2.0 TDI oil pump / balance shaft failure?

I'm hopefully ordering up the parts from KMB to get my BRE done next weekend.

Just wondering though - is there any sort of 'how-to' guide for the fitting of these? Or is it something which is going to be pretty self-explanatory for my mechanic when he starts taking it apart??

Just wanted to provide him as much information as possible when it goes in next weekend :)

A while ago when i was toying with the idea of doing the job myself i stumbled across a pdf file that was instructions on how to convert from the chain to the gear driven version and it was full of pics aswell, unfortunately i do not have a link for it or can even remember where it was i found it but there is stuff out there. Maybe if yiu can find this or something similar it could be helpful.

just had a look on KMB website and they are saying BLB engine is chain driven *** confused.com

To be honest mate when you told us your engine code that was my first thought, as from reading up on various internet sites I think it is a fair assumption to make that yours is chain driven. I am no expert in any way what so ever but as a rule of thumb BLB's =chain driven and BRD's gear driven, thats how I see it any way.

For piece of mind get it done...KMB are great and Graham is very knowledgeable, I used there garage MB Services Ricky / Chris really know there stuff...they did mine and my engine code is BRD which isn't chain driven...and in the grand scheme it's not badly priced, cheaper than a stuffed engine and turbo.

As above , do it , people stuff their heads in the sand thinking it won't happen to me .

I know the geared fix but the double trouble chain fix ? Rather than converting isn't there just a better chain tensioner that doesnt break up that can be fitted ?

given KMB the chassis number see what they come back with.....

You cant tell from the Chassis number what the oil pump/balance shaft drive configuration is. Not even Audi can do this . To understand what you have you need to drop the sump and have a look.
If your car is a BLB engine it has the chain driven set up period.

This is true I've heard many VW dealers can't tell you if you even have the longer 100 mm revised hex drive key in later engines .

Chain driven - double trouble .

any idea what a garage would charge to have a look labour£££

If your paying for someone to have a look you may as well change it.

Mine cost £560 Inc vat...parts and labour...I would just get it done...and takes away any worry of stuffing the engine.

yeah i just want someone to confirm whats in there before i commit to buy everything, is it a big job to have a look??

Yes it was from KMB...and I used there servicing garage it made it easier as it was only 15 miles from me...I rang on the Saturday to book it in and it was done on Wednesday...It went in at 8am and I collected it at 3 pm same day...

Thats where i am getting mine done in a couple of months time and the next day popping over to rick at unicorn for a egr/dpf delete and a re-map. 560 quid is what kmb are quoting me for the job also. Honestly if you are going to get some one to have a look just get it changed its the same work needing done regardless.

I agree...its worth doing it straight away...stops you throwing money at finding out what it is and then paying again to get it sorted...as I said in previous posts mines a BRD engine I had it done...After reading of other peoples unfortunate cases on the forum...I had it done thanks to the members on here.

Doesn't it just P you off costing money to fix Audi's under engineering problem, they should be paying for this.

mine is not going to cost £560 though if its chain god knows how much!

Looks like i need to book a day off work ,had this reply back

Hi, The garage is open on Saturday but only until 12 noon, this would not give adequate time to carry the work out on your car
If the chain drive parts need to be changed this would be a very in depth job, Audi quote 12 hours for this.
If it is just the balance shaft that needs changing we would want the car for a full day

Thanks

KMB Parts Direct

They quote that time frame it's just in case anything unexpected pops up...it took them 5 hours to do mine...and a test drive...and a full inspection.
Respect to your dad for doing it that time ☺

i will be andrew its such a nice car,and i want to do a few mods so looking at the end of june.
plus with it being a long drive(2.5 hours) i will have to stop over with the lads and make a night of it haha

thats the pdf file that i was talking about, thought about doing it myself but when it started mentioning timing and backlash i decided against it.

Some 2 and a half years after I first said I was going to do it, finally got round to doing the upgraded balance shaft and Hex key on my BRE engine last weekend there.

Would highly recommend the service offered by KMB Parts - they had the part out to me super fast, were just as quick at returning the deposit I paid when i returned my own shaft to them and were on hand throughout the process via both phone and email to offer advice and assistance.

As always seems to be the case when doing something new, there were some lessons learnt along the way so thought i'd chuck in my own learning points from doing this. Some have probably been covered already but i'm just putting them in from my own experience.

- read up on the matter first. Somehow I managed to overlook the fact that the engine needed to be at TDC before we rebuilt mine back up, which resulted in the timing being out. Not the end of the world and no damage done. But it did mean we did have to do the entire process twice as it needed stripped back down again and rebuilt. My fault entirely!!
- You'll need to drop the subframe to do this, which in itself isnt a particularly 'big' job - however it seems to be an absolute pain to try and get the subframe properly aligned again when rebuilding the thing back up. My steering is out a fair bit after rebuild. Will need to look in to this more.
- Dont service your air con if you're planning on doing this job any time soon. Whilst the job 'can' be done with the air con hose in place (which we did the first time), its a bit of a struggle to get the sump out with it in place. Second time we did it, we disconnected the air con pipe and the job was 100 times easier. I'm the fool who spent £55 on an air con service just a fortnight before doing this though!!

Overall, it wasnt the worst job in the world to do (its easy for me to say that given that 70% of the job was done by my mechanic mate right enough) and i'd suggest that anyone with a mechanical background should be able to take the job on with relative easy.

Upon inspecting my hex key when it came out, it didnt look all that bad in honesty, certainly no visible signs of wear. There was a little bit of play with the key inserted in to the shaft, but there was probably a fair bit of life left in it (i'm at 102k now). That said, I dont grudge the £300 odd its cost for peace of mind and it feels good now that I dont have to worry about it.

i was speaking to chris @ KMB the other day, he said they have done so many now that it can be done on a sat morning if i get down there for 8am.

If your BLB is having the full chain conversion to the gear driven version this is NOT a half day job. , be warned .
If you are simply replacing the tensioner and chain etc this may well be a half day job but what exactly are KMB doing that will take only half a day?

registered 12/1/2010 CAGA engine code, I thought the problem had been solved?

wow thats 5 years on from the first failures, you would think Audi had the nouse to sort it in that time frame.

mine is now booked into KMB on june 20th, any ideas what i can do for 5 hrs down there haha

Hi just bought 05 A4 B7 and yes it is a BLB engine and yes I'm bricking it incase I have to replace the lot, so I'm looking to see if there's any place in Scotland or am I Aswell just to send it off somewhere for the gear conversion? Any tips.
Cheers

I would advise to get it changed if you aint sure if its been done..I bought my a4 with 90,000 on the clock and asked the guy I bought it from if it had been done ..he replied no and after reading up the seed grew in my head constantly worrying... I bought a kit off ebay with balance shaft and tensioner kit for around 120 quid and booked it in with a local mechanic to be done at around 350 quid... I got the car back and he said I was right to worry and gave me the balance shaft hexagon bar which came out and it had started to round off! ..I was lucky, the parts audi used are crap and should have been sorted by them..I feel so sorry for the guys rhat have had it go and have to shell out for engine turbo etc..my mechanic stated that if you see the low oil pressure light come on then pull over immediately and get the car recovered and DO not run or drive it untill repaired!!!!...

This job is defo on my to do list, seen a kit online but no too sure what am needing. me and my old man will be doing repair but could u shine some light on what kit you used. I've seen this one

http://www.powermaxengineering.com/oil pumps.htm

I understand there will be a bit of work involved with this repair but how long did it take you and your mech.
Cheers.D.

I used a kit like this
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=181686030503&alt=web

And my mechanic did it in a day..but he has done a few before ..apparently its not easy as the front of the car comes apart to do it ...I had timing belt done the same time, as its already apart when doing it ..I know its a few quid but if it had of gone then would have cost a lot more ...it got to the point I panicked that much I was using the girlfriends car whilst waiting ..without trying to scare you..sorry

I have read that it can be a job but like you and 3/4 of posts on here says needs must. I'm already at the panicking stage it's basically all I have done since buying the car lol. Need to talk nice to the wife and order this part up pronto thanks again for your time ;-)

Just to clarify guy , you've done a chain tensioner kit and a remanufactured exchange balancer shaft ?
