This isn't a sale thread although I understand if it gets deleted but I have no intention of selling yet I just want to hear from enthusiasts how much I could get for my car.

A4 tfsi 2.0 petrol 2wd 2005
It's an se...
127k on clock
New rebuilt bgb engine in October everything replaced cam belt cam follower thermostat coolant sensor new plugs new coilpacks from audi recall, but clutch will need doing I think sometime this year wish I'd had it done while engine was out. Engine has done 3-4k oil changes every 500 miles for first 1500 miles and will be done every 5-6k.
034 intake pipe
Pipercross drop in
Carbon wrapped interior plastics.
Concert radio...
Cruise control
Everyrhing else is pretty much standard.
One slight ding on door everywhere else is spotless.

I do intend on having it mapped and maybe some new rs4 wheels and lowered eibachs but I don't have those yet so looking for prices.

Similar cars I've seen go for 4-8k depending on age, spec and mileage. Yes mine has average mileage but a new engine. Does that make any difference to a 2005 se? This is my quandary.

I'm only asking as I have approached some sellers to swap my car one was an S6 one was a 911. Both around the 6-7k mark. Not sure if I'm aiming too high.

looks like a nice car mate but to be honest i think you will be disapointed as to its used market value.
If you want a pretty accurate price do not look at ebay, better bet would be to check out autotrader for as closer spec as yours to see what sellers are asking then get a price via glasses guide and compare the two and you wont be too far out.
The new engine is a good selling point but may not increase its overall value, tuning mods may also go against you as a lot of buyers want original non modified cars.
just as an example, i paid out £12,500 for my car with its audi warranty 10 months ago, i had a few quotes a few weeks ago and none were over £6,500, but realistically i could get £10,000 for in a private sale based on its spec etc on autotrader.
like i say, forget auction sites , they are a buyers site and prices will aways be held down to below real prices.

cant really report on the S6 , but be very, very carefull with 911's, i've had a few some good and some bad, all depends on what version and year.

Thanks Rob, that's the kind of answer I need really. I have just struggled to find similar cars as most are 4wd Sline or se avants.

I like to think I could get 7 for it as I'd sell privately not even on forums etc and push the new engine thing.

The point about tuning maybe this is what is making me hold off getting it mapped.

If it comes off then it would be a 911 and a Fiat Panda 100hp for the wife (with a few grand thrown in for the Porsche). Appreciate the heads up about 911s I am aware of the cylinder liners cracking and needing rebuild as well as a whole host of other troubles and costs :)

I would disagree with the above, EBay is an accurate gauge of the current market. It's only worth what someone is wiling to pay and that's where cars are selling. A lot of auto trader cars have been on there for months and months.
Don't mean to be harsh Rob but 10k for a 9yr old car granted it has low miles but I really don't think you're being realistic at all.

Being honest, 7k is too high, i'd expect that sort of price for the quattro version but the 2wd with that mileage, even though its had an engine rebuild would only fetch 4.5-5.5k, i know its worth more to you but you haveto find someone to buy it at the end of the day!

Thanks guys. I know we're enthusiasts so we have more of an idea and for me a ten year old car that's 7k sounds ludicrous but someone might see it as a good deal with an engine that won't need anything for a good 50k. Mk1 tts are still commanding a high value, not in the same league I know but maybe it's an Audi thing....

Traders on ebay are selling way over the odds but people are buying them. I'm tempted to ask my car garage mate to sell it for me and he takes a cut. Because people pay far more from car garages. However I couldn't sell for 4k as some 120k mile saloons are going for that....with an engine that will need attention no doubt. There's a damaged one for 3k....mine runs...

Anyhoo thanks for the ideas and answers pretty much divided opinions but this is why I'm struggling with a price..oh and I hate that 4wd commands more than 2wd as it's just added weight and only works when you're losing control....my right foot + brain stops that and they were free.

You sound like you have Quattro envy mate ;)
Haha no chance. Having owned two mk2 escorts and wish I'd kept them I hate driving aids with a passion, although a 4wd when I buy one will be permanent 4wd....proper 4. Seems that your Quattro boys have 4wd envy ;)

Torsen quattro is probably the best car based 4wd system on the planet. Why anyone with a liking of performance buys an A4 without it is beyond me. The only way to make it any better would be to add a manually lockable diff.

Virtually all my cars have been 4wd, I've had range rovers with lockable everything, pick ups with locked front diffs, haldex based audis that don't ever seem to actually be driving more than 2 wheels ;).... the torsen in the A4 is my favourite. It just grips. Snow, rain, mud, wet grass... put your foot down and off you go. What's not to like?

nope , disagee on the ebay issue, its an auction site and is subject to auction type of trading.
I've been buying and selling on ebay since it started back its early days, and have bought and sold a lot of stuff inc cars, motorbikes ,tractors well a lot of stuff and its allways been a good place if someone wants to offload a problem motor or buy a cheap car etc, or just sell a decent item or car etc, but its too easy for the bidding to keep the price down or bump it up for that matter, people say it does'nt happen , sorry it does and i've been a victim of it a fair few times with cars and motors.
Autotrader and other publications were around long before ebay and have allways been a good guage of the market, just my opinion after many years buying motors etc.
back at the end of feb a nice quattro special ed similar to mine sold via autotrader with 50k miles for £10,350 and i called the guy for details but he said it went within the first two weeks , he never put it on ebay.
i did an online quote via glass's guide this afternoon and it gave me a private sale price based on all car details and spec etc at £ 10,995 i'm not saying they are wrong but they are the trade source for car pricing so cant be to0 far of the mark.

two sides to every thing i supose.

what model 911 are you thinking of pre 993 or later.

996 for 7k , dont even go there mate.
I'm biased as far as 911's go so you'll need to go with me on this one. The 996 is a good car but at that end of the price market you will need to be super carefull with what model you buy, are you looking C2 or C4 or cab, i am not a big fan of the 996 series to be honest, the shape is naff.
If i was looking to buy again i'd go another 964 C2 or C4 or better still 993 C4 in one of its various forms.
bargain price porkers do have a nasty habit of being problematic , some more than other and it can be a very expensive dabble into porsche ownership if it all turns pants.
Dont want put you off but you need to be super carefull with what you plan to buy mate.

I bought this 964 C4 in 2005 from a dealer for £18,900 with 60k miles , well i px'd my porsche 968 club sport plus £8k cash for it, kept it for a couple of years and it didnt let me down and i used it everyday, spent 2k on it for getting lowered supenders etc but thats was it, it was a brilliant car.
Only main issue wa the cylinder heads were warped slightly and oil would drip onto the exhaust leaving smoke coming out the back of the back , but thats was a known fault and didnt effect performance so i lived with it.
Anyway sold it after 2 years for £18k what i paid for it.

Picture proof or it didn't happen;) 11K for real!?!?!

Sorry, I wasn't actually referring to the auction side of Ebay, more the classified/buy it now's. It's one of the cheapest places compared to Autotrader to advertise nationally so a lot of dealers are using it.
Even on the various Audi forums I'm on cars are not fetching anywhere near the figures you're quoting.

yep for real mate, nothing to gain by making it up, and if the audi dealers i bought mine from were willing to buy back mine in january for what i paid for it then the figures i have been given are around right.
like all these things, depends on where you are getting the prices from, i'm stating what i have been given , not what are being sold on other websites etc, i work on figures i get given.

Very nice 964 Rob :)

I'd be after a C2 996, just the vanilla one. I've been watching them sell for the last 2 years, 12k was the norm, then 10k then 9 for a long time now there are some cropping up for 7-8k. I know they are probably being sold due to a possible engine failure (of the said liners) but hey.....I bought a 'reliable' Audi that blew up after 29 days. I'd be looking for one that had an engine rebuild ideally but they are 12k (5k more than the ones I've been seeing, and the engine rebuild costs 5k so horses for courses).

My daughter is 10 months now and I've seen that stage 2 child seats fit just nice in the back, so between now and the time she's about 3-4, is a great time to own one. I don't commute, only social driving (apart from driving to London tomorrow), so I could steal the wife's car for short journeys etc.

Thing is, 996s have to be at their minimum price at 7k and as you showed with your 964 they don't really lose money. I was thinking about getting a 930 about 10 years ago when they were 10k and now you can't get a nice one for less than 25k....(see where I'm going with this). I know many people aren't a fan of the 996 but I am and always have been. I'm not a diehard air cooled fan, although I'd have one in an instant. If a 997 came up for 15k I'd put some money in as I'd rather have one but I'd feel like I'd miss out on a 996 first, I want to progress to a 997 afterwards.

That said, I can't shake the need/want for an S4/RS4/S6/RS6 but if I'm gonna be spending big monies on running the thing I'd rather have a Porsche just because.

Anyway back to the A4 - I reckon 6-7k is achievable privately, if it were an Sline and a 07 plate I reckon I could stretch to 8+. When I was looking at them for many months before buying one, they were 4-4250 for something similar to mine. They have stayed the same for 05 cars, but I'm sure if someone was looking for one that a new engine would be favourable than a 90k-sweet-spot-for-failure 05 plater.

good luck with it all and i'm sure it will all turn out just fine for you which ever route you take.:icon thumright:

Just to update this, I think a few of you are right it's not really worth much more than average price ie. 4-4.5k. Been on ebay for a week or two and no bites, it's a classified ad as I don't want an auction.

I've seen so many trade cars going for 5-7k that are in worse condition and more miles, it's astonishing what profit people are willing to pay a company.

If it doesn't go by the end of the month I'll keep it.

the reason people will pay higher from a dealer is due to the fact they can offer part ex and finance so as long as people can afford the monthly cost the big figure means nothing. just the way it is not many people can get theres hands on large sums of cash even banks dont like to lend these days good luck with your sale tho

You can't expect to sell a car at a higher price than a standard spec car. All the tuning parts added by you do not make the car more valuable or attractive to 99% of prospective buyers. I would return it to standard and sell of any tuning parts separately, certainly wouldn't have it remaped or change the wheels. The new engine will be a bonus for a buyer and they would choose your car over any other similar spec A4.
I would pitch the selling price based on what you see on Autotrader and other sales sites for similar cars, you can always drop your asking price after a few weeks if it doesn't sell.

Good point. I've put a link to my car finance affiliate website on there now ;)

Soot There isn't really any tuning going on, an intake pipe and a filter is just putting longer lasting parts but I appreciate what you're saying and will remove and sell separately. I've dropped price to 4250 now, bang on what others are selling (private sales), but mine has a recon engine and all consumables replaced....unlike all of the others for sale.

Lets hope it sells soon then. I've put up cars for sale in the past and had no interest for weeks, then suddenly everyone wants it and even have enquiries after I amended the For Sale ad. as Sold. So don't despair, the price you are now asking is very reasonable.

Ebay is always a mixed bag. I've always been of the mindset that as my cars were advancing in years, then for best chance of a sale I'd need to sell on eBay, but knowing full well I would be getting less than what it's really worth.

As a reference, I paid (I think, can't remember exactly) around the £7300 mark for mine. It is a very different spec to yours, but is a 2007 2.0TDi S-Line, with 73k on the clock, 2 owners, FSH, full MOT but in need of a timing belt, which led on to water pump and aux. belt too-I haggled this in the price. It was unmodified. This was about right then (had belts/pump been done, I'd have been looking at around £7600), and even now the prices for those types of mileage (and more) haven't really changed that much.

If I were in your position I'd be aiming for around £4-£5k. No disrespect in anyway, but an engine rebuild would put me off, as would even the minor mods that you have made. I've always modified my cars, but come to selling, it can be the mintest and most well looked after car in the world: you are still then limiting yourself to a certain audience, and if you want top dollar for that car you've got to find someone with that kind of cash, who wants to spend that sort of money on the car: and most people who buy modified cars are looking to modify further, so they'll be looking into what they're going to spend on it and weighing up whether it's worth it or not.

I feel like I've been really negative, but sometimes the value of your car/blood sweat and tears (and cash!) that has gone into it often equates to nothing to the party buying!

Good luck with whatever your decision either way!

No no absolutely fair points made. I've removed the 'mods'. The recon engine..yeah I suppose it could be seen as a negative but for me with my history of mk2 escorts and minis it's seen as a massive bonus to someone like me.

Tbh I wish I'd just bought another a3 but the 8p version as I simply just need a hatch with the amount of stuff I seem to carry. The 911 plan has been knocked on the head for a few years I think.

I might put it on autotrader but I'm seeing ones in worse condition on ebay going for more and selling. 4700 sold in a day for a 125k miler with better wheels and that's it.

If it doesn't sell then it'll probably get some goodies but I really fancy something different and need to get my wife driving and she doesn't want to practice in a 40ft 200bhp barge :)

It's been on Pistonheads, probably the worst mobile site ever made. Seriously needs an overhaul. Autotrader....50 quid hmm...I'll let ebay run for the rest of the month for 15.
