Thanks.... Whats the best thing to have replaced and do you have an idea of cost/timeMidland VW are in Cannock
are you after a pump conversion or a gear upgrade (from chain to gear)Anyone know a specialist who will fit an upgrade kit in Birmingham?
Mine has started to make a slight tapping noise from the front around the pullys.
Madphil - Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds like the same problem but I would get it checked out. According to ETKA (the Audi parts catalogue), the early BPW (VIN No up to 8E -6-080 171) has the chain drive for the oil pump whilst BPW engines fitted to cars with VIN Nos after 8E -6-080 172 have the gear drive for the oil pump. Hope that helps.

I have just had the oil pressure warning light come on, luckily I was close to home and only just above tickover. I turned off straight away and pushed the car about 300m.
The car has a BPW code engine, but I'm not sure whether it will be chain driven or gear, not that it makes much difference, I guess it'll cost.
As my car is a Cab, it has a different VIN number code, being 8H17K01****, the H being model number I believe. Can anybody tell if this will be chain driven or spur gears.
Speaking to Audi today they could not say if check 13D7 has been carried out on the car. Was this only for the BLB cars or all chain driven ones.
Many thanks.
You have the "cheap fix " option to estimate for, lucky you. Thanks Paul. Car is booked in to garage next week. I wondered which sort of pump it would be purely for guesstimate on price. It's not money I want to spend, but otherwise I've got a very expensive driveway ornament. We'll see what damage is done next week.
GS.
spoke to Ayr Audi today and asked about any recalls which there isnt, and they also told me it has the gear driven set up.
so this is better yes?? so am i right in thinking i would just need to ask my local indy to check the balancer shaft for wear??.
Audi don't put their hands up to anything.
1 less problem as it's gear.
No need to check, just replace with a KMB Parts direct supplied remanufactured balancer shaft and new longer hex key.
Your old hex key will come out worn.
any idea on costing for this including fitting Gaz, and thanks for the info
Noticed you spoke to Ayr Audi, I assume you are near Glasgow. If so I know of a garage in Clydebank that do the work, havent used them myself yet but they were recommended to me when I was searching for someone in the area to do it, still think you need to get the parts yourself though. The garage is http://www.a4audi.co.uk/
hope this helps.
I am actually getting mine done in july by KMB or rather thier sister garage M B Services and they have quoted me 560 for the whole job, that includes the parts which are around the 250 mark, oil and filter chage aswell, mines the quattro aswell so I think its a bit more work as the subframe needs to be dropped.
