Anybody tried these number plate lights?

Hej Drew, I have not but I understand these ones are very good. There are quite a few Forum members who have installed these with no issues. You can also purchase similar as well as cracking, H7's bright white headlamp bulbs and led sight lamps from Forum sponsor Tr8ups too.

I brought new genuine lenses from my mate who works at audi and brought these

That way its cheaper to buy and replace them - make sure you change the screw that comes with the new lenses ... They round off
 
Of course you can use the old lenses - if you can get them out in one bit. You can carefully drill the screw head off if it rounds off

I had these on the audi, sadly mine wernt a perfect fit... I had to file down one of the lugs slightly.
One outlasted the other due to moisture getting in. Other than that they are really good.

on the other hand... Try cleaning your number plate lenses, I had to buy some new from audi (goodbye £24) but made a huge difference having clean covers with a cheapish LED bulb... looks the same to be honest and would have cost nearly £20 less if I didn't have to buy the lenses again!
 
I bought some for mine from there shop in Bradford, worked fine for 6 weeks then started kicking errors up randomly on the dash, when I opened and closed the boot it would stop the error for a bit so went back to them saying there faulty and must have a dry solder joint, he fobbed me off saying it must be a fault with the car !!
So I stripped the led lights down to find one of the resistors wasn't even soldered to the circuit board and very poor soldering on the rest !! I'm going to put a resister in the tailgate to stop anymore errors.
 
Jimbo are you talking about rear lights or number plate lights
 
Surely wouldn't work altogether if it was a dry joint as its not completing the circuit?
If it was an SMT part which I think it is, that would be down to the solder paste printer they were using, either not enough paste, stencil wasn't cleaned or its been wiped off by fingers.

Looks like they overheated!

There doesn't seem to be much space between any of the components either ?!
 
The other one was the same, poorly soldered in resistors and obvious signs of overheat.
I'll never have anymore problems now though as I've put a resistor in the tailgate and soldered it into the number plate light wiring !!
 
they are SMT components, so it was a solder printer that applied solder paste. Its poor quality inspection if it was passed!
The one that's sticking up is called a "tombstone" where one end flows to the solder and the other end has insufficient solder to flow, so lets go of the part.
The other parts in the middle of the board look as if the solder has flowed and flooded the board, that could be the cause, as if its shorting and not passing through some resistors that could cause them to carry more current and overheat.
If had this in the past with some LEDS, And the ones iv seen have been down to poor PCB design, ie. to many resistors, or laid out in silly ways.

If I was you id contact the seller (if you already haven't) and claim for damages as well as a refund of their product.

On another note, how long do you all think a pair of dectane led tail lights would last without any of the leds going out?

Am I right in thinking I can remove the resistor board from the lamp as don't need it anymore and the lamp will still work okay, or is it needed to stop the LEDs from blowing by reducing the voltage, if it's not needed I'll remove them so they won't overheat and cause anymore problems.

The resistors will be needed to reduce the voltage sadly. its a silly design really, even though there isn't any devices, there should still be some sort of heatsink to draw away the build up in temperature, especially in the small confined space.
Has it done any damage to the light housing in the boot? This happened to mine and it slightly melted

There's no damage to the light housing, as yet !!
I'm going to look into getting some genuine Audi led numberplate lamps and do away with these, I don't want them overheating and damaging anything, I think you can buy Audi ones for more a less the same price and a lot better build quality.

I have got them on my b7 fitted them a few months ago and there pretty good very very smart and super bright no errors also :)

I ended up just buying new lenses and cheap LED's they do the same and are pretty bright.

Chris199, I didn't have any errors either, I think it purely depends on the batch you get. well for damages anyway
 
Quick update. I received the side light bulbs this morning, went out and fitted them and the don't work correctly, they just flash flash few time then go off, next thing I get a bulb warning on my DIS.
Still haven't received the number plate bulbs, I hope I don't get probs with with them as well or it will be £30 down the pan.
 
Another update. I eventually received the number plate lights and fitted them, everything was good for the first 5 minutes of being switched on and then they started throwing up errors. Does anybody have any ideas why they would do this and not thrown errors straight away?

They're simply poor quality mate. I've had the same lights for 6 months and then all of a sudden i started to get bulb warning errors - most likely the built-in resistor has gone tits up. Messaged the ebay seller asking him to replace them under warranty but was told to get additional resistors!! I've now ordered the original Audi lights and resistor from Kufatec in Germany which i hope will be a trillion times better - the ebay ones were too bright (IMHO) and didn't spread the light evenly.

If the b7 ones are anything like my b6 ones I'd say forever as they've been in about two years now with no problems unlike my original Audi rear lights that kept dying.

Those ones look the business mate. Where does the adaptor cable go? Let us know how you get on. I've emailed ultra-hid on ebay but I dout they will do much about it.

The adaptor (resistor) is installed between the cars loom and the connection to the number plate light housing. You will need to remove the fabric trim from the boot, supposed to be very easy on a saloon but slightly tricky on an avant.

Interestingly I had a set of Canbus "error free" H11 LED's from the same supplier (Ultra-Hids) Only when I installed them they weren't error free and I had to pay out for an additional set of resistors.

About a month later one of the LED's starts throwing up errors again, even with the additional resistors. Their customer service was ok though as I was sent a replacement within a few days.

Currently overseas with work and the other bulb started throwing errors the day before I flew out (that was 6 weeks ago) and I'm not back for another month. Its just a PITA to have to keep taking the fog's off to sort the problem, and Im now seriously thinking of just switching back to halogens. Their H11's were not cheap!

Sounds to me like they have QA issues with their supplier.

BTW I now run an A6Q - its an old name

iv always used ultra hids but the past year iv noticed there products have gone downhill
I bought some ba15s reverse bulbs (canbus of course) only to find there not.... so 1 week later I get sent some resistors. which don't fit as there a loom kind, and the bulb sits in the housing.. So I sent a message and they replied "you will need the clip on resistors" now there wanting me to send the other looms back and pay an extra £6 to get the new ones...

needless to say its not happening.
