So i've had my A3 for a couple of months now and i'm starting to think i should've got an S3.

Whilst i'm really happy with the car, i'm just a bit dissapointed with the economy. This being one of the main reasons for trading in my Leon Cupra which was giving me around 28 mpg. After 1400 miles i'm only averaging around 36 mpg and i was expecting around the 45 mark.

Looking at finance figures, i could have got an S3 for the same monthly figures if i'd taken my PCP deal over 4 years rather than 3.

I think i miss the power more than i hoped i would and now i just dont know what to do.

I'm expecting a call back from a finance guy at my local Audi garage to see where i stand.

Will update if a decision is made.

Si :)

So you're disappointed with fuel consumption? You're thinking of an S3?

Would seem to me that the two are not connected. Now say you're disappointed with performance and I can understand the swap......

36mpg around town is probably about right, 36mpg if you are driving it rapidly is also about right. You've come from a Leon Cupra to a 1.4TFSI and now you say you want a car that does less mpg than what you get from the A3. Did you really research your purchase properly before you ordered?

Sorry, might seem like an odd thing to say. Just that i was expecting it to be so much better. I could live with paying out the money for petrol if i know its not going to be great economy. I'm sure i could get high 20's from an S3 driven normally, just seems that the 1.4 COD should've been better.

Other main reason for the 1.4 was so the wife had something more sensible to learn in but i can just buy her a wee car for her first 2 years.

I did all the research i thought i needed to do based on figures that i thought were accurate.

Never thought the wife would let me buy another powerful car as shes looking to learn and didnt fancy it.

The car is barely run in. Sounds like you are just using the fuel economy as an excuse.

I changed my last car because I missed the power. Now I have all the power I need but I miss the comfort of my last car.

It would cost me too much to change now. So saving up and waiting/planning.

How much does it cost to put a learner on the insurance of an S3 compared to running a second car?

I probably am a wee bit, i just miss the power :(

As a named driver, it wouldn't add to my premium.

I probably just need to learn to drive a different way to make the most of the power i do have. I'm sure i'll be fine in time :)

I had a 1.4 before my s3 and don't worry the economy will rise, mine used to do 40+ all the time my best was 58mpg really trying though lol. It'll improve once it's run in.

I've got the 1.4 TFSI (not the COD), currently around 10k miles and my long term economy is 43mpg. I should think your COD would easily hit that figure once it's run in... in about 8000 miles time!

As for performance, the engines are quite powerful given their size but yes, you do have to get used to a different driving style as the gears are quite short.

Thanks for the words of advice guys. This is my first new car so never had to run one in before.

Will probably stick with the COD and see how the first year goes. If i still feel the same next January i will probably be looking to change it.

Si.

My S3 over 1400 miles is averaging 24.8 mpg.

If you get an S3 and it averages 24 will you swap out for a RS6? If so, I say go for it!
