Hi,

I currently have a BMW 530d which I am looking to change for an A5 Sportback. I am currently looking at an 11plate A5 2.7tdi. Is there any common faults or problems that I should look out for.

Are there any "must have" on the option list that I should look out for.

Also, what is the real life fuel economy from the 2.0, 2,7 and 3,0 diesel engines? My 530d is not the best and am ideally looking for something a bit more fuel efficient.

Thanks
Paul

Depending on their shape, folk much over 5'8" won't be terribly happy in the back. I would guess that fuel consumption on the 2.7 and 3.0 won't be very different from the BMW, whereas the 2.0 will be 25-30% more economical .

You should take a test drive at a dealer and use the fuel consumption readout to check. You also need to check the performance of the 2.0l auto.

The Auto transmission should be serviced every 40k miles.

Thanks - I do plan to go along and have a drive of one..

I have been looking at the 2.0tdi. But I can't find one with the spec that I want (not buying new). I ideally want one with the built in satnav etc but it seems there are not that many 2.0 with this (or that I have seen on autotrader anyway)

3.0Tdi will be the most thirsty, not just because of the engine size but as they are all quattro's. 2.7's are 2wd and on the 2.0Tdi you have the choice of both.

the 2wd 2.0 tdi should be able to give you 50mpg+, My 3.0 gives me around 37mpg ave with 70%/30% on the motorway.

You could map all three for better performance, but this should also give you a couple of extra mpg too, for not too much money.

I have a 2009 B8 A4 3.0 tdi Quattro. I probably do about 80% town, 20% motorway and my dis shows about 38-40 mpg average.
I can stretch it to 47mpg on a long motorway cruise and it goes down to about 35 stop start town driving. Cold weather and cold engine ruin the economy.
I get about 400-450 miles per full tank of vpower.

If you can cope with these figures I'd highly recommend the 3.0 tdi engine. Very reliable, very powerful out of the factory, very tuneable (if that's your kind of thing) and the Quattro system is simply fantastic

I am pretty sure I saw a 2wd 3.0tdi on auto trader. Maybe wrong so will take a look. I guess the A5 3.0 will be better than my bmw which is an estate and weighs a tonne (or 2). I get about 30mpg on the work journey, 60 miles there and back but includes pretty rubbish traffic in the M4 and a404. I would be happy with high 30's really

Tunning is an option as well. Before my bmw I had a Leon Cupra modified up to 300bhp

And in a recent trip up and down to Scotland I got about 43. And I was really trying!!

I average 37mpg mixture of MWay and country (semi sedate) driving!!:whistle2:

3.0 is a fantastic engine and if you want the fuel economy then, trust me, DO NOT TEST DRIVE ONE, just buy the 2.0 and live in blissful ignorance.

You can the always admire the twin tail pipes of the 3.0 as it goes past :jump:.

To Quattro or not to Quattro that is the (next) question.

Answer imo - oooohhhhhh yyyyyyeeeeesssss!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting 35 mpg out of my 2.0tdi Quattro. Theory is a wonderful thing...

It only has 7500 miles on it and I'm mostly doing town and country roads.

I don't find the s-line seats as supportive as the m-sport seats were in my 320 coupe. They give lumbar adjustment rather than BMW side bolster adjustment.

I do really like the driver focussed dash and the colour displays. Quattro is the best thing ever. You just don't have to think going into a corner 'will I come out of this backwards?' In forwards, out forwards and probably a lot quicker, lol

In terms of buying one, try a get a full day test drive first if you can. It's a different beast to your 530

Thanks for all the info so far. Very useful!

Another question.., It looks like there was a facelift around the 2011 period. Is this correct? I notice a difference in the headlights (and VED Is only £30 instead of £130 on the 2.0tdi). What are the other differences and should I hold out for a facelift model?

Yep there was. S-line models have the newer Led paper lip style running lights with Xenon headlamps. SE has halogens and a single bulb style DRL
VED on 177hp tdi is still £130. You can get one of the Ultra or 150 ish hp engined cars for the £30 rate

not much on the engines Paul, more on the body and lights. Slines have the paperclip style front headlight and the newer rear LED lights.
Different front and rear bumpers, fog lights, front grille and bonnet. slightly different interior: newer style steering wheel (i think) different stalks, different heater controls and maybe (not sure on this one) newer MMi version.
Unless you know what you're looking for though, they're very subtle.

Thanks. I think I will end up looking for a 2.0tdi facelift and then possibly remap it. Can't justify another 3.0 as the reason I am changing is for improved economy

Problem is, there doesn't seem to be many facelift 2.0 with satnav

Sorry yes the 2wd 177 is £30. Just confirmed that with a friend who has one. He's getting around 40mpg. Mostly town driving with the odd 200 mile run motorway run.

One of the reason I bought my 1.8TFSi. As they also come with twin pipes.
And I cannot afford to run over 2.0 size.

Grill changed, twin pipe. De-badged. Now you can't tell if i have got 1.8l engine under the hood :jump:

Have you actually asked the dealers ?
They must have some, or can arrange for you.
Approved Used Audis and then you can buy them straightaway.

Worth giving them shot.

Try sytner also.

Doesn't the 1.8 tfsi have 2 pipes on one side?

Whereas the 3.0 has 2 tail pipes, one on each side. That's what he means by twin pipes.

Or am I mistaken?

Oh maybe I misunderstood him.
Yeah 1.8 has 2 pipes, one on each side. which i think looks brilliant and cool. :D And that is what i meant by twin pipes.

My bad if that's not how we call it.

not 100% sure on this, but think the sportback has 1 on each side like the 3.0tdi, and the coupe has twin on the left. Double V, can you confirm?

but i don't know which engines it does that on or even if its a pre or post FL change

All the 2.0tdi sport backs I have seen have the twin on one side

Yes I can confirm.

See the attached pictures. :)

Ah you learn something new every day. I do like the twin tail pipe (one each side) look.
