Vorsprung Durch Technik. Although I prefer Vino da Tavola!

That sentence makes even less sense to me now!

When I googled it nothing closely resembling that appeared! Maybe if I'd googled the .de site I may have had more luck.

The Golf R and the RSQ3 both came out of that test looking very good, both managed the 0-60 sprint in 4.5s, the A45 AMG took 4.6. 4.5s with 300bhp is highly impressive, S-tronic makes a huge difference. In terms of track times the Cupra 280 (ok lightened with bigger wheels, MP cup tyres) was 10s faster than the A45 around the ring - it's at least a £10k cheaper car so that is impressive.

Sadly, because I enjoyed owning a few Subaru's the Golf R/S3 make the new WRX STi look like a relic from the land time forgot, 5.2s to 60, mid 20s mpg, high tax band, can't see many choosing one over a Golf, S3 or Leon. If the rumoured track spec Golf R is on the way I will be interested.

Seemed odd to include a Q3 in the test rather than the more obvious competitor! (S3)

Probably because it was an RS Q3 which is a bit more powerful and faster than an S3 and therefore closer in performance terms to the Golf R although quite a lot more expensive.

I thought the test was very good, I suppose choice of S3 or R very much a personal thing. There's a lot to be said for either car.

That makes no sense Dave Q3 is an SUV/yummy persons school run market. I can't see anyone debating 'do I have a Golf R or a Q3RS????

In performance terms the S3 is closer to the R...and actually faster.

According the the Auto Express test the 0-62 time for the RS Q3 is 4.5 secs. According to the current Audi Pricing and Specification Guide the figures for the 0-62 for the S3 are 5.3 secs for the manual and 4.9 secs for the s-tronic.

I agree the RS Q3 is not really aimed at the same market as the other two cars in the test, the Mercedes AMG 45 or the Golf R DSG. But having said that your should see some of the 'SUV/yummy persons school run vehicles' that drop the kids off at the primary school just down the road from where I live. At a guess Dad has a company car and these are the 'week-end cars' that Mum using for the school run.

Not sure if they are selling that well. I've seen every dealer locally to me (south west) on my travellers has one in their show room. Swindon have had their RS Q3 for 3 months now in red. Still not sold. Most have been a blue colour (looks like Estroil).

At £43,000 for what is basically an SUV version of the A3 I'm not really surprised.

There is a glut of stock. When I looked with the wife at either one of these or an S3 I thought it was over priced and poor spec so it was quickly discounted. Salesman did say he could get us one fairly quickly as there was a fair bit of stock around. Think there was £4k off one with out much haggling which still by the time I added some essential options it was way over £40k.

It's not that much bigger than an A3/S3 inside either! Niche too far I think.

I don't think the Q3 has been a huge success as it is a bit small for an SUV, I would have thought if you needed a larger car for your dogging/fishing/twitching (delete as appropriate) an A4/6 Avant or Q5 would have been a better option. However there are always those who want to be 'on trend' !

4.8s for S3 with correct amount of doors the exact same as quoted for the Golf R which has just been tested at 4.5s by auto express, so you would expect S3 to produce slightly better than quoted also would you not?

Absolutely and way quicker than a Diesel 184 ;-)

Golf R and S3 are same power (and engine), but the S3 is 80 kg lighter. I'd expect the S3 to be slightly faster if anything.

They need to be... got to get to the next petrol station quickly - before the petrol runs out.... :nyah:

Actually not that bad on economy Arad.. Not the 40+ from a Diseasel but 35 is easily attained driving at Diesel speeds. Average from new 2200 miles is now 30.7. Could do with a larger fuel tank though IMHO.

This is just like playing grandad phrases bingo.

How many more inappropriate generalisations can we get in before the end of this thread, I wonder.

Are you stalking me again Mr 8.. Aren't most things in life generalisations. I think you will find most of my posts have an element of truth in them albeit often tongue in cheak! Chill.....

Stalking? Don't flatter yourself :)

There are other subscribers to this forum, apart from your blinkered self (in the sense that you can never appear to accept there are other valid views) and your ego.

An element of truth? Maybe, but a true gentlemen would never think about even pointing out the obvious in many cases. Certainly not in polite company. Or perhaps you're just attention seeking? We may never know :)

:lmfao:

I always think behaviour on the forum should be the same as if you were in person at the pub, cafe, meeting and people were discussing topics.Using tongue in cheak ? or generalisation as a reason behind your comment would wash a few times but constantly doing it would result in ejection from the pub, cafe, meeting.
Anyone agree ?

Oh and in other news it looks like we may be on the verge of ww3

What we know to be true, and what we perceive to be true can be two very different things.

As it's Easter Bank Holiday weekend I'm feeling charitable, and in response to this I'm going to offer a generous present (pulls the curtain back)....

An instantaneous permanent ban for the next post I deem to be slandering, digging or being outdatedly inappropriate. Anyone can feel free to grass up anyone they see doing it as my eyes can't be everywhere as I'm on holiday. Don't say I don't spoil you all. The clock starts ticking NOW!

Back on topic (not quite sure what the last few posts were about..) have you seen this video chaps? That is quite a victory for the Leon Cupra, it would certainly be my choice based on that. Add a set of Michelin Pilot Cup tyres and upgrade the brakes and you'd have quite an accomplished stealthy everyday road car and occasional track toy.

Not sure I'd base my buying of a road car on their performance on a track. Also the 4wd on the golf (or S3) will improve its handling a lot in the damp and wet compared to the FWD seat.

Fair point, I think he said as much in the review - Golf for the road, SEAT for the track, I quite like the track (see my YouTube) so for me the SEAT, Golf R or S3 for pure road use sure. I'm not in the market for either but I think they both look lovely cars for the money.

Yep - that's great it won a video battle.

At end of the day you still would have to endure the slight embarrassment of saying you own a Seat version of the Golf GTI PP, oh but with a bit more power and is actually as quick as an S3. My mate had a Cupra few years back and he got sick of explaining what it was and people saying "why didn't you get a Golf?". I doubt you will see many actually on the road.

Will always be the poor mans GTI.....

Diesel speeds? What are they? There are definitely 2 ways to look at this... I have a DTUK box which supposedly gives 235 bhp, and sub 6 second 0-62. I get 45 to the gallon from it and I floor it so I could probably get more if I were more careful :). Given I'm 7 weeks in and have done 2000 miles, I reckon that's "saved" me £120+ in fuel costs already. Now you have to ask yourself if £1000 per year in fuel costs is worth the extra performance. I'm in the fortunate position that I could have afforded a well spec'd S3 if I'd wanted it, and I could afford to fuel it.... But I don't think the extra performance justifies the extra cost - to me.

Fundamentally, with the latest crop of diesels, you get 80% the performance at 60% of the cost - and that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. So much so I'm thinking a bi-tdi A6/A7 may be on the cards...

Please don't turn this into another tedious diesel vs petrol thread. :/

Please don't tell me what to do... :/ but I've said my piece... :)

I was asking not telling. But either way we've all heard the "diesels are slow and boring" vs "my diesel did 3537 miles on a thimble of fuel and burned off a ferrari" debate far too many times.

I tend not to think about my S3 costs like this. I tend to look at the positives of the increased new technology which means that for the same mpg figure (ie c.30-32mpg) I get about 100 more HP than a few years ago. Our mk5 GTI does similar mpg and is 200 hp, our 3.0i Z4 is 231 hp and does similar mpg.

My monthly car running costs are affordable for me so it's all about maximising what I can get for my budget and what meets our needs.

I've previously owned an early e46 330d auto, that also did c.30mpg.

For me, 30mpg is in the "don't worry about fuel" bracket, as soon as it goes below that into 20, 25 etc I start to worry and not drive as much.

I'd agree 100% with this - whether this leads you down the S3 route or not doesn't matter - as long as what you end up with meets your needs - which for me are dominated by my 60 mile/day commute. If I were doing 20-30 miles per day, I'd probably own an S3 :)

Come on guys, lighten up.

It's all about personal choice, it's a good job we don't all think the same way isn't it?
If what ever you pick to spend your money on suits you then no one's wrong. Lets appreciate and respect the other persons views.

The R with those wheels and in that colour does look very nice in the video. Still think the GTI has the edge on overall looks.

Saw my second R today and was the second time I was completely underwhelmed by it.
The S3 isn't exactly exciting to look at but it's far less bland than the R.
