Voice Activation disabled in Cabriolet

Hi Phil,

Car is listed with "Voice Control System".
Salesman definitely said that you can control your phone with it and use it with the Sat Nav.

What else are you trying to control with your voice ??

As my initial post, I'll tell you more next month.

Cheers.

Amazing, would be delighted if you can. Others will be able to say, but you can dictate texts and many other things.
I look forward to your update.
I am loving the Cabriolet. What spec have you gone for?
Phil

A3 S-Line Cabriolet with (nearly) everything included (I think).

Be interesting to see how the wind deflector works as it just seems to "sit" on the back seats in the pictures I've seen.
No doubt there will be some sort of fixing device.

First time with the Xenon Plus lights thingy, so that should be interesting going round corners ?!

B&O Speakers, again be interesting to compare the difference - if any.

Another 2 weeks to go, time seems to be going slow now.

The Wind Deflector is great. I was recently on the Autobahn and going 120 MPH with the Wind Deflector in place and minimal wind buffeting.
There are two "holes" in the rear passenger walls and the deflector locates in those. it is easy to fit and take down.
I have the B&O and I find it AMAZINGLY good.
Look forward to hearing how you get on.
Do you have the heated seats and hot air blower??

Wow, I was thinking about speed and the Wind Deflector staying in place / blowing off. No worries there then, as I'll NEVER get to that speed !!

Thanks for the update on the Speakers, seems like it was a wise option.

Yes, heated seats and blower thing included.
Was surprised to find that the seats are operated manually though with nearly everything else being electronic.

I was impressed with the CD Player unit being "hidden away" in the Glove Box - good idea - and being able to lower the Screen back in to the dashboard if required.

You had any issues / concerns since you've had your car ??
Anything to be aware of / careful with / etc.

Cheers.

Overall still DELIGHTED. Things to get used to are the Electronic Parking brake. For example on the morning after I got the car, I could not reverse out of the drive as I had not put my seat belt on. When I was getting the Ferry and driving up a ramp, I would have felt more at ease with a NORMAL handbrake, but all was well. Do you have Connect? can't recall if you said you did. I love it, but there can be issues with which SIM to use and certainly issues when roaming on the Continent. I have taken lots of advice from this site re paint protection etc and Love the AutoGlym range. Took me a little while to work out the ACC (not having read the manual) and now find it tremendous and use it a lot. Still getting used to the adaptive light system. I live in Country lanes and it will not automatically choose full beam on the lanes when no one is around. It probably gets confused by the hedges. The deselect Sports suspension option is great for me. My previous S Line Cab was a little hard and the previous S Line estate was even harsher. Took advice from here re how to get play lists on the SD card. I have been very lucky with the weather and have had the roof down a lot. The kids are impressed and my son loves showing off the B&O system to his mates. I have noticed that the Play Music through phone option by Bluetooth keeps switching itself off i.e. going to not selected, when you connect your phone via the cable, so you need to go through a few MMI options to allow. Cannot recall the exact detail as I type, but you need to be aware of it if you have multiple phone users in the car and some wish to play their sound cloud or Spotify or music on their phone through the system,

Other thing to remember is that if you have Alloy wheel protection insurance and have the S Line standard alloys, they are Diamond Cut and many policies will not cover them.

Nice One,
Thanks for the feedback / tips Phil.
Really Appreciated.

I've got the 19" wheels.
From previous experience, the rears are relatively easy to "scrape" along a Multi-Storey Exit Kerb.

Hi Phil
Where did you get this information as the brochure description of CC1 wheels is "part polished". I have alloy wheel insurance so I'll have to check on it if they are not covered.

Hi,
Need to check which wheels I have, but they are the standard on the S Line Cabriolet. I needed to claim on the policy as I kerbed the wheel at 4 in the morning in Germany whilst leaving a Fuel station and not having my Headlights fully on!! Began making a claim via the Insurance, having initially phoned my dealer who said they were not Diamond Cut, However, the claims company said they are and the Broker has refunded the policy. I was initially surprised the dealer said they were ok as there is another post on this forum saying they are Diamond cut. Will post which wheel I have when I find the brochure.

Mine are COJ I think

Thanks for that. I have the standard CC1 on my S-Line SB so to be safe I've sent an email to ALA (my GAP and alloy wheel insurer) to confirm yes or no. The Audi catalogue descriptions says:

CC1 - 18” x 7.5J “5 parallel-spoke” design part-polished alloy wheels with 225/40 R18 tyres

Nowhere does it mention Diamond Cut.

ALA where very helpful and immediately refunded the policy. I don't think they will know if yours are covered. They thought mine were. It is worth sending a photo of your wheels to the Insurance Company to see if they regard them as Diamond Cut and out-with the policy. BTW I have found ALA to be excellent. I read about them on this forum and have GAP insurance and Scratch and Dent via them.

Yes I have used ALA for my TT (GAP and alloy wheel) as well but I never gave it a thought about the A3 wheels - the TT wheels are definitely not diamond-cut.

You're right ALA deem the CC1 wheels as outside their policy so have refunded my premium. They say they are looking at trying to introduce a policy to cover such wheels but don't hold your breath!
Thanks for the heads-up though - I would never have given it a thought until you mentioned it.

sorry for my short post
this coding seems to unlock/activate SDS on A3 Cabrio
go to 5F module and look for byte 18:
1. Byte 18 - Bit 2 -> From 0 to 1
2. Byte 24 - Bit 1 -> From 0 to 1
3. Byte 18 - Bit 2 -> From 1 to 0
MMI reset

It should go.
try and tell me if it is ok for you.

Hi Phil,

You are right - It doesn't work :audibash:

Comes up with a message along the lines of not activated for the car.
He definitely said that he'd used it for the Telephone and SatNav.

I'm wondering if the Salesman was getting confused with "normal" A / S 3s maybe ??

I haven't had a detailed fiddle with everything yet, although from initial attempts it's not looking good.

Sorry :asskicking:

Thanks for the update, Hope you enjoy your marvellous car. Phil

This sucks... Nowhere said (visibly) that this feature would be disabled...
What's the point oh having that button on the wheel only to say that it does not work... If it's Audi decision to disable it in the cabrios, then they should have provided another feature for that button...

Hi Sergio,
You can allocate a function to this Button using the Menu.
I had set mine to the SatNav night feature until I read on here that that happens automatically anyway.

None are obviously as good as having the Voice Activation and agree that this should have been explained prior to buying.
In my example, I genuinely think the Salesman was confused about the feature as opposed to trying to mislead in any way.
Obvious thought is that if it works in the "normal" A3 / S3s then it'll work in the Cabrio - that was my thought anyway plus I could see the Voice Symbol on the Steering Wheel Controls !!

Ah well, you pays your money, you don't take your choice on this occassion !!

Hi :)
Yo can allocate new function to this key?
I was only able to find a setting where I could change the function to the asterisk key.

Yes I think you are talking about a different button. Every A3/S3 has a programmable * button on the steering wheel which can be assigned to a selected list of functions in the MMI but Sergio is talking about the dedicated Voice Button which works on my SB but presumably does nothing on a Cab?

Oh, you could be right there.
I'm thinking about the Asterisk Button. Sorry.

I was speaking to the Master Technician at the dealership where I got my current cabriolet re the echo problem which is still there and also chatted to him about the voice activation being disabled in the Cabriolet. He said that he would be happy to enable it, but would have to charge (which would not be a problem). Does anyone have a friendly master technician they can talk to to ask is this an option?
I have read on this forum about VCDS and VAS?? and that audi dealerships link back to the audi server to ensure co-ordination of changes linked to that VIN etc, so was delighted and surprised that he offered.
Looking on other forums, i see that some dealerships in the USA have enabled the voice activation at PDI.
I wish to ask the dealership to enable it where I am picking up my BW 14 s-tronic cab later in April and want to be informed when I have the discussion.
I also have the option of going to an independent ex master technician who now runs his own garage to see if he knows how to do it, but would prefer to get an audi dealership to "officially" carry it out if that is feasible.
Dave, I know you have an excellent relationship with your Master Technician and I guess others on this forum do. Indeed, some of you may be Master Technicians!!

I'll give it a whirl as soon as I get my cable back from a loaner.
Had to sell the TTS Cabrio and picked up the A3 Cab. Let the modding commence!

Dealers can do it without vcds select self diag via odis then coding 5f using odis search option input voice activation then use the sub menu enable voice activation thats all you need to do then reset mmi and it will work.
Its byte 24 if your interested

VCDS is so poor these days all in german odis is clear but they need to use self diag not gff ok kids

Cannot see what the relevance of Byte 18 is as its for changing the MMI "Logo" Display:

Turned voice control on my 2017 A3 Cab with Carlista module and iPhone app. Works now.

Hi Bill S.,

You posted above that you used the Carista App to enable it? which section was that customisation in? I looked in my new 2017 A3 cab customsations list in Carista yesterday (with Android app) but did not see it there.......If you can confirm where it was that would be very helpful.

Is yours a pre-face lift? or a post face lift A3?

Any chance of photos?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Graham.

Graham,

The car and Carlista are in AZ.
I am currently in NM.

As I remember it is somewhere that doesn’t seem to make sense.

I got directions from Carlista Support after I joined the beta program.

It does work but not so well at speed. When I return to my home in Scottsdale I am going to see about replacing the seat belt with one with a microphone.

Bill S.

Thanks Bill S.

My geography is really poor - I had to google to find out where AZ is ? Arizona.... obvious really? Scottsdale I see is also in Arizona! and where is NM?I guess New Mexico!

I don't suppose that you can remember "where" the somewhere that doesn't seem to make sense was? so I can check on mine?

The in- car microphone seems to be poor at speed as I am not able to have a telephone conversation when moving with the roof down at all.
I wonder if there are some settings which can be changed to reduce the sensitivity of the in car microphone when the roof is down??!
Thanks,
G.

Bill S.,
Sorry to nag, but pre the Carista fix, did pushing the speech button display a warning message?

"The speech dialogue system is not fitted"

appears on mine when I press the button...... So Carista may not have anything to enable after all!

Thanks

G
