2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Typical that it rained on way home from the detailer, but still very happy with the results!

Sorry guys. It's sort of related to this thread as I wouldn't have had the car detailed if I hadn't had the result from Audi over my oil consumption problem ;)
 
Hi! My Audi A3 1.8 tfsi 2009 Is now on It's first oil consumption test after I noticed it uses ~1L/1000km. Got assured of this fault as I had to top up the audi twice in about 2000km... I bought the Audi (luckily) from the local audi dealer about a month ago. The camshaft repair has been done (chain jumped 1 tooth) by the previous owner at Audi, about 3000km ago just before I got It. The car has done 60K miles.
Today Audi searched the engine for any leeks, nothing was found so they put it on the consumption test.
Audi has nicely payed for everything to this point and the customer service has been good! They gave me a courtesy car aswell.
They sort of have to as the car had passed the control before they sold It to me.

So my question is, how do i continue from here? what if it passes the consumption test somehow? can i request a new test?

I know there's something wrong as the exhaust tips are really black,sooty and dry (apart from the oil consumption).
Audi already had to change the crankcase vent thingy because it was clugged by oil and the head gasket (600€ repair) . This was the first time It was checked for oil leaks due to when I first discovered the oil consumption problem. This didn't help the consumption, but atleast i got an 600€ repair for free :lick:.

It will all be down to the consumption test results unfortunately. Then negotiations with Audi UK. It's looking good at the moment for full goodwill contribution with vehicles that have a good service history.

Audi UK are -finally- repairing many cars for free and also repaying some owners who previously paid for repairs. But they haven't publicly said this.

But it seems you're in Finland, so things may be different again there, because each country's operation is run independently. 1l of oil in 1000km is definitely a fail (the limit is about half that), so I don't expect yours will pass the test. If it does, ask them what the limits are. Nobody here seems to know, because it seems every time a car is tested, it fails!
 
excellent news for me, got confirmation that Audi's fronting the whole cost of my repairs. they may (obviously) be loathe to formally admit the issue publicly, but props to them for manning up when proper evidence is presented to them.
 
After a couple of months bitching and moaning on Twitter, Audi finally agreed to repay me the cost of the repair

The day has come to find out my 2nd oil consumption test results. Dipstick looks low so will find out tomorrow or Wednesday depending how long it takes them.
 
Mines has gone in today for the rebuild..... as soon as i get it back will be asking for the money back for the first fix circa £340

It's failed. Just waiting on Audi to decide what they are doing. Service advisor said it's probably a formality and they should have an answer in a week

1.8 tfsi or tsi are not common hence the low complaint figures on 8p models.
my 1.8tfsi had a chain collapse as a result of heavy oil consumption and I had to shell out £2850 after Audi contributed the rest. this was because I did not have the last service with them.
the 1.8 tfsi engines are more common on Skoda's and golfs 5&6 of the same year.
have a good look at the Skoda forums.
 
And the oil test has..... failed! My Audi A3 8p 1.8 tfsi had used 0.7L/1000km. Audi maintenance told me It's quite rare on the 1.8tfsi, he couldn't remember when they had an A3 with this problem. So they told me straight away that they probably will end up having to do a 4 day engine rebuild, new pistons and rings. But they have to talk to the Audi sales person who sold me the car 2 months ago first, will call me back in a couple of days.

I have no warranty on the car, but It's but from the Audi dealership with 100 000km on the clock. It had passed all the Audi checklists...

Audi have to pay for this since they sold me the car and It was supposed to be in mint condition.

What are my rights here? What kind of warranty should I clame on the new parts?

Shame there wasn't a campaign where we could all take our cars together to dealers around the country! However Audi seem to be caving in now on the subject...

Quick update on my fix from early Feb - MMI still at maximum on the oil so looks like the repair has worked ;)
 
Yes. Mine's gone in today for new pistons and rods, all paid for. I'm surprised that some owners still seem to be struggling to get it fixed. Possibly a very incomplete service history involved with that A5?

Audi must realise that most normal people don't buy a new vehicle to purposely not service it with them. That owner must have been very disgruntled!!

We all know that this problem should have been a recall in early 2010.

However bad the experience was, at least I got to have a good look at the younger models on display in the Audi showroom :)

Ok. Still 120mph in 4th isn't bad. (Where speed limits allowed)!

Happy with car for now...

Mine has decreased, due to Audi removing my Revo stage one remap!

Will be getting it put back on soon.

Mine feels faster than before like its had a mild remap.
Feels more like 180bhp rather than the prescribed 160bhp.
There isc also less rattle from the engine bay.
 
With the number of repairs going on around the country, Audi technicians must know how to the job with their eyes closed. There must be a competition to see how quickly they can get the job done!

Start of my work today, but i was wondering; given the state of my tailpipes, and the spray of soot i had to scrub off the garage floor, will this oil issue have affected anything else like the cat, turbo, exhaust silencers or whatever? i'm thinking if there's that much crap getting sprayed out, there must be some amount that getting splattered over the intervening surfaces and potentially clogging things up.
 
I was concerned too, but at least you will have the 2 yr parts guarantee on the fix! Sure if anything else related occurs you could persuade Audi to fix it..
I'm sure I would if it happens! Bet they would throw darts at me at the moment tho... ;)
 
Love the vids of the repair, pity they didn't catch the owner filling his pants as the service assistant gave him the bad news invoice!!! Make that out to Audi/VW UK please..
 
Just bought a 2010 Avant black edition Quattro 2.0 TFSI two weeks ago, done 40K. So wish I'd done a bit more research first!! Had Audi diesels for the last 10 years.
I've done about 600 miles so far and I reckon it's used approx 0.75L, so I guess it's touch and go whether it's over the offical limit. Bought a litre of oil today so I'll wait until the oil warning comes on, fill it up and go from there.
Worse thing is it hasn't got full Audi service history as the last one was done at a 'specialist'. Plan was to get it into Audi in a few weeks time for a check over.
So looks like I might be screwed if it has an issue....

I feel for you, if bought from a dealer I would drive it straight back and get your money back.

well the guys at my place said they'd just done a car that had indy servicing and that was covered by Audi, so you might be in w/ a chance - they just asked for copies of the service history he said, so i think as long as the car has been sensibly cared for they might at least contribute.
personally, i think your best option would be go to them now and tell them of your 0.75 and politely mention that this issue wasn't pointed out to you when you were purchasing the vehicle; it might put them on the defensive a bit and be more open to consider goodwill. given it's a 2010 w/ only 40k, i'd say using the amount you quoted it well over.
the only other option - i THINK - is that you have a "cooling off" period i believe, especially if you buy using a card? if you're in the time limits for that and not happy, maybe you should back out now.

Done a few more miles in the car today and still no level warning, so keeping my fingers crossed. Find myself obsessively checking it all the time! Lol. As I said I think I'm going to get it into my nearest dealer ( Tamworth ) and get it serviced in the next few weeks. It's on long life service and has done 13K since the last one, so not strictly speaking due yet but I'd like to get it done. Then go from there.
As for the purchase, I bought it private and paid cash, so no come back at all. I know my way around cars and also took my mechanic friend with me, so I wasn't buying completely blind. But neither of us knew about this issue. As I said, should of done more research! All I could find before I bought it were loads of great reports on the 2.0 TFSI engine!
Shame, as I really love the car but this has put a bit of a downer on the whole thing...
 
did you get any service history w/ the car? if so that should help greatly. if not, it might not be catastrophic as you can play up the fact this wasn't mentioned when you bought it (i wouldn't outright state they deliberately deceived you but you can probably tactfully infer you feel that way!) and that they fully knew the position w/ the oil issues and perhaps should have made you aware of it. from what's been posted here, it seems Audi have been very good indeed in dealing w/ the matter so i'd like to think you'd probably do alright by them. perhaps a mail to Audi UK mentioning these points and the fact you feel a bit aggrieved would be in order too.

don't see what's brilliant about it, guy's an obvious ar$ehole as far as i'm concerned. apparently Audi offered to fully fix for free so what's his agenda? wanting £9k in his pocket it seems?


anyhoo, i'm fixed and back on the road, will wait and see when my top-up light next comes on. worksheets don't mention anything about a 2year guarantee that others mentioned though, i assume that it will just be standard and taken into account should anything happen?
