Alright people, i'm fed up with constant "what oil" threads, so here's the list. If anyone posts an "What oil for S3" or whatever thread then they can be directed here.

ROAD oil is the recommended oil as stated in the service book. TRACK is the oil of choice if you are 100% throttle on a track all day. TRACK is not "fast road", it's track. Not all engines will have this noted.

If you KNOW the oil for your engine, or if the information here isn't right, note it in a reply and i'll update the top thread. Oil shouldn't be hard people!

S3/2.0TFSI/BWA/CDLA/CCZA/etc
ROAD/Normal conditions: 5W30 504/507 Specification - Brand is your choice. Some say it matters, others not. If it meets the spec though, it meets the spec.
TRACK: 5w/40 at a push if you are running really hot all day
SOURCE: mjr901 and his infinate patience responding to every S3 oil thread.

You'll be hard pushed to find any of our cars in the 8P range that don't take 5w30 504.00/507.00.

It suits the whole range and is the staple diet for them all.

I'll have a butchers, either way, better to be explicit I think

2.0 TDI BKD runs perfectly under normal conditions (weather from -20 degrees Celsius up to 45 degrees Celsius) with Castrol 5W40.

Is that what the Manual/service book for the car says?

Just done my 04 2.0 TDI BKD 140. Went to Audi and brought 5w30 long life oil as recommended by them.

Initially for BKD was used 5W40. In the last few years they've switched to 5W30. I'm still using Castrol Edge 5W40, the same oil that was in the car when it exit the factory.

Once the list is complete you should add a link to this thread in the FAQs thread, thats' what it's there for.

Can't work out how to edit the first post, should it be editable? I thought they were editable forever, hence the placeholders ... maybe i'm being thick.

As it's a sticky you can't edit it unfortunately.

You can add them as a post and one of us mods will edit your post.

I was just about to buy a top up for my 2.0 tdi 140bhp. Maybe a silly question but since I am not sure what was put in on my last service, should I just stick to either the 5w30 or 5w40 to be safe?

Also doing high motorway mileage, is it worth paying the extra for Castrol?

Many Thanks

For the 3.2 I use Castrol Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W30

I would go with 5W40 Castrol to be safe.

http://www.123spareparts.co.uk/engine-oils/Castrol/EDGE-Professional-Longlife-3-5W-30/p-OIL-239 this is the stuff audi use for their services, and dirt cheap too. It's basically the same as the castrol FST but with a dye that shows up under UV light.

5w30 for bkd is only for long life service intervals every 30000km. For fixed service intervals every 15000lm the oil to use is 5w40 that meets 505.01 VW norm. Cheers

My car oil light came on recently, at Trago Mills of all places and they only had Castrol Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W40. I think I am supposed to use Castrol Edge FST Fully Synthetic 5W30. Is there likely to be any damage caused? I do drive my car pretty hard AND it has been 20+ deg C lately...

Question, how much oil does a BWA hold?

...last year audi used Shell 5w30 on mine, this year they have switched to Shell professional 0w30 they told me that is the new high performance engine oil they use...just a little info...

This is true.

Hi

Is the 0w30 suitable for the 2.0tdi 170? Also will it cause issues if I top up with 5w30 if Audi have used 0w30 as I don't know what they used.

Also my wife has the 1.2 Tfsi what oil will her car need?

0w30 seems odd to me for a 2.0 tdi. I am using 5w40 since my car is mapped, I would use 5w30 if it weren't.

Which 5W40 ?

Such misconceptions with oil , people don't realise there are thick and thin 30's and 40's due to about a 4 unit range allowed to designate a grade .

Which often means in the VAG world and VW oil specs that the difference is just 1 negligible unit and if the grade goal posts were moved by that 1 unit a 30 and 40 grade would come under 1 grade .

Also the LongLife oil by its very definition has to be a higher quality oil to keep it's properties for longer .

I have been using Castrol Edge 5W40 so far and I like it due to the fact that my turbo still didn't pop. :)

Absolutely what I was talking about above.

Quantum Platinum and Castrol Edge 502.00 505.01 5W40 is a THIN 40 grade .

Quantum LongLife III and Castrol Edge
504.00 507.00 5W30 is a THICK 30 grade .

So just 1 negligible unit of viscosity difference @ 100º C , at 40°C there are 5 units difference and that's were the 5W30 scores it's better flow for a cold start and better fuel economy during warm up .

As to which is best in terms of quality for wear etc .

After reading through this im still non the wiser, what would you recommend for my 140 pd 2.0 tdi? Its not mapped. Im happy to shell out as im hoping to get it to 200k or more miles!

I have a 2006 s3 8p bhz engine have been useing 5w30 but have now tuned it to stage 2+ 373bhp 393lbs foot so pole are suggesting 5w40 for tuned engines is this right help need cheers

Interestingly I run 15W/50 Fuchs in the race car.

For a daily driver it makes no difference if you're running 5W/30 or 5W/40. If you're going to track and realy RAG it all day then yes I would go higher on the vis to maybe 10W / 40 or even 10W / 50

I prefer the 50 as my engine bay temps get so high. The Winter viscosity is irrelevant for me to be honest.
