Hi sorry for yet again another thread but I am just try to et some ideas of what I want to do to my car it's a 170 tdi, I just wondered if someone could tell me what the best mods are for engine preformance? For example does a inter cooler make much gains? I don't really want to make it to loud as I like it quiet so don't really want a decat or do I have to? My first time modding also as I have only ever bought cars already done..

Depends on how much performance you want out of the car. A decent remap will work wonders, I personally would get the DPF removed as well at the same time, this will help the power and fuel economy. The 170 TDI seems to sufffer with DPF issues more than a lot of other cars.
If you are keeping the standard turbo then the standard intercooler will be good enough.
If you are anywhere near Manchester look up Rick at Unicorn Motor developments, He is a forum sponsor.

Yes, at least basic remap and DPF removal, that will make 200+HP with 400+Nm easily. Then you will see if you want more :)

hello mate. I have the same car as you and i have been looking at what the tuning possibilities are for the 170 tdi. I came across a company called Darkside Developments who offer turbo kits ranging from i think £1200-3000+ which can give power anywhere from 220-340BHP. check them out, as im thinking of getting my tdi upto around 260BHP. good luck

Hi mate , Ye I had a look at them last night do you know what the quality of parts are like as they make their own dont they? Have you made any tuning mods already? Ye I am hoping to get the same but really I don't wanna take the dpf off as I have heard mixed things about it? What sort of routes are you thinking about bud...

yes they make there own parts bud, im unsure of the build quality as ive not really seen any reviews but i havent looked to be honest. There are videos of some of their cars on the 1/4 mile on youtube. ive only owned my car for less than a month so not going to be modding it till next year, i was looking at the dpf removal and a remap which is good for around 200bhp but im thinking the novelty will wear off and i will want more power so was looking at the turbo kits. do some research mate and see if there is any reviews on them. keep me posted and ill do them same

DPF Delete, panel filter and a remap will take you to around 200BHP and can very in torque.

Mine is PDD170. DPF Delete and Milltek exhaust, pipercros pannel filter and custom code phase 2 map. Getting 201BHP and 382lbs torque.

Smoke is not "that" bad, have seen worse but you can see it.

Can get hybrids which will take you to around 240BHP, hybrid will consist of same turbo with upgraded internals.

Failing that as stated above you can get a larger turbo but this will require new intake manifold as flange will be different.

Darkside is a very good firm , but with all the custom they have got they have whaked their prices up. The turbos can be sourced for alot cheaper direct from supliers and then that only leaves sourcing/manufacturing new intake manifolds.

personally i wouldnt go near darkside developments **** at all

Care to expand? I'm booked in for a remap with them in a couple of months' time...

Some decent tyres in order to get the power down if yours isn't quattro.

Thanks for the help guys !! Leeds2592 I was thinking some toyo proxies is there any recommendations on tyres? Johnathaan will I still see the same gains if get a hybrid and keep my dpf or Isit just a hit and miss.

I don't believe Darkside are any better at mapping diesel cars than a lot of other people. What they are good at is pushing the limits with a very good selection of hardware upgrades. There prices have certainly gone up over the years they used to be one of the cheapest around for a basic remap. When I was looking to get my car mapped I looked at everybody in the country and in the end came down to Rick at Unicorn motor developments.
He is very very good at what he does. All the maps are written by himself and he is very focussed on getting what you want.
I had my car remapped and the DPF removed. It's had an intercooler and exhaust mods but runs flawlessly with no smoke unless really going for it and then it's a very small amount. On the quarter it runs 13.35 seconds at 105mph but will still do high 40's on a run or 35mpg around town, not bad for a 300 bhp+ 1.8 tonne quattro estate.

DPF is just another obstruction in the pipe line. Quicker you can get rid of gasses the quicker you can run fuel/air through.

Ideally you need to start with the basics ie removing filteration and give a more effecient flow and then look at uprating componenets. I cannot say i have ever heard a hybrid/uprated turbo being fit and the DPF still being left in. What worries you about removing the DPF?

Also in regards to tyres, not many tyres will hold up to big torque and with it all being at low RPM it tends to come in a burst (especially on the PD engine) so is very difficult to control. My friend has just had a larger turbo, injectors the lot on his 2.0tdi golf. It is now running 284BHP and 435torque - he has fit a LSD and that still struggles to get power down but i suppose LSD will aid. Also budget in a uprated clutch.

Also Like Karl says above, Rick has done alot of work on members cars on here and i have not heard a bad thing yet.

not far from darkside and had to clean up their mess a few times with dead engines etc .also if you dont want your car to look like a steam train when your on wot then look else where for a map . 2 ppl i personally know who live on my estate spend most of the time washing there cars asses as there maps are filthy , a good map should be clean power not tons of unburnt fuel

Don't do the hybrid route been through 3 on the golf and 1 on a3 there *****

BigAl23 Really ? I thought they were meant to be better and stronger than a normal one?

I jut don't want my car to be letting out a pile of black smoke that's all I hate seeing it come out of other cars lol I suppose if it has to be it will be lol also as its my first nice car I saved up for I don't wanna ruin it lol what's the best way do the basics like for letting the engine breathe and stuff?

I had my 170TDI DPF removed and remapped by Rick @ Unicorn. Cannot recommend him enough if you want a custom map for your car.

No issues of smoking and returned 55mpg on my daily commute. Couldn't complain as it was a quick and economical car. All depends what your end goal is. It's much harder to extract power out of a TDI outside of a remap, unless you want to go BT.

If you don't use junk diesel and exercise the engine you don't really get any smoke, our 140s hardly do at all.

I know what you mean JGrant - i was in the same position lol

Saw all these cars chucking out smoke and thought to myself kinhell they look broke! Now mine does it and im like :banghead:

But as mentioned above, a proper custom map set up on dyno will reduce this from happening.

You need to decide what you want to achieve and how much you are prepared to spend.

With diesel my view is to focus money on hardware to remove restrictions on the intake and the exhaust system. Then get a remap on a rolling road to match your style of driving and requirements. My focus was on linear torque and not over stressing the components, not bragging rights about maximum BHP.

I made a number of hardware changes over a short period of time before getting the custom remap done. From my experience the full Miltek exhaust with large bore down pipe from the turbo made the biggest single difference in terms of performance. I didn't have the DPF to worry about.

See details below, effortless pace and according to DIS 2 the car averages around 60mpg. What's not to like!

Ok great thanks guys !! I think I'm going to get the dpf removed when I buy a intercooler and maybe new air filter? Also isit worth having my turbo recoditioned or can I buy a stronger one. Also what's the best clutch to get I haven't ever had one changed before lol such a amateur !!

The issue with smoke is when people fit too large turbochargers/nozzles and expect them to spool as well as the factory items. I for one would not put a gtb2260vk on and engine smaller than 2.5L, audi knew a thing or 2 when they asked garrett to come with a turbocharger good for 300 Bhp and decent spool on a 6 cylinder engine !

Dpf delete egr delete cooler delete milltek panel filter and remap will get you approx 210bhp lots of torque and better mpg
