advanced Keys in the car at the same time.

The request is prompted by a forthcoming European tour. If I brought just the one key with me for the few weeks that I planned to be away and managed to drop it over a cliff or in water or even just lose it, I would have a problem. However, if I bring 2 x keys with me and entrust one to the care of Mrs jerton, I could avoid such a mishap.

Has anyone experienced any strange behaviour that could be attributed to having 2 x keys in the car at the same time, or been in the unfortunate situation of having lost an Advanced Key and had to call on Audi for assistance?

the main issue with carrying both keys is either could be used when you start the car I think, and some settings like AirCon are linked to the key, so potentially you lock the car with the aircon set to 19oC and when you get back in it uses the other key and changes to 22oC - make sense?

Last post is a valid comment. Car settings are linked to the key, so if you have both in the car, the car would link to one or the other which I guess would be random. As far as I know, there are no issues having both keys in the car......I did this when I collected mine and all seemed fine.

Thanks for this feedback. I feel these are minor issues compared with being locked out a long way from home. I guess the potential impact could be reduced or removed by placing the second key in a screened container. (Mrs jeton's lead lined handbag perhaps )

Why not order a plastic non-advanced key (with transponder) from the dealer to take with you?

This way, you have a spare key that can open the doors, and start the car in an emergency.

Thanks @veeeight , I didn't know such a key was available. I shall contact my local spares department tomorrow.

They may claim that it's not available for the 8V, but actually, its the same key as for a A4, so as long as they can code the transponder to the car, it will work. You can then take the blank to a market stall trader to get the profile cut on the key.

Would the plastic key solve this as reading the description you can still start the car with the stop star button with the plastic key, which would mean you would still have the same setup as if you only had the two main keys?

With the plastic key you would have to hold it against the "emergency" area on the steering column to start the car, so not quite the same, as it doesn't have the additional advanced key challenge/respond bits in it.

We have both keys in the car all the time. My partner always has her key in her bag. Whichever key unlocks the car is the one that gets used.

So if I touch the door handle to open the car, my key settings are used.

Apart from climate control settings, nothing else changes.

That figures, so the car must 'pair' with whatever key is used to unlock it. Good thinking Audi...
