I had a run over to Santa Pod yesterday for a RWYB event.

Apart from a having a day out mucking about with cars, I wanted to get some figures for my S3 after my not inconsiderable warranty work from a few weeks ago (turbo, fuel pump, cat etc). The work was done at 1300 miles and I have now covered over 3000.

My standard car run consistently 12.9 secs for the QTR mile, with a max speed of 106.3 mph. This was using launch with the gearbox in S mode. Does anyone else have a comparison to share?

I am not sure what my expectations were, just looking to reassure myself that I have a healthy car. I have read of others recording 0-100 times of 11 secs and I have to say mine does not feel THAT quick - although clearly, that is subjective.

I last visited Santa Pod over ten years ago with a Mk1 Focus RS. That ran 14.9 secs / 94 mph......

Cheers

I posted the EVO magazine November 13 group test results a few months ago on S3 thread....see below, think your S3 is doing the right sort of figures considering EVO tested a manual.

S3 manual SB
0-30 in 1.8 seconds
0-60 in 5.4 seconds
0-100 in 12.5 seconds
1/4 mile in 13.7 seconds

Merc A45 AMG
0-30 in 1.7 seconds
0-60 in 4.3 seconds
0-100 in 10.6 seconds
1/4 mile in 12.8 seconds.

Golf GTI performance pack DSG
0-30 in 2.8 seconds
0-60 in 6.2 seconds
0-100 in 14.7 seconds
1/4 mile in 14.8 seconds.

There was also figures for Megane 265 Cup and Focus ST. Both slower than the Germans. I would have loved to have seen what an S-Tronic S3 would do as think it would not be too far behind the Merc. The Merc's times were achieved with its launch control function and the writer also suggests the GTI's times were done the same way.

The EVO times were done with a race logic box or whatever you call it so should be fairly spot on.

Guess circa 1 second between S-Tronic and manual allowing for LC / shift times is reasonable ?

Comparing the figures from vid and your posted figures from EVO would suggest that 12.9secs for 1/4 seems about right

Interesting how the launch control only made 0.1 of a difference 0-30mph between the a45 and the s3 surely that's where it's most noticeable.

Does the S3 make 30 in 1st gear Rams? That could be why so close, no gear change so not dependant on how good/bad the driver was?

Wouldn't expect launch control to make much difference really, the main advantage the A45 has there is the fast gear changes with an auto box.

Surely the getaway is much quicker with launch control, perfect rpm, perfect traction and no bogging down. Maybe only worth 0.1 of a second but I'd of though it would of made more of a difference.

A45 is 7 speed so might not quite touch 30 in first?...

Your bang on the money with that time if you ask me.

My mate in his golf mk7 R posted exactly the same time aswell.

Im off up to York raceway at easter aswell so ill let you know how I get on.

Thanks all for the input - looks like my car is there or thereabouts.

Autocar actually have a Golf R road test feature this week so that will be another benchmark....

So Autocar timed the MK7 Golf R at 13.4 secs for the standing quarter mile. This was on a wet track (MIRA) although given the 0-60 time was quoted as 4.8 secs, it doesnt look to have made much difference!

In any case, I am less worried about my cars performance than I was

What's the procure for launch control? How many times you done it?

Consistent 12.9 times today with terminal speeds between 105 and 106.4. Best run was 12.8 This car is impressive.

A pic of my beauties, the black one is bit quicker. :)

12.8/12.9 for a standard car straight out the factory is ****** good, I remember been chuffed at a 12.8 in a stripped out 1080kg 300hp turbo corsa so for that in a much heavier car is brilliant

I kinda expected it, based on car magazine times, but it's still brilliant. It's all about the launch control, I tried it once without it, launching just off idle: car made a 13.6@101 mph. Of course you can flash it on launch a bit, so I would expect a 13.2-13.3@104-105 without launch control at best. With my Vette I can consistently run 11.9-12.0@126 mph on an unprepped track (like on the street), but to the 330 ft mark (that's about 0-105-115 km/h) both cars run the same time. Of course, it's different when using slicks on the Vette, but you would never want to do that in street traffic :busted_cop: I had a 13.1 timeslip too once with launch control, that time the car just bogged after launch, a hard launch then about 0.1s later a big bog, then launch again. Did someone experience something like that?
