Asn New Mobile Look

Not a fan of the new tweeks, it's slower and more difficult.

It was perfect yesterday.

We've changed colours, fixed some [100%] behind the scenes stuff, and added some smilies - I can't see how any of that has made it slower? Could you explain more specifically?

Please could we have pasted links a different colour/font/itlaics ?

Links just look like normal text at the moment. Thanks.

The menu bar follows you around the screen (on mobile this is). As you scroll down it comes down with it giving you about 1 cm of space to read things on the page. We all know the menu is at the top so why does it have to follow me down the screen like a stupid advert making navigation a pain. Oh and the return to top button that floats in and out, why? I can return to the top by either scrolling up or tapping on the bar at the top of my screen instead of accidentally tapping on the stupid button and going all the way to the top again.

I'd prefer it back to how it was yesterday tbh but that's just me.

And I liked the previous header but that's just being picky.

@smurfworth The navigation bar is sticky on all platforms (certainly all compliant platforms, anyway). You say this results in you having about 1cm of reading space left on your mobile; what's the handset/browser? Any chance of a screen-grab?

I'm not being funny, but unless there's something wildly different on your mobile devices to the couple I've tried (and just tried again) on, your not liking the change to colours and font weight in the header are probably your least picky observation! ;)

The header navigation/menu is sticky because by definition, it provides a header with navigation for the site - being as we thought (and as far as our testing indicated), that it didn't eat-up too much screen real estate on any platform (I'm viewing in Firefox on a 13" laptop at the moment, and I wouldn't describe it as obtrusive; nor is it when I browse in the stock browser on a Galaxy S4 or tablet) - if there's an issue of it leaving such a small amount of space as you describe, we'll look at it again. Actually it was not-'sticky' for a while yesterday only while scripts were shuffled-around.

"why?" "stupid" button? You're sure these are the objective concerns? Why? Again, because we thought it was useful without much of an overhead - it fades in & out so it's there for those who want to use it, and for those who don't like looking at it, it disappears when the page settles. I'd perhaps have said we could look at hiding it for certain mobile devices, but since we're showing more posts per page now (as other requests), I can see how it might be handy. If you can demonstrate to me that it really is more trouble than it's worth, we'll look at that again too.

[For anyone reading who's noticed it] It has been pointed out that perhaps the behaviour of smilies in the reply box on mobile devices isn't ideal; I agree it might take some tweaking, so we'll have a look at that.

Cheers,

Rob.

Here's where the bar gets in the way, it's behaviour is random, sometimes it's in the way others it's not. Generally I see it as being a pain and slowing the browsing down compared to yesterday.

Another of the bar getting in the way.. When you've got a 3.5" screen and 0.5" is taken up by the bar you can't really see a great deal.

Is there any way of getting the full desktop website as I can't see myself getting on with this mobile site if I can only see half the pictures

*mutters something non-complimentary about iPhones*

Clearly, with the navigation bar floating neither here nor there (as in your first pic), it's not working on your device/browser as we intend. Now that we've seen it, we can work on it. I'd be grateful if you could fire me a link to the thread in your second pic so I can see what's happening with the image - I imagine it might be larger than what the site considers safe to dynamically shrink (i.e. it's huge), and as such is exception more than rule.

Again, you're browsing the full desktop site right there. The desktop and mobile sites are one and the same. It's 'responsive' - i.e. it will adjust its width according to screen size.

What flavour iPhone are you using (software too please)? - There's obviously some combination of factors (screen size/resolution, Apple's interpretation of standards) which means things are a bit tight in that case; as above, now we know, we can look at it - for the record, on a Galaxy S4 there's a decent amount of space to read, and the navigation bar doesn't stick when the reply box is in focus, which means there's plenty of space for it and the keyboard.

I think the new website looks great! Looks really modern compared to the last skin - appreciate everything you guys/girls do here, without this forum we wouldn't be talking now - owning an Audi wouldn't be the same without ASN!

Thanks for the feedback guys. :)

Does the quote system now work differently, as I seem to have to click quote then click reply?
I've just clicked reply in your post above, and it's automatically quoted you.

On another matter, the site is loading v e r y. S l o w l y for me tonight, iPad, iOS 7.1.2

Actually say down and figured it out, makes multi quite a lot better and reply is quote now.

It's your iPad 3rd gen mate, need a Air lol

The site still runs stupidly slow on my iPhone 4s with latest iOS update, triple posted last night as a result of the forum not actually posting my message after using the post reply button.

It was fine before you made the header move with the screen, now it just overloads my phone and crashes it.

I hate browsing on here on my phone now, it's a chore!

This going to the first page in a thread all the time is driving me mad. Yes I could click 'Go to First Unread' but that is not the same.... I want to go to the end of the list even if I've already read it.

I'm not sure that it's the header that's causing you the problem... we could try a test and turn it off and see...

If you could please, it's driving me nuts.

It still gets in the way like my previous screenshots too, what's worse is I don't even use the ****** thing.

It's like a scratch you can't get at

There is now an option in your setting to reverse the post order if you want....
Yes I've found that now and it seems to work on some threads and not others.
I know all the changes have been made to make it better for phone and tablet users, but like Windows 8 it seems to have forgotten than a lot of use still use 'real' computers. I have two tablets a 7" and a 10" but I would still much rather access this and a whole lot more using my desktop or 13" laptop.

Ok it's off for today..... let me know if out
makes a difference

Well I can safely say it makes posting 10 times faster and the bar doesn't get in the way.

Good job!

Now leave it alone :asskicking::arco:

And I now have the full 3.5" screen to browse on once again, it's nice to be able to see the forum again.

iPhone 5 here, iOS 7.1.2

Floating menu bar off has made for quicker loading, plus has really helped when replying to posts. Now you don't get menu bar and keyboard sandwiching a tiny portion of visible screen in which to compose reply. :)

Q for admins:
What happens to previously banned members? I see "Guest" attached to their username/profile now, is guest posting enabled?

Not a fan yet...
When posting a reply, have to srcoll to end (bottom) of page.
Signatures are not visible,so cant see peoples info when responding, car, age etc.

On a mobile I prefer not to see signatures as space is limited, you would have to scroll through the sig to see the posts

the site already supports:

mobile portrait = no sigs
mobile landscape = sigs viewable

simple, no arguments, choose your preferred viewing!

I did not know that,cheers

Just logged into the Desktop version on my Ipad and for some reason there is a mass of white space at the top of the forum before I get to the navigation bar where Home Button is above the ADI Advert.
Is this because it is an image or advert that has not loaded? I cannot load a screenshot as I don't use my PC do to it being too slow and I shouldn't be on the forum at work, which would also mean waiting to check on Monday!
I'm not keen on the mobile version of forums as I bought the Ipad for the bigger screen, so I don't want to use a basic trimmed down site for mobiles when I don't have to. Thus, I don't want to struggle using the full version on my mobile either!
