Alright guys I've got the S3, it's my fourth Audi in a row. Started on an 8L which was bought already at stage 2 and was pretty fun. Then went to an 8P Sportback 2.0 tfsi s-line quattro and threw a stage 1 on. Then went to a TTS s-tronic and loved it but was just too impractical. So I've just bought a 2009 S3 with 40k on the clock.

I've got some plans for this so want to keep track of progress with this "build" thread. I've always wanted to do stuff to a car but have never got around to it or had the money.

Plans:
New wheels, H&R lowering springs, Milltek TBE (resonated), Revo ceramic intake, Autotech HPFP, DSG remap, stage 2+ map.

Here's the car when I bought it last week (excuse the crap photos):

As you can see, not great. The outside looked clean but the car is covered in swirl marks, nothing too bad but unfortunately the previous owner was a sponge monkey.

So a full degrease, de-tar and clay and already the car was looking better...

The weather turned and I had to call it a weekend.

Plans for when the weather gets better: machine polish and seal. Also will dress the engine bay and give the interior a good clean.

Time to break out the big guns...

Starting to tape up

Quite hard to see the swirls or even a before or after as the light was a little flat, I didn't have an inspection light and my phone is no match to my DSLR, but here's an idea of before and after...

DSC_0343.JPG

DSC_0344.JPG

To remove the swirls I used the DAS-6 Pro and orange 5@ Hex logic pad, about 5 passes using Megs Ultimate Compound. Then moved to Hex white pad and if I could be bothered (which I couldn't bar the roof and bonnet) moved to a black pad and added a layer of AG SRP. This wasn't really needed and by the end of the weekend I skipped this stage.

I then managed to get a quick coat of AG HD wax on which I'm quite impressed with.

(no wax on this shot)

DSC_0240.JPG

Also gave the inside a good clean which was Megs leather clean and treatment and the usual degreaser etc.

So it's pretty clean now.

Next weekend going to sort the windows out (polish, treat and seal) and give another coat of wax. I'll have some new wheels coming so will give them a few coats of wax (probably Collinite 476s).

Wheels ordered. I couldn't afford some decent forged Rays so have to settle for these for now.

(note the crap photoshop, not mine lol)

Think I'll get some red locking nuts. Not to eveyones tastes but it's my car so I don't care :D

Great progress, can't believe the state some people let their cars get to, especially if they are selling them.

I'm surprised the seller sold the car looking like this but you've done a great job so far. Keep up the good work it's looking good already

Cheers guys.

In their defence the car looked good from a "shut door" viewpoint and they didn't know they were doing anything wrong.

If I wasn't confident in the condition below all the crap I wouldn't have bought it but gave it a good inspection.

Car's booked in for a week tomorrow! Excited.

If you bought this car from Harrowgate then count yourself lucky because I missed out on it by 1 day... Only due to the geographic location I am in the country.. I was coming on the saturday to view it...

Theres nothing that wrong with it that cant be cleaned up... Great basis of a car and especially for the price that you got it for... I'd be a happy chappy if I were you, cos I was gutted that I missed it by 1 day!

Looks great that mate, cleaned up nice!

Agreed.

In it's "original" state,it makes mine look clean!

Where had the previous owner been keeping it?.....a forest somewhere?

Wheels arrived.

Massive thanks to the guys at 3SDM for helping out with right right fit and Dave from wheelbase helping out getting me the best deal and right fitment.

I didn't want to worry about modifying arches and as the car is my daily driver I needed a reliable, non rub solution.

I'm not going to put these on until the car goes in for its other work.

Nice to see something different to the usual rotors which are everywhere at the min.

What's the specs you got them in? And size tyres?

Also I hope you didn't get the staggered fitment ones.

Thanks mate. I really like the RS6 wheels but genuine ones are the wrong fit and cost too much.

I was tempted to go staggered for a deeper concave on the rear. I really like the concave look but know it's hard on the A3 without some effort.

In the end went with:

8.5X18 5/112 ET45 3SDM 0.01,
235/40/18 ZR VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA

Dave from wheelbase said their fitter recommend going 225 so that's what I went with. Flush valves.

nice one mate, i was going to say if they were staggered fitment then you'd want to send them back.

The haldex unit doesn't like staggered wheels very much.

They should fit fine on a 25mm drop, they'll look best with more of a drop though so id consider coilovers!

Regardless, look forward to seeing them on :icon thumright:

Yea cheers buddy I know some people think staggered will be ok with the different profile but I didn't want to risk it.

As I'm doing everything in one go I can't afford coilovers straight off but will no doubt look at them in a few months when the itch returns.

Then there's always a big brake kit, but not looked into that, might need bigger wheels which means would go forged and it starts getting expensive lol

Car goes in Tuesday for two days.

Hope to get it back Wednesday end of play. If the weathers good that weekend I'll take it to north wales and take the DSLR too.

Cheers guys.

I hope to finish off the bits I've missed and get another coat of wax on before she goes in for her goodies.

Proper excited, never had so much done to a car before, aways been a long ambition of mine and I feel if I don't get it done now I'll regret it. No regrets.

Well...car's gone into Unit 20.

A mix of excitement and worry. Just because it's a lot of money, more than I've spent on a car "tuning" and I know I won't get it back on resale. Also it's my daily driver and I have a long commute so I need to keep it reliable. I know "buy an oil burner golf etc" nah lol

Should have the car back end of play today. Great news, thought it would be a few days.

:D

Could you ask Unit 20 to put prices up on there web site please!

So annoying anything you click on it says send price enquiry

.

I use Unit20 for my upgrades and modifications. Very decent company, and knows his stuff.

Right so car....done!

Massive massive grins all around.

This is now seriously quick. Ended up with a stage 2 DSG map.

I'll post up some more when I get the time but for now....

Cheers buddy.

What a difference. Sound from the intake is nuts!

Initial Impressions

So initial impressions are awesome. The power is immense and the car pulls like a train right through the range right to the red (although it never feels like it needs to get near the red line to keep the power pushing you into your seat). I'll try to go through some of my observations/impressions.

Driving around "normally" is sweet. The resonated Milltek is perfect for me and my motorway commute. If this was purely a fun/weekend car then I would have gone non-resonated but I didn't want any drone. The intake makes a massive suck type sound on initial pull away and gives of just a hint of hiss as you make progress.

It's got a Stage 2 DGS Revo map on. I was a little concerned about some of the "features" of the stage 1/2 DSG maps. I stupidly thought the full manual override meant the car wouldn't auto shift down as coming to a stop or out of the useful power range. I was also a tad worried about the extra rev limit etc but all my fears are totally gone and unwarranted. The car feels so much more alive and responsive. I guess without the map on the box the extra power/torque from the map wouldn't be matched or even realised. If you've got an s-tronic and are getting a stage 2/2+ I'd highly recommend the stage 2 on the box too.

When you floor it....it fu@king goes!!! Put your foot down, even in "D", (when in drive the box shifts like lightening) there's a huge whoosh from the intake/exhaust etc that sounds like the cars swallowing more air than an industrial furnace needs. You get thrown back in the seat and stay there until you realise things are going past very, very quickly. I took it down an open stretch of road a few times when first picked the car up and the car gets to silly speeds very quickly. It's going to require some discipline to make sure I keep hold of my licence and life!

The intake makes an initial deeper noise on pulling off, but on application of the loud pedal it gives off some lovely chirps and even flutters every now and then. Best way I can describe it is like a pigeon being raped by a horny owl.

The car's also on 25mm H&R springs with ET45 8.5" wheels (225 rubber) and there's been no rub at all even with four old wheels and tyres in the boot. Not on full lock, not on speed bumps. I'd say the ride feels as comfy as before, I've not given it a run on some proper corners to evaluate any difference in grip etc. I'd say you can hear the dampers working a little more so maybe they're going to wear out and I'll be looking at some coilovers, but for now very happy and impressed.

Driving day to day not a lot has changed. Other than on standard roads it's very very easy to get to illegal speeds before you realise it (especially with the s-tronic). Pulling away from lights, even in "D" is so effortless and is accompanied by the initial intake noise (which some people might not like it's quite a solid whoosh, like a ton of water shooting down a pipe almost). I've pulled out of junctions a few times only to have to be careful not to go in the **** of the car that pulled out before me.

Motorway driving is just as civilised, if not more due to the quieter tyres. Although I think I can hear some sort of bearing/mechanical drive noise/drone/whine. I'm sure it's totally unrelated to work but I'll keep an ear on it. There's no drone from the exhaust at all. If anything it sounds the same as stock until you proper boot it. I'm very happy with the sound.

MPG seems to have dropped a couple of percent like for like driving on the motorway. Overall I'll get a lot less in the tank but only because it's so easy and fun to go fast.

Martin and the guys at Unit 20 were the perfectionists I've come to expect and love over the years. Their work has been flawless and I'm made up with the quality and levels of service I get from them. They checked the DSG map with Revo (they were expecting the stage 1 map but got the stage 2, we were happy to go with the stage 2 on Revo's recommendation). The only thing I'm annoyed at, which is nothing to do with Unit 20, is I had to put £15 of 95RON fuel in a few days before going in for the work. Even though the usual Nitro+ went in after Martin still had to ****** the timing a little bit. The good news is, I'll take it back in a few weeks and squeeze a little more out of her.

No dyno/charts to show.

Future work....maybe prostitution after the cost of all this ha.

I think bigger brakes would be good but I don't think I can get bigger discs in on the 18's so maybe some performance pads. Might look at some ARB/suspension work. The car's going in for a full Hunter alignment/tracking. Some final finishing touches (black or red wheel nuts/covers, maybe tint the rear lights a little etc).

If you're considering it....save up and go for it. The car is immense. I took a mate out in it, launch controlled (4000rpm) off some lights and he **** himself! Fun times.

I'll update in a week or so.

A question of taste but thought it might be nice to ask some opinions.

Silver/Black/Red?

I'm edging towards black after thinking red. Not silver. That red's probably too shiny bit of a PS fail.

Beautiful example you have here mate!

Love the wheels and I reckon the red wheel nuts look the best, tie in with the colour of the car

Great review of your recent work and glad your enjoyed your visit to Unit20. Sounds like you have a pretty decent car setup how you like it.
If you have a SPS switch you can change the timing and fuel settings yourself.

I've got an SPS switch, and whilst I think these are useful for switching settings if you can't get (( RON fuel or suchlike,I think that altering settings yourself can be a recipe for trouble, unless you're very sure about what you're doing.

I keep a couple of presets in the SPS and leave it at that.

I read this document before even using the SPS switch.

https://products.revotechnik.com/products/pdf/SelectPlus_AdvancedUserGuide_V0707.pdf

Just for reference Martin spoke to Revo when setting mine (Stage 2 using 99RON) to the following:
Boost 8, Timing 5, Fuel 9.

He asked me to come back to adjust the timing more accurately and do some VCDS logs, I just haven't had time yet,

I had a good read through that as well, before deciding that AMD had set my car up to get the best from it,and that I'd leave the fiddling around to them, but for those that can log a car,or know what they're up to,I can see it may be of use.

I think in fairness also that mine has got to the stage where we're pushing the software itself, and I'm best left out of that!

I'd be interested to see what other peoples SPS settings are for different stages of map and hardware spec.

I'll have to see what we've got on mine after the boost controller and timing/fuelling are set up.

Yea interesting guys I didn't want to bother or worry or mess with an SPS switch because I know the car's pretty tight on the tuning "tolerances" and didn't want a small change to cascade to a big impact. I had anSPS on my first 8l and tbh thought unless you knew what you were doing was more worry than it was worth.

I can see you're already enjoying what the car can do,and how much extra there is in it,once its been remapped.

Lovely car and great pics.

Thanks Alex, back at you....seriously impressed and somewhat inspired by your thread.

I'll try to get a proper photo shoot in soon, once cleaned up and in the right location with the right space and time.
