evening guys and girls,I'm currently driving a bmw diesel but I've got itchy feet and need a change.my plan so far is a s5 roughly 2008 maybe newer possibly a year or two older but prefer newer.so my question is...what should I be aware of,in my experience all cars have some weak point, what options are a must, silly question as it is personal but maybe you know something I dont.any particular year to avoid,is there a change in things at a certain year.also and possibly more importantly what are the real life costs of these cars,my diesel bmw wasn't half what people project so a fairly thirsty car isn't the end of the world..
Many thanks,Steve

Expect 20-23 mpg unless long run which i get 26 mpg, weak point i would say are the windows, if you buy a <2010 model (dont take my word on the exact year) then it will come with old window regulators which audi discontinued and want £1200 if yours breaks (common fault) to upgrade to the new ones.. mine went last week but theres a guy on ebay who sells refurbished ones for £80 and get a local garage to fit which is 1-1:30 hours work so total cost £150 :)
no particular year to avoid they're a pretty solid car!

Thought it was £270ish

That's for the V6T (which means super-charged and not turbo in this case, although usual in VAG-speak T is Turbo...) Just got my renewal and that's £265, so believe the V8 to be nearer the £500 mark.

The S5 Cab and Sportback have had the V6T from the beginning, the Coupe getting it in 2012 (possibly only delivered on 2013 models).

I think all in all the V8 is a reasonably solid lump and if you are hankering after even more performance (and can stomach the costs) you'd do worse than to look at @Cuppa's S5. :)

I'll be buying from Audi most likely,no offence to anyone but I'd prefer the aftersales.also I assumed that the s5 was a 4.2 v8 non turbo motor ??? Not a question I know but I'm now curios.

Correct m8 no turbo on the 4.2v8 as standard on the s5

And tax cost ginge ???
£275 for 6 months or £500 for 12. I was so so close to buying an 08 s5 but I wanted better fuel economy than my previous focus st 2.5 and the s5 is worse, just lol. The tax was the final decision maker. I still look at them in auto trader though ;)

As Ginge days the age you are looking at is V8 naturally aspirated. MY2013 onwards are the V6 supercharged.

Never had a v8,I'm in absolutely no rush so I'll take my time and find the right car, looks like tax n fuel will be annoying but hey ho

mines on 82K and never had carbon clean out, doesn't feel like theres anything wrong so i left it lol, are there any signs to look out for when your getting alot of carbon build up?

Normally erratic idling and a misfire are common signs as well as the Car feeling sluggish. Google it if your concerned or just want to know more. Tbh it is much more of an issue on the rs4

Thank you :)
