Hill Hold Assist Question

Takes the ****** hassles out of driving and leaves me to concentrate on driving as I'm not concentrating on putting the eBrake on. Thus I'm concentrating more on "actual driving"

I didn't like ebrake on my a4, I had a manual car and when I needed it to work on a hill it wouldn't release when I was trying to move off. I was revving and it still wouldn't release, had to release it manually in the end.

But surely driving is much more than just guiding a car along the road. Using the available controls when necessary, to me at least, is all part of the enjoyment of driving, especially as most of the controls are power assisted and very easy to use these days. Personally I never had any problem using a manual handbrake for 50 years so an EPB is so easy. It's the same to me as the s-tronic which I drive nearly all the time in 'manual mode'. Power assisted gear changing. I can still remember driving (all be it military trucks and armoured vehicles) when every gear-change involved double de-clutching. Now even they have automatic or power assisted gear changing.

I've certainly never have any problem with the EPB on my A3 releasing. Just a light touch on the throttle and I'm away smoothly and even better with Start/Stop turned off. With the s-tronic and I believe the manual gearbox on the A3 you get Hill Hold as standard which stops the car from rolling back once the EPB has been released as well.

But it's so awesome when you don't have to touch anything and car does it all for you. Feel like a king sitting there just driving the car and not a lot else with S-Tronic, ACC, hill assist.

But it's so awesome when you don't have to touch anything and the bus does it all for you. Feel like a king sitting there just sitting and not doing a lot, someone else does it all for you and much cheaper.

Correct. It's a pain in the backside :)

(And I can manage to keep my foot on the brake pedal when I want to keep the brakes on, all by myself. My muscles haven't wasted away yet :p )

It's a nice option to have when you're cruising about town and in heavy traffic, I love it. You can always switch it off when driving 'fast' and flick on the EPB if sitting in traffic for a while.
Also, I believe it automatically switches over to the EPB when sitting still for a pre-determined time.
Just learn to adapt to new technologies and make the most of it....its 2015, not 1985! ;)

Huh?

I'll happily adapt to new technologies when they are not a hinderance :p

+1

Agreed, if it is there it can be used to compliment your style of driving. I have it turned on but use the EHB when I am stationary for any length of time or there is another car stationary behind me..

Audi having finally stopped some of the confusion between Hill Hold Assist and Hold Assist. According to the Glossary on their website they have now renamed Hill Hold Assist as Hill Start Assist which is exactly what it is. Mind you the same Glossary does not mention Hold Assist at all. (Perhaps they have decided to discontinue it!!) I'm in the loathe it camp. I like new technology having been working with computers for half my working life but only when I consider it for the better. To me personally Hold Assist does NOT fall in that catagory.

Just merge it onto the end of one of the appropriate old threads.
But choose one where the dates won't get all jumbled up!

Easier said than done V8 I'm afriad

ASN doesn't have the software, yet, to merge threads, but I know Admin are working on it

So for now, its a lock or leave scenario

From the 'more democratic BH' ;):laugh::laugh:

But you can move posts from this thread?
Into an older thread?

(I'm not in favour of democracy ;) )

Admin don't like us doing that where there is quite a few posts. In knackers the smooth running of the site in the background I am told

So bu99er off! No! lol

So your with this fella then V8? ;):D

Without wishing to get into politics, it is a fallacy that we live in a (pure or direct) democratic system.

In a true democracy, power is held by the people. In our case, power is held in the elected representatives of the people, so it's more of an indirect or representative democracy, with roots in the Roman Republic.
Because the UK is a constitutional monarchy, people feel more comfortable describing our system as such, but in reality the monarch has no "real" power, this aligns our system much much closer to that of a Republic.
So in reality we are a republic, although most would not like to think of it as such.

As an aside, some of the most successful countries are governed by "friendly dictatorship" under the guise of indirect democracy, e.g.: Singapore ;)

So yes, in a rabble rousing membership such as ASN, guidance is best given as friendly dictatorship, rather than rabble rousing democracy. Because you won't please all of the people all of the time.

Maybe I need to read those other forums. But from what I've gathered -

Hold Hold is standard and gives you 2 seconds to put your foot on the accelerator to move forward. Hill Start Assist (previously known as Hill Assist/Hold Hold Assist/Marmite) holds it indefinitely until you decide to accelerate. Seems like a rip-off for £80 if Hill Hold is already holding the brake for you? Albeit only for 2 seconds.

So I think it's answered my question. The DSG/S-Tronic box is different to the Multitronic -

On a hill in the Multi-T - you can take your foot off the brake, it'll rev a bit to match the gradient and then go into creeping speed - it will NEVER roll back.

If I try the same in the A3 S-Tronic and take my foot off the brake, it'll stay still for 2 seconds then start rolling back...unless I have Hill Start Assist engaged where instead it will remain still until I accelerate. In my opinion, I prefer Multi-T. Especially in slow moving traffic where you just want to creep forward on a hill.

Second question (related) -

What happens when you're on a hill going at 20mph, traffic up ahead so you take your foot off the accelerator to slow the car down. It drops to 10mph, then 5mph...now in the Multi-T it won't slow down below the "creep" speed (5mph maybe). What happens in the A3? If it slows down will it eventually slow to 0mph, then start rolling backwards?

Don't get too hung up with this. In my experience I have not had any issues with rolling back. It just works whichever option is activated - just a bit different.
If you don't have Hill Hold Assist (or have it and don't have it switched on) you are not going to be rolling back into other cars!!

Not strictly accurate. It is possible for it to roll back but for this to happen you have to touch the accelerator just enough for the hold to disengage but not enough for it to start creeping forwards. It's rare so do agree with the 'don't get too hung up about it' comment. The clearest way to demonstrate this is to parallel park in a tight spot on a hill & not quite getting the throttle balance right for a manoeuvre. This is one situation in which the old manual lever handbrakes were better.

I'm not too worried about it really. I mean I would use common sense and hold the brake with my foot for long stops on a hill, or just use the elecronic parking brake for very long/standstill traffic on a hill.

But good to know it will rev and match to keep the creep speed, I'd rather it do that then having to keep accelerating to keep it moving.

It does require a degree of learning as if too much throttle is applied it will release and GO. You have to be gentle with it if it very tight spots, I've managed it and tight spaces ain't my forte at all.

So after 2 seconds of Hold Assist when it automatically releases the brake does the car roll backwards (if on hill) or does it creep forward?

You mean after 2 seconds of Hill Hold

Don't you? ;)

It depends how steep the hill is.

Wonder whether HHA would hold on this gradient?

Yes if you are relying on the standard Hill Hold it will roll down if the hill is steep enough, if you don't press the accelerator after 2 seconds.

If you use Hill Assist then it'll stay there for as long as you want.

I think they are pointing out that you are talking about Hold Assist, when you meant Hill Hold!

There is always the confusion between Hill Hold which is a standard item on all A3s and Hold Assist which is the £90 option. Audi have not helped by using similar name although the Glossary on the Audi UK website now refers to Hill Start Assist rather than Hill Hold. Hill Start Assist is the one that just stops the car from running backwards on a hill when you take your foot off the brake and put it on the the throttle. Hold Assist holds the car still whenever you stop, on the flat or on a hill just as though you still had your foot on the brake pedal. It comes with a switch next to the EPB to switch it on or off.
