2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Car has gone in today for oil consumption test - was told to take a picture with the mileage and oil light if it comes on.
The fact that most of the problems are with the 2.0 and not 1.8's worries me a little in terms of arguing my case, but fingers crossed!
Are the pistons for 1.8t different?

Update: Just had a call from Audi, apparently the sump plug is stuck as the threads are gone so I need to pay a call-out charge to a local specialist or pay 900quid for a new sump before the oil consumption test has even started. I officially hate my car!

Crap!, Audi suck the oil out these days, through where the dipstick is if you have one! I even bought myself a kit to do mine myself!

Yep - I have a dipstick...
I just don't know what to do or who to believe any more!
Maybe they want to check there aren't any problems that end and also put the white 'paint' stuff people have mentioned, not that I would be able to drain it out myself now even if I wanted to!

They need to measure what comes out, top it up, and then put it back in.
Sucking it out through the dipstick doesn't always get all the oil, and usually dumps it into a huge internal mucky drum. I can see why they'd want to get it out of the sump plug.

I've had my piston rings and con rods replaced recently and the mmi oil level has already dropped a quarter in 180 miles!!! I am fuming!!! I'll be keeping a close eye in this and it will be going straight back if it continues

That's my point really: there have been cases where consumption has been so obviously bad that steps 1+2 are skipped. So they might have already done the first fixes and not told you.
maybe, but i'd find it odd, unless they're getting official "try and cover it up as best you can" instructions from Audi.
i'm a little concerned about this ECU tweak issue - even if it doesn't affect performance (can anyone tell? has anyone noticed anything?) it seems like a sidestep - if the issue is piston rings, surely messing w/ the ECU is just avoiding the issue - like turning down your music and saying that's a fix if your speakers are beginning to crackle rather than repairing the speakers.

mines a 1.8TFSI and started its 2nd oil test today after I disputed what the other dealer told me.
My calcs suggest that I should get 4500 miles to 1 litre of oil (not bad) given the results that Audi gave me. In reality a litre of oil only got me 1300 miles.

I topped my oil up after the light came on and the dipstick read full. they mentioned that the engine was "slightly" over filled to which I don't have an issue with as I am sure their accurate way of filling an engine is better than mine. However when I got home and let the engine cool I checked the dipstick and it only read half full. These cars really are strange when it comes to oil levels. I felt like banging another 0.5 litre in and would have done if it wasn't for the ongoing test.

Update: So finally got the car back, had to pay 90 pounds for some man to come out and sort the sump plug out. Then had to pay an extra 32quid for the oil (on top of the quoted 60quid). Apparently the a3 consumption test is different to the other cars and requires completely draining the tank and replacing with the new oil, rather than just toping up.... She 'kindly' knocked 15quid off this and gave me a free tin of sweets (oh yay!). Glad to have the car back, but fear this may be an up-hill struggle. Lets see how the car does over the next few days as I'll be doing a fair few miles!

What was wrong with the sump plug? Over tightened and damaged thread? My guess the internal sump thread needed retapping and a new sump plug and ring fitted.

These test's I believe should all be carried out with new oil. I know mine wasn't.

I am still annoyed after my rebuild that even though Audi did replace the oil and filter with new they wouldn't sign it off as an oil inspection service that is now due in a few months and is still at max. Can feel a pointless oil change looming...

Our household is now down to a single Audi!

After nearly 4 yrs of ownership, the wife's A3 1.8 TFSI has gone and only a loss of just over 2K on the original used purchase price. Well impressed with the part exchange ;)

Sorry to the new owner...

The service advisor I am dealing with said that the wrong sump plug had been put in (last service was by KwikFit before I bought, so they are blaming them...All other services by Audi (it's had about 6 Audi services in it's short life due to mileage!)). Exactly what you said was done, re-threaded and new plug. I guess I should be happy it wasn't a new sump, which they suggested at first!

At what point would people suggest I contact Audi UK with the problem?

Difficult to know. The bulk of issues are with the 2.0 engine mounted longtitudinally (A4/A5/Q5), but you've got the 1.8 mounted transverse. However I assume it's basically the same EA888 engine (check and google the engine code in your handbook) but with shorter stroke giving lower capacity. Pistons and rods may even be the same.

I'd call before allowing the dealer to do any work to "rectify" the problem, if they're going to charge you for it. Chances of success will depend on car age/mileage/history, and your relationship with the dealer.

Quick update on my A4, which failed first consumption test and was then fitted with revised ecu firmware and breather valve.

Despite encouraging initial signs the MMI oil gauge started to plummet after 400 miles. I guess it was over-filled somewhat. Second test is now complete and I have a FAIL. Car is booked in for pistons/rings, and I'm waiting confirmation that this will indeed be free.

Good luck with the goodwill negotiation!....

The PCV and software update are a waste of time and an attempt to claw back some money that Audi know persistent owners will not have pay when it comes to the rebuild.

I'm annoyed as Audi are somewhat seeming to be overfilling vehicles now!! That extra 0.4 of a litre could get some cars to pass. (The max oil level on the cars is 4.6 litres but can easy take 5!).

As posted numerous times, All these engines need the NEW geometry Piston Rings and redesigned Pistons fitted!!

My oil is still at maximum where normally by now it would be under half.

My advice is if you own one of these engines get it booked in. The more Audi deal with, the more press coverage and eventually pressure on Audi to fix free.

The B9 is due for release soon.. Audi need to limit the negative feedback on this B8/8.5 otherwise it will affect their petrol sales for sure!

It's a shame as now I am enjoying the car as it should have been but it was a stressful horror story to get here! Least the 2 yr fix warranty helps!

must admit the more i drive the more i'm convinced either it's been overfilled or something's been done to the MMI reader - paranoid, maybe, but it's odd that i'm on 580+ w/ not even one pixel-row of a drop and the fact the oil level flashes up instantly after all the other times when i've had to wait for the reading to settle ~ i almost over filled her the first time cos i dumped oil in, and checked the level and saw it was way down, and put more in - only to see it leap up after i rechecked after a few seconds.
whatever the result, i'll be mailing Audi w/ my thoughts, which are not going to be very positive but i'm building a log of everything to use in future.

Apologies for nativity. Do the a4's not have a dipstick like the a3's?
My car does not have an MMI reader, and my dipstick is now reading on minimum - but no warning light yet!

Agree with everything else, but I think you're worrying unnecessarily on that. They measure the oil at the start of the test, and again at the end. So any extra oil used over the MMI 'top bar' will still get counted for the test.

I think there's a good reason for "overfilling" : Many cars are using a litre of oil during the 620 miles of the test, so filling above the MMI "full" means there's less chance that the oil warning light will come on during the test, so the owner will be able to get the car back to the dealership without knackering the engine.

I find my dipstick woefully inaccurate. This is full according to Audi as I have just started another oil consumption test last week

My dipstick is now looking extremely similar to yours now but hasn't budged last few days! But started off a lot higher (I checked it as soon as I started the oil consumption test). Got the car booked in for Friday and hoping the light comes on before then as have a 300-mile round trip to do this weekend and really need the second stage of the consumption test completed before then (one time I actually want the light to come on!).

Does this affect a 2014 car by any chance ?
The reason i ask is , we bought the car ex demo in late November and 3200 miles later.

called the dealership who said get audi assistance assitance out

topped up with 1 litre of oil. (FOC by the way he was going to charge but decided to waver it cause not had it long )
is that within tolerance 1 litre in 3200 miles?
cause i booked in for next week for oil consumption test straight away incase there is a problem.there.

Yes that's well within spec and the issues don't affect cars after 2011.

I wouldn't bother with he oil test. It will pass and unless it uses more than 1 litres at around 1200 miles Audi won't be interested. Are you sure the car was full with oil when you got it. I am not saying you don't have an genuine issue btw, but I very much doubt it

Absolutely. How often do you check the oil level on your car, and when was it last serviced?

The light is basically just to warn you to top up with a litre of oil soon. No need to stop driving, or anything else. Read the owners handbook.

Unless you're doing this every thousand miles you shouldn't worry. This is probably the first time any oil has been added since it was built, and all engines use a bit more oil when they're new as the rings bed into the bores.

Don't waste time and money with an unnecessary consumption test. Just drive normally until the light comes on again, then bung in another litre.. Subtract 9965 from the mileage, and that's how many miles you're doing per litre of oil. If it's less than 4000 I'd be very surprised. If it's under 1000, call your dealer.

I didnt check the oil level when we got the car, just assumed that it was given the usual however many point check it gets before its handed over to us.
so either it wasnt full when got car or the oil is just bedding in and using it !
thanks guys

As with any car you should check the oil level every thousand miles or around once a month. The MMI gauge means you don't even have to lift the bonnet for this.
Worth remembering that the MMI gauge is like a dipstick - the bottom of the gauge doesn't mean it's "empty" - there's still about four litres of oil below that. And "top" to "bottom" of the MMI gauge is one litre.

Not sure I'm surprised that they didn't top off the oil for the N-point 'check'. There's certainly a 'check engine oil level' on the list, but that's not the same as filling it to the max.

Just got the call from Audi to tell me my oil consumption test had failed (surprise...surprise...). The lady on the phone said they;d need to strip engine (6hrs work) to see what problem was, and possibly needed new new piston rings and rods (again I wasn't surprised) or a new engine. She said the fact the last two services with Audi means that could've cause the problem (grrr!). Now deciding how to proceed from here.

Did you miss a "weren't" there?

Hope you get a decent answer from Audi regarding cost and goodwill contribution. Everything I've read before says the piston ring design flaw (='issue' in Audi-speak) only affects the 2.0 longtitudinal engines, so your case is interesting. :(

Sorry yes, I meant 'weren't'. There seem to be a few other threads on here regarding faults on the 1.8's as well. Is the piston ring design different?
Now about to pick up the car from Audi so will see what they say, I highly doubt they are going to give any sort of goodwill apart from maybe a free tin of sweets...

.
well, if they put (say) 5.4l instead of 5, then run their calcs against the "proper" value of 5l when the car's done the 600miles, that will appear as though consumption is less that it actually is.

I have had a full refund for my contribution towards the repair cost, which was over £2000. I noticed that more and more people weren’t paying anything and obviously wasn’t happy, so I contacted Audi UK. It took about a week for them to investigate and then agree to a full refund. I know that every case is different; my car was 4 years old with FASH, one of which was paid for by me. This was my first Audi.

If you were in a similar situation then I think it would be a good idea for you to phone them and complain (0800 699 888).

Good Luck!

You'll know if you've got a problem when you put more oil in the engine than petrol!

Confirmed by dealer: No charge for this, or any of the consumption tests, etc. Booked in for next month...

I should probably ask them to check/replace the cam tensioner while they're doing it...

well....i'm officially a failure! the guy at the dealer said the parts were paid for, they have to mail Audi the full report etc and get notice back as to what my contribution should be. he obviously couldn't make an official statement but he said Audi have generally been great, one previous car had no Audi service history (but fully serviced at an indy, they asked for copies) and they paid for that too, so hopefully there shouldn't be any issues at all w/ my fully Audi-serviced car with pretty low mileage.
just have to see if i can talk them into giving me an R8 as the courtesy car :-D

So got the call from my local dealer today, car booked in for the rebuild on 7th April, total cost covered by Audi .... 59 plate 51k miles FASH, and car not bought from Audi dealership...... faith restored.... soon to be back onto modding Happy Days

good to here that Audi seem to be getting better at this rather than squirming.

I am tempted to keep mine now even if it passes the oil test as mines a 59 plate with only 30K on it. FASH with 2 free services to go from Audi so for the next two years at least Audi should stand by me and rebuild the engine if the oil consumption gets any worse.

I was just going to get rid when the warranty runs out in May otherwise.

A bit off the subject but any of you had a phantom black detail? I'm picking my car up tomorrow after 3 days in being done. Can't wait to see the result! Better than showroom hopefully. Will post pics soon...
