Tyre size for 19" rims

Hi guys,

I am looking to get some 19" rims for my S3. I currently run the stock rims and tyres (225/40 R18). Should I be looking at 235/35 R19 tyres as they only seem to be 1.6% larger in diamerer and won't offset the speedo too much? I'm also considering getting ABT's 400hp chip so wider tyres would benefit the extra torque? What tyre sizes do you guys run with 19" rims and why?

235/35 because they give you 91Y and sit better on 8.5 19"

All depends on the width of the wheel not the diameter. I run 235/35r19 on my front and rear. Fronts are 8.5j and barely stretch, rears are 9.5j and have a small amount of stretch. Tyre size will be important if you plan to lower the car quite a bit in the future too

There is a bunch of stretch from a 235 on a 9.5 inch wide rim. I ran 235 on a 9.5 while waiting for my Michelin PSS3's to come in from the states on the Scirocco.

It practically turned the 35 profile into 30 profile from the stretch.

For no stretch at all on a 9.5 it would need to be a 255 or wider.


On these cars, if you want to run a fairly wide rim then you will need some stretch to avoid rubbing.

Don't forget to look at the RS3 that was fitted with 19-inch rims and 225/35s on the rear. Several RS3 owners run 235/35s and they do occasionally 'kiss' the inner wheel arch protectors. The standard RS3 front tyre was a 235/35 (255/30 option) but the RS3 had an extended carbon-fibre front wing to accommodate these.

Would BBS SR 8,5X19 ET46 LK5X112 rims fit neatly with stock S3 suspension without rubbing any arches? I'm thinking about the offset as the standard ones have an ET51 I believe? Does someone know what the minimum ET can be with 8,5X19 rims without having to make any body modifications?

The rim sticks out far more than it should, or as all the cool kids say it has a lot of 'poke'.

I'd prefer to run a tyre that fits properly, protects the rim and provides more grip. That can only be done if the rim sits under the guard enough to run the correct tyre profiles.

I still need more stretch if I'm to keep these wheels I think. Stretch has its purpose as well as its drawbacks. Once my air is fitted I'd like the arch to sit nicely on the rim once they camber in but we'l see how I go with these.

Call it poke or whatever, some people love it, some dont.

I want my a3 laying frame with either some big rear wheels and nice fitment or some smaller wheels tucked all round. Haven't decide yet, we'l see what happens for show season next year

Can someone tell if offset was 32 instead of 46 would it still fit snug without any modifications? Would ET32 be better than ET46? Sorry I'm unable to do the measuring myself at this point in time.

And still 255 width is overkill for A3/S3/RS3 series .. That is for A4/A5 onwards ..

Above is OEM STD; the 8.5J front with 255/30 was 'option' - and I have BOTH the STD 8J front and rear for winter and 'option' for summer...

MG those 35 profile is way too skinny it look awful .. am checking it here :
there is no tyre rubber left you must feel all stones and humps and bumps very hardly on uk BAD roads
I have now 225/45/17 .. Brigestone potenza S001 great tyres
What is the limit for my A3 TDi 2.0 I thinking 18'' 19'' is overkill I would say ..
