8P Gloss Black Optics B-Pillar Trim w/Pictures

Hi guys and gals,

Just thought I'd post a few pics of the OEM Audi gloss black / Black Optics B-pillar trims fitted. When I was scouring posts here before looking for info, I never actually found any pictures - so thought I'd share.

They look ****** fantastic, so much better than the faded, dull-matt finish on the old ones. I'm very happy. As is the wife (it's her car).

I gave them a couple coats of collinite before fitting, and cracked on. Very easy, all you need is a 3mm drill bit to drill the old rivets out. Simple as that.

The parts from Audi cost just under a hundred quid including the rivets. Part numbers can be got from the invoice below. I was expecting the rivets to have black heads as per the OEM rivets on the car, so paid the frankly outrageous price of £1.25 each for the Audi ones. However, on arrival they turned out to be were standard silver anyway... Lol.

I bought them on Monday, £43.20 inc.VAT. I did get a small discount, but not much.

'Wheel C' is for a centre cap, one was slightly damaged and I've just had all four wheels refurbed along with my M3s spare 18s.

that's something i'm looking to do. i don't like matte black pillars. also i think it should go perfect with rear tints..

I vinyl wrapped mine with a gloss black vinyl. Very effective result. Not quite as glossy as the real thing but a load cheaper.

i was going to order the 3m stuff on ebay and wrap mine as £40+ is a bit steep my MKII Seat FR's were half the price

I polished mine and was really happy with the results if people want to try save the pennys etc...........

I was thinking about wrapping/spraying, but I didn't think £95 all-in was too bad for genuine parts.

I am going to put my old ones on eBay later this week. If anybody wants to try and DIY wrap or spray them: £25 delivered.

I totally agree and had I known I would of just bought them LOL!!

How do they come off? Mine are starting to peel on one side where the top of the the door trim has rubbed away the coating. Thanks.

You have to drill the rivets out.

I went with black vinyl on my tdi, if i was to relace these on the s3 i would go with carbon ones

Did those parts arrive painted gloss black? It looks from the photos like they are. If so, I guess that would be the basic 'Brilliant Black' colour?

I'm getting some resistance from parts departments. Is that normal? They only seem to want to supply the exact replacement parts.

Tell them to shut up (or more politely if they haven't managed to completely p!ss you off with their attitude) and order this exact part number, some parts dept staff think they're the parts hitler. My local isn't bad on ordering the part nos I request but they flat out will not have that you can retro fit stuff and that I'm wasting my money as this part categorically will not work (lol)

Yes! that's exactly the response I got. I suppose I can see their point of view to some extent, in that they don't want people just buying (and returning) parts just to see if they will fit.

The parts have arrived. About £100 spent so far. They look to be exact fit replacements for the existing ones, despite dire warnings from the parts department to the contrary.

I haven't got them fitted yet as I'll be needing a rivet gun and possibly some aluminium/stainless steel rivets.

I can't see a way to pull out the door rubber to get a clear shot with the drill, so I may put in a flat piece of plastic or something to keep the rubber away from the drill bit.

I've assumed that some part of the old rivet in each case will drop inside the bodywork of the car. That won't be a problem will it?

(This is about as heavy duty modifying as I've ever done before!)

To be fair, I had a somewhat pared down version of that message...

"Part numbers I have given are listed to your car chassis number. The other part numbers are excluded from your chassis range , This would either indicate that they will not fit or differ in some way. There is no way we can confirm that it is just a colour difference . Parts catalogue suggests correct part numbers are the ones I have quoted you on ."

It seems like a standard response for 'part rebels'.

Sorry for late replies, dont get on very often.

Damon - Glad the dealers sorted you the parts eventually! I just got the parts numbers and ordered them, they didnt question it. Your parts guy does sound like a bit of a Hitler!

As for the rubber seals, I simply just pulled them tight and folded them away with one hand, drilling with the other - its not as hard as it sounds. You can go in at a slight angle to further increase the distance between the drill bit and the rubber. I didnt snag it once.

Some of the rivets came out completely, some did drop inside - its no problem and I've certainly heard no rattles!

As for the rivets, get ali or stainless, either will be fine. And dont be afraid to just get stuck in - there is not a lot that can go wrong!

Finally got mine fitted and look awesome. The drivers side one had just started to peel back too, so it was just in time.

One of mine is a bit scratched so was wondering what to do with it. Might have a go at polishing them first and replacing with the optics if it still doesn't look great.

In terms of attaching the new ones on with the rivets am I right in assuming you'll need a rivet gun to do this? Is it relatively straight forwards?

Yes, it's fairly straightforward (he says having not actually done it himself, but having watched it done ).

The rivets are hidden behind the weather stripping and some trim tool is required to keep the rubber out of the way whilst drilling out the existing rivets (3 per side). With rivets removed, the plate should slide towards the front of the car to be removed. Some wiggling may be required as they can be quite a snug fit.

Then you'll need a pop rivet gun and some correct size rivets (no idea, sorry). Happily, we had some black rivets which kept the finished look tidy (albeit, mostly behind the weather strip).

Just a quick note: If/when you order your trims, check them thoroughly right there and then when picking them up. One of mine had a tiny fisheye dent and a few scratches that weren't put there by installation. Since I only discovered this weeks after ordering them, there wasn't much I could do about it as they had been knocking around the boot waiting to be fitted. Luckily, the scratches aren't visible when the door is closed, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over them.

Just had a look on youtube at pop riveting and looks fairly straight forwards!

Might give this one a go if I can sort out my other optics bits

Am I right in thinking there are pre drilled holes on the pillar covers?

No worries. Yeah, each one has three, recessed sections with the holes pre drilled. just pop in the rivet and fix it in. Probably best to cover the area in a couple or three layers of masking tape as the rivet gun could bounce when it 'pops' and cause a nasty scrape on the finish.
As advised earlier in the thread, may be best to avoid the bog-standard steel rivets in favour of aluminium or stainless. I'm not sure what type went in on mine though to be fair.

If you take your ones off give them a little rub with sandpaper then spray paint them gloss black and lacquer them and put back on simples and only a cpl off tins off rattles

I'd be a lot happier buying gloss black parts off audi who i can complain to if the finish isn't perfect.

Anyone confirm them part numbers will indeed get me the gloss black ones not the pre-facelift rubbish?
