So I'm thinking of getting a hybrid turbo in my 2.0 TDi but I have some questions I need answers for...

For those of you that have gone down the hybrid route who did you use to get the custom remap to suit the hybrid?

how much horsepower and torque did you end up with?

was there any lag before the turbo kicked in after the remap?

should I be expecting more smoke from the engine on load? If so how much?

Just want to make sure I get a nice experience after doing the install.

thanks guys

I can't answer any of the other questions and I don't have a hybrid but I would imagine a custom remap would be the only way to suit the new turbo.

Also What 2.0TDi engine do you have? It might be useful for someone to know where you're starting from...

I think 2.0TDi hybrid is between 220-240 with custom map.

Best bet to do is get bigger turbo and new mani, obviously with this you wil get increased lag but when on full boost will be mega!

Smoke tends to depend upon the map, i would also budget in a clutch and fly wheel.

guys i appreciate the advice on parts but I'm looking for experienced users of Hybrids... i need to know very specific things about it like the lag and smoke... who people recommend for remaps for these turbos, and not just general recommendations. I want someone who has experience with it!

Hi Ash, I ran a stage 2 Turbo Dynamics with a Milltek downpipe and full system on a PD 150 Golf.

It was custom mapped by Star Performance in Kirkcaldy and smoke levels were on a par with a std car.

The spool was excellent and there was power from as low as 1200 rpm. From memory peak boost was about 1.9 bar and it was putting out 190 bhp and 290 lbs/ft. I still have the dyno plot somewhere and can dig it out if you wish.

I had an uprated Sachs clutch kit but didn't need a new DMF.

If I was going down that road again I would go with TD or if I had the cash, a GTB.

I have turbo dynamics stage 3 hybrid just had it mapped yesterday with egr delete and maf delete unknown power at the moment need new clutch so it can be mapped for strongwr clutch hoping to make 240bhp woth a nice safe map, did run 1.7bar at 355ft lb 230bhp but clutch slipping, map was boosted yesterday with pop corn limiter at 4500 rpm and 1.8bar feel noticably faster cant dyno until clutch is done

My opinion of Required items for hybrid to make decent power and to help engine -

Egr delete useful but optional

Maf delete optional

Silicone hoses good but optional

S3 intercooler way better than stock but optional

Decat turbo back exhaust decent size (milltek) required

Clutch required when yours starts slipping

Panel filter or decent intake is always good

Also i have all the above i listed think my turbo is at its limit of 240bhp not sure if bosio 1287+ injectors will make a difference any help with that would be appreciated

Also forgot black smoke will come out of your car if you want to run that sort of power

Image

Car topped out at 143mph ish wouldn't push anymore was seriously on private grounds on a private runway with rolling start ofcourse its a diesel not a supercar took a while to get to that speed lol

250bhp was false reading on dyno my friend said i just havent had time to change sig

Wow the back of your car is dirty!

So when you say expect smoke... exactly how much? also isn't this something that would get the police attention?

The lag and smoke is whats putting me off... although i hear that some guys don't have smoke and others do??

It topped out at 143?

My mate used to have an mk4 anni with a old allard hybrid and I managed 156, that got the fairly quicksilver for the type of car.

I have a gt tdi 130 polo now as a run around and have started to do stuff on that, give us a call ash and il explain :)

Trups

Old remap 143mph also had 20" s8 wheels on so 18" with new remap will get more top end 👍

Also police wont say anything they dont know much about cars tbh lol also lag what lag ? Hybris is 100000000 times better than a stock turbo with remap mate as soon as you drive it will feel better well after its mapped for hybrid turbo as on stock map the ****** turbo will have huge lag lol

I thought you get more top end with bigger wheels and quicker off the mark with smaller rims?

Ash, under serious load a stock turbo with a strenuous map will smoke pretty bad

If you get the turbo hybrided right with a decent map to suit realistically you wouldn't need any other add ons, if you go for a conservative power gain you'll notice a bit of smoke when pushing hard but nothing major!

I've had mine done and the guy who converted the turbo did the map too, I doubt you'd travel to NI for the work so have no recommendations in that respect, I drive very hard most of the time and my rear end only gets dirty when its wet and muddy out, you may notice a little more soot when cleaning but barely!

I think black cars suit tdi's well as any other colour thats been mapped gets a stinking back end where the exhaust is!!

If you're not looking for balls to the walls power then go for 210-220bhp and you shouldn't see much smoke, this will net you around 310-320lb/ft so be wary of the clutch if its stock and/or high mileage

Hope that helps a little

Why start tuning and then not get full performance from the mods, if you can have 4 free apples why only take one be a greedy barrrrrstard lol

In theory thats all well and good, but once you get too greedy it will bite you in the ***

Once you get to a certain figure you're starting to affect the other components of the car, if Ash wants a bit more power whilst not wanting to pay serious cash then a conservative hybrid is a good choice

Going all out will eventually strain other components that have a lesser limit than the new turbo

I.e.

Injectors on these cars are only rated for 220-230ish, buying 4 new high flow injectors £1000 give or take
Higher flow fuelpump to keep up with new injectors £500est
Clutch flywheel £1000est
Boost hoses £400 est

and I'm sure theres more

I went for a hybrid as my clutch and flywheel were knackered so went with an upgraded set, then thought I'd get a hybrid.

I then had to get a hard pipe kit to contain the boost as my silicone hoses kept blowing off and apart.

Its a vicious cycle that has to be looked at in each persons own best interest

If i wa in his shoes id do as i have said but not everyone is the same upto him end of the day, trust me you will never be happy lol

How we getting on with this Ash?

I see youv sold the turbo so must have hybrid in? :detective2:

I'm also interested in this, keen to see the outcome and which turbo he went with...

Ok so i got it all sorted...

So firstly it turns out i had a failed injector, got a brand new one for £225 which is really good price considering that recon ones are over £300.

A few months back i had replaced the clutch and flywheel with a dark side developments stage 1 kit so i knew that the car would be ready for the hybrid. I went for the Turbo Technics Hybrid turbo although after buying it i was told i should have gone for the Turbo Dynamics one but i don't mind as it won't 'Rag' my car and i do still need to be a bit careful as being that my car is (wait your going to love this....) over 200k milage!

We got the car on the dyno as it was (failed injector included) and it was pushing 127bhp with 265ft-lb torque which to be fair for a 9 year old car with 1 dead injector isn't bad.

While the car was in at the tuners i had the hybrid turbo installed, EGR delete, intake flap delete, decat and the custom remap...

this was the result:

220bhp with 377ft-lb torque. The car felt amazing and so much quicker but there was way too much smoke coming from the car... was actually letting out clouds of black smoke when i would floor the pedal. So i took it back and had it retuned... also turns out the clutch and flywheel kit is good for 350ft-lb torque so that needed to be turned down.

I am still waiting on the final graph for the current power so i cannot say what it officially is but its still a damn sight faster than 127BHP and sounds good too... not to mention the 2 Audi TTS' that i went for a drive with that were having difficulty catching up to me after i drove away from them (no we weren't racing :ninja: i was already ahead of them (rolling start) and we all put our foot down and i managed to keep them behind me)

Great right up Ash, should of updated ya injectors in sure darkside do larger nozzles for about 600£

200K wowzers now that is some mileage!

How much did it all set you back m8, not including the injector cost and what company?

Jonny

Yeah its £700 more but that means the engine would be pushing more than 250bhp so i would then need other engine bits to get the car there... its just too much overall and then id be on that slippery slope of constantly changing parts to get it faster/keep it running.
i wanted a good strong car that has power but not too much that i would be wasting money... so far this is good.

in total without the injector included i have spent around £1500

Good results! Which hybrid did you go for? Looking into this for my BKD as i too want reliability and a nice power increase.

Ash, where did you get the work done? Wouldn't mind getting similar done to mine.
Did that price include the turbo and clutch kit?

Darkside fitted me a new engine, one of their hybrids, upgraded clutch, egr delete, alloy boost pipes, S3 intercooler and a custom remap, 40mph - 70mph it only just pulls away from my brothers A5 3.0tdi. He said that theres a bit of smoke out the back and I can see it at night time in other cars headlights in the rear view mirror, but no residue on the back. I had a race in Germany with a porsche cayenne S up t0 145mph and there was nothing in it. I love it, done 37,000 miles since its done and i'm still not bored. There is a bit of Lag up to 2000 then the power curve builds up, drops off and then really picks up at 3000rpm

Niceeee increase 👍

No the price didn't include the clutch, but it does include the turbo. the clutch is about another £1k fitted.

I got the work done at Dyno performance services: Dyno Performance Services LTD

They are based just by Brent Cross in North London... top guys! Ask for Jabran and say i sent you.

Nice! And what kinda of numbers we talking about, bhp/torque and price?

clutch kit only takes 350 ft lb that's a shame thought it would take more than that getting mine remapped soon sachs clutch takes over 400 ft lbs

I haven't got any figures, Darkside didn't put it on their rolling road. They took it out on the tarmac. As for the cost...... Well.... its complicated. My original turbo on 100k (AMD remap) snapped clean in half..

Sending bits through the engine. I was up Col de La Bonnette at the time, 2862m altitude, down on the south coast of france. breakdown recovery got it to darkside, Someone in between me, the french recovery man, the english recovery man and Darkside, the poor girl was started up making it a confirmed engine replacement. I tried to argue it and get to the bottom of it but nothing. Engine out of an '08 A3 with 42k, hybrid turbo, clutch, egr delete, custom remap, then back a year later for alloy pipes, S3 intercooler and another remap. Bearing a lot of labour for diagnostics, £4,000.... spent so far. I could afford it at the time so no regrets. Ive got an awesome sleeper that still does 600 to a tank! if I'm sensible

Ash, hows the car running? What model is your turbo?

In the process of buying a house, so the turbo upgrade is on the back burner until next year :(
