95 Or 98?

With the S3 not being your run of the mill car, is it better to run super unleaded? I know it shouldn't knock on 95 but is there a discernable difference between running on 98?

In terms of cost its something like £160 more a year over the normal fuel.

Your particular car will only benefit if it has knock sensor(s), and can advance the iginition sufficiently to take advantage of 98RON. It will say in the handbook what fuel is recommended.

It's just all cars made today have anti-knock sensors, and they have variable valve timing as well..

Most engine ECU's will have the instruction to ****** the timing when knock is detected

Not all engines will have higher than usual compression ratios
Not all engines will have ECU instructions to Advance the timing to take advantage of higher RON fuels

Give a gold star to that man Again one of the points I was making is that, because not all cars can do this then in everyday motoring in every day cars, there is no advantage...

Hence why, only S3's recommend 98RON (or better)

AFAIK all the other A3's specify 95RON on the inside of the fuel flap (can anyone provide a photo if not the case?) - with no Performance advantage if they fill with 98RON.

I don't seem to remember seeing anything about using higher octane fuel inside my fuel flap, however you will hard pushed to generate any increase in power into making your journey home any quicker. Strange how everyone goes on about increases in power when it is torque that really counts. I guess it's all just pub talk.

All this talk of torque reminds me of Carroll Shelby, who once said "BHP is a measure of how hard you hit the tyre wall, torque is a measure of how far you push the tyre wall."

The full quote was something like:

Err, maybe because it was designed that way? If you look at modern direct injection turbo charged engines the torque has become quite diesel like thus top speed, acceleration and mpg have all improved over larger engines that don't have the same technology but similar bhp.

That is correct as for their size of engine and power output the last f1 engines didn't proportionately have a great deal of torque, however the cars were very light and very powerful so bhp per ton was extremely high. But then you look at today's f1 engines, 1.6 turbo v6 with ers , similar weight, have far more torque and top speeds are far higher....
