Hello thought i would start a build thread on my audi s3, i got looots of plans and ill be postiong all the upgrades and mods that i am going to do and also posting pictures of what i have done .

Great! What have you got planned? BT build or squeeze as much as you from KO4?

I'm planning at garret gt30 or gt32 build ,looking to get turbo and internals from JBS or APR need to compare prices ,luckily I can do the work my self so I'm saving a fair bit ,Id like to hit 420 bhp mark but I want to put all the best parts possible and make sure that it can be used everyday without worrying if it's going to start today or not ,but before all that got suspension brakes ect.. To do ,I have order my exhaust I'll be posting hopefully at the weekend some pictures of it fitted :)

What my car looks like at the moment , it's as I boart it

Yay a local build thread that I will actually be able to see progress

Did you decide which coilovers ?

GT32??...

Personally I'd stick to something like the Owen Developments M-Spec HTA 3071 which is a Garrett GT3071 with a metal cage bearing upgrade and billet HTA comp wheel... you should also look at using a tubular mani such as the TSR one with a Tial V-Band hotside (0.63 a/r) or if going stroker then consider the Pag Parts 0.72 a/r hotside...

Why specifically JBS as a supplier? are you considering going stroker? if rebuilding the bottom end with new pistons etc then the cost difference is around 500 quid for a crank on top of all the other stuff you would have bought anyway

<tuffty/>

hi thanks very much for the advice , im considering a stroker kit 2.0 fsi crank 20mm wrist pin conrods and forged pistons this is what jbs recomend and sell , i been wanting to use jbs as i have spoken to somone that had their r32 turbo charged and the build quality of the home made products are really very good as i been told , so would you recomend using owen developments insted of jbs ?

im no longer considering using a gt32 be to much turbo lag and its a to bigger turbo , this is my first ever like build never done anything like this, so i need to do lots of reaserch , and all the advice you guys give me is awsome :)

a guy a work recomended dont know why ?? he recons was really good on his car , the only things ill be doing my self is engine internals and valves fuel pump injectors clutch ect.. and like you say ill be getting a to set up mapping the guy i work with is an audi master tech he will be helping me

Mapping ME7 yourself?? doable but very steep learning curve and potentially expensive to get the right software

Fitting a GT3071 is only half the job.. you will need to fit a lot more heat shielding, fabricate a downpipe, fabricate the wastegate pipework, fabricate coolant and oil lines, fabricate the TIP etc...

I assume you have done a little research on this? if not you should at least have a read through my build thread... kinda been there, seen it and got the t-shirt on this

<tuffty/>

no not doing mapping my self no way how would i do that i word it wrong ment to say he be helping me doing internals and this is why wanted to use JBS they supply the hole lot for the turbo side of it
  • JBS Garrett Turbo
  • JBS Garrett Tubular Equal Length Manifold
  • JBS 3" Custom Downpipe
  • JBS Custom Top Boost Hose
  • JBS Custom Intake Pipe Coupler
  • JBS Custom Braided Coolant Feed Lines
  • JBS Custom Braided Oil Return Pipes
  • JBS Custom Banjo Bolt
  • JBS Top Boost Hose
  • Oil Feed Washer
  • 10mm Oil Feed Copper Washer
  • 14mm Coolant Return Washer
  • Gasket Kit for the Above
, did relise about sheilds suppose kinda ovs with all extra heat

I love the way JBS just prefix everything JBS... makes me roffle

Having built plenty of big turbo 1.8t's I can honestly say there is no such thing as a kit I would ever use... there is always a compromise somewhere...

I have seen a few cars with JBS kits... its not how I would go about it but I guess it fills a purpose especially if you can't fabricate stuff yourself...

Just be aware (I am assuming you are of course) that just fitting a turbo kit won't necessarily get you to the power you are expecting without help from other components... decent FMIC, inlet manifold etc...

I assume you are doing a full valve train too? a GT3071 will need it... large port head is an idea too

The Owens M-Spec stuff is top quality... metal cage bearing and billet comp wheel... very good turbo

No mention of a wastegate in that JBS list either I see..

<tuffty/>

i can not fabricate anything got no trainning in fabricating , and yes idont know everything i need i dont know half the things i need atmo i have literlly only just this week doing research to what is needed i wont be doing anything till at least next summer as i need to find out eveything i need and buy the parts no need to get all ****** i been told jbs are really good ? so what? its the only company i been looking at to do the build atmo im sure ill be doing it differently
?

The last JBS built S3 I saw using their kit essentially use the TSR manifold, downpipe and coolant/oil line kit... you'd be better off I reckon going direct to TSR and order from them

Get the turbo from Owens as JBS would have got it from them anyway... the M-Spec stuff is expensive but its designed to be more durable than the off the shelf turbo... Garretts ball bearing turbos have a plastic bearing cage that melts when pushed... if you plan to track day the car or something then at the very least consider doing the metal cage upgrade that Owens do....

You will still need to do a little fabrication work but nothing too extensive... I ran an S4 Bosch MAF housing and 90mm TIP made from a couple of silicon bends and an alloy bend... find someone that can TIG alloy if you can as he will be your best friend

Whats your plans for internals? stroker or keeping the 1.8? going for a rebore and new pistons?

<tuffty/>

Hi thanks very much for the advice the way you are saying to do it seems better than what I planed like I said never done anything like this :) i know a local company that I'll be useing they to tig welding and the do head work I'll drop my head to them when I come around to doing it I'll get them to change the valves , is it worth getting it ported and polished ? And what about cams? Do I need to put uprated cams? And I wasn't planning doing a stroker was just going to do forged internals is it worth doing a stroker?

If you are only looking for 400-450 then an unported large port head will do the trick... inlets generally just get a lick over to aid fuel/air mixing but you are best getting the exhausts done in line with whatever exhaust manifold you are planning to use and intended use for the car...

I had my head ported a little to open them up a little more but keep port velocity up to aid spool... my whole build was based around making a GT35 drivable which I believe I have achieved...

Here is a comparison of a std S3, Hybrid K04 S3 and my GT35

As you can see with a stoker and the right bits the car is not the lag monster the size of the turbo suggests

Which brings us on to cams... the graphs above actually highlight the limitations of std cams... all 20v torque will tail off from around 6k... mines a little later but that more due to the size of the turbo than anything but cams are limiting my power...

I would say yes to cams if going GT35 but you can take them or leave them on a GT30...

Stroker will cost you around 500 quid on top of the bits you will already be buying to build the engine... its a no brainer for the advantages it gives... the stroker/GT35 setup produces more torque and power everywhere than my old GT30 setup on the 1.8... a GT30 and stroker combo would be better again

I was just looking at the torque and power on yours Vs mine,and it's fascinating how similar in many ways they both are.

The torque comes in around the same sort of region,and has a nice smooth look to it,and whilst yours holds on a bit further,mine is rolling off as the car drops boost on the RR.

I will be put differnt cams in I mean whilst the head is off striped makes sense to , we're did you get you intake and exhaust valves from ? And also we're did you get the stroker kit ? And so would you sujest going fit a gt35 insted of a gt30?

I got all my stuff from Bill at Badger 5... I help him out at the weekends as he is a close friend but of course it helps me out with my hobby too :)

I have built a few engines at Bill's and almost everyone now is a stroker... there are three project cars at his place currently all getting stroker builds and GT35's so a GT35 is pretty much entry level these days LOL

Right set of parts and a GT35 will see a comfortable 500hp and using the 0.63 hotside like me would make it nice a drivable... will have a bit more data soon as I am fitting cams to mine and Bill will be mapping one of the project cars soon..

<tuffty/>
500 + machining + pistons.
Its a lot more than £500, the parts alone are over 1k. which is why I didn't do it.
I think when I was looking I added it up to be just short of £1300 inc overbore.

It's 500 more if rebuilding the bottom end with new pistons mate... Key phrase in my post is "build the engine" and by build I don't mean slapping a set of rods in...

If you are planning a bottom end rebuild and already budgeted for rods, pistons etc then going stroker requires just a crank and 20v oil sprocket... Stroker pistons are the same price give or take a few dollars..

Rebuild, on an unknown milage bottom end would usually for me include bores...
I think the comparison statement as intended of "go stroker" for less than £500 more is when oversize pistons are considered, so rebore is on thecards anyhow, so for £500 more you got a stroker.. So why not, it makes it sooooo much nicer.

I say this against the backdrop of calls I receive weekly from customer where x,y,z 'other' tuners or "mates" suggest they fit forged internals, which for many interpret as includes pistons.. Fitting New forged pistons of std bore size into high miler bottom ends is just daft advise.. Clearances will be all over the shop and forged pistons for majority builds are'nt a requirement anyhows.

If rebore is planned to go oversize, consider stroker crank.. Its not as big a leap as you think

But all this is undersided yet might keep standard turbo yet see how it goes

hehe, all the previous posts and plans and then this....................... lol

Best budget your build, and see if you really want to spend that on achieving your bhp goal, and then understand it will be for the fun of it as next to none of this spend will be recovered when you come to sell the car.

Labour of luv, not for monetary gain on resale.

hi , when i come around to doing it begining of next year as i wont to change wheels, brakes, bushes,arbs, coilovers, and some cosmetic stuff first ,and would you be able to supply me with all the parts that you would remcomend fitting ?and were are you based in the uk ?and could you PM me about prices for parts and a budget i need i was think to do it be around 8k/8.5k (just engine mods)

8.5K in one lump, wouldn't you have been better just buying something with the power your looking for if money is no object?

i really really like the car i could of boart an evo or an subaru but didnt want to want some differnt

No thats fair enough mate, it looks sweet. I hope you get to do what you plan and get the results your looking for
If I had a spare 8.5K I would probably spend the lot on the car also
Steve

haha im only 19 im bit of boaring ****** i dont go out driking or anything i just love working on cars im still learning but their nothing else i like doing better than learning how to do new things on cars lol
