First Audi A5 advice. 2.0tfsi/2.0tdi?

Hi everyone.

Just made this account so that I can get some unbiased advice from people who actually have these cars.

Just a little backstory - I'm in the UK so not sure how the engines differ from the US counterparts. Anyway, I have been saving for a good 2 years because I really wanted to buy an Audi A5 B8. As I looked into it more and more, I learnt more about the car and the specific features that I would want the most. What I have decided is that I want the 5door Sportback model for the added practicality and I prefer the looks of it too. However, I have been reading about the oil consumption issues of the 2tfsi. Looks like its hit and miss but how common do you think the issue is?

I have spoken to a couple of owners already and they admitted that their car does ask for oil top ups quite often and that seems to be the norm. My initial idea was to get the 2tfsi 180bhp and then have it remapped by Revo to get close or around their claim of 260bhp. Now if this car is already consuming that much oil on factory settings, and some people having to pay ridiculous amount of money to have it fixed, I'm worried the remap would make it that much worse. And I don't have any money to spare for those sort of repairs, like i said, it took me 2 years just to save up enough to even think of buying the car.

The compromise I can think of is buying the 2tdi model instead, but I wanted to know how much of a performance difference would there be and is it really as bad to drive as people say? Currently I have a 110bhp Honda Civic Sport so any of the a5 models would feel like a rocket ship to me lol. I was also thinking of remapping the tdi engine to around 200bhp for that added oomph but again, not sure how it would compare to the 2tfsi.

Please can anyone give me some advice on their experiences and what they think? Is it better for me to get the TDI instead of the TFSI because of the oil consumption issues? Is it THAT bad to drive? I still want a fun car that can throw me back in the seat when I want it to. And lastly, Should i just get the 1.8TFSI instead or is that prone to the oil consumption issues too?

Sorry for the essay but hopefully some of you can help me. Was really disheartened when I found out about the issues but I still want to get the a5 and join the Audi club!

A little bump... Surprised no one has any input regarding this.

Simply put, is the 2.0TFSI worth the risk of oil consumption. Or should I sacrifice the 5 door sportback and go for the 1.8TFSI 2 door and just remap that so the performance is better? I just want a punchy engine that can wake me up if I wanted to have a little fun with the throttle every now and then and not have to worry about engine issues.

The facelift 2.0TFSi petrol cars do not have an oil consumption problem. Not all of the pre-facelift cars do either. If you want any goodwill from Audi UK, the car should have full Audi service history.

A diesel will give a decent shove in first gear

What sort of price/age range are you talking? I'm not 100% sure but I think that from about 2011 onwards the 2.0 TFSi doesn't suffer as badly - not sure whether this was due to revisions and, if so, what. As said the face-lifted 225hp variants don't seem to have this issue.

It's also my understanding that the 180hp 2.0's are less prone to the oil consumption issues too. As for petrol vs. diesel, IMHO this is down to preference and style of driving. However if you are low miles town driving then I'd go petrol to avoid DPF issues.

I'm personally looking at the 2009-2011 b8 model, the one with the dot LED design as apposed to the new white line LEDs.

My understanding is that this is the model year with the 2 litre engines that had the problem. I think I'm just going to go for a 1.8t and remap that to 200bhp if that's possible.

I'd just like to ask though, what's the back seat space like for the normal 2 door coupe? Would I be able to fit in 2 or maybe 3 people in there with decent leg and head room? Or would it be a very uncomfortable ride for them? I won't be doing it regularly, it's just more for peace of mind really knowing that I do have the possibility to take 2 people in the back at a bearable level of 'comfort'.

Sorry, forget to mention. My budget is £14k tops. Looking around the mid 60k mileage with full service history and as close to 1 owner as possible. Options that are a must are LED tail lights and B&O sound system. That's about it really, anything else would be a bonus .

If you are looking at a particular vehicle you could always take the VIN and call your local dealer and ask if any work has been done to rectify any issues.

If it has it might give you some confidence. It's worth remembering that (understandably) people are more likely to come onto a forum to complain about oil consumption than say "I've got a 2.0 TFSi and it's working as I expected..."

That is fantastic advice, didn't know we would do that. Kind of being tempted into a 2.0tfsi again if it's had the oil consumption issue rectified. Would my local Audi dealer charge me for the service of finding out what work has been done on it?

Also how and where would I be able to get the VIN number from?

A5 coupe is two very impracticable seats in the back. Only. Legally it's a four passenger car with only two seat belts at the back. Hence why I went for an audi a4 sline b8

Hi, not sure if they would charge or not but sure if you said you were thinking of buying a particular Audi, they don't have any in stock that suit your needs, and you'd be taking it there for service they probably would do it...

@Kalashnikov - good for you.

Although as he says it is only a four seater. In terms of comfort it depends but is generally passable. I'm 5' 11" and when my seat is in my preferred position then there's no leg room behind me, however I can move it forward and it's OK driving wise and allows a smaller person room in the back. From a passenger perspective (me as a rear passenger) leg room is fine provided the person in front moves forward a bit although it is a little claustrophobic back there, and I do have to crook my head slightly so wouldn't want to spend too long back there! But the seats are a lot more useable than, say, the TT, but of course not A4 practical.

Who needs seats, the A5 Coupe makes up for the lack of these with it's stunning appearance and sporty looks. IMO!
