Hi All,

Ewan from Dundee,

I used to be on here a bit a few years back when I had my Imola Yellow 8l S3 which I Sold as I needed house funds, I've had a couple of RWD Mazda sports cars, an A4 2.8 V6 Quattro since but always wanted another 8l, I wasn't happy with the examples of S3s within my budget so have opted for an 2000 8l A3 Quattro 1.8T, 61k miles and in far above average condition all round, I picked this up 2 weeks ago.

The car came with a Rica engineering remap (any further info?) and S3 Cat back which the owner claimed to be 215hp, as its a pre facelift AJQ 180hp engine I think it only has a K03 so not sure what power it really has but either way its only a number, The car pulls well and from memory doesn't feel like it would be far behind my stock 210 S3, I think it seems to boost lower down and with a bigger kick but runs out that bit sooner in the revs.
As the car still has a standard appearance I've decided to go for a stealth stage2 tune keeping with the K03 & drivers side throttle layout, this will allow me to fit parts as I go (its a daily) while keeping all the final options open (stock K03s, Hybrid or K04-001)

Anyway further mods have started this weekend with the fitment of a Toyosports 3" downpipe & decat which coupled to the existing standard S3 exhaust is a great vaule budget exhaust option IMO.

I'll be getting the unspeakable out the way first before doing any more but will be following the forum in the mean time for more ideas etc.

Ewan.

Hi ewan, welcome back, nice car. Look forward to seeing you at some of the local meets. :) x

I'm pretty sure being the AJQ 180 engine, it will have the KO3s turbo as standard. If its about 215 bhp I'm more inclined to think that, as KO3 runs out of puff at about 195bhp.

Easy way to check if its a KO3s is to see If there is a silencer on the cold side of the turbo, failing that, check the little blue tag on the turbo itself for the part number.

I'd be interested to see if it has a ko3s as I have the same model and engine, could you clarify te cold side silencer?

I've yet to have a proper look but i know theres no silencer although I think you get the Ko3s without them, and I'm pretty sure all pre facelift/pre 2001 A3 1.8t quattro have Ko3 that's why I havn't really looked.

a letter explaining the differences between K03 turbos from Borgwarner who make them

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All the following turbos have the same installation dimensions and
thermodynamical performance. The differences are only in the actuator that
opens the turbine bypass valve:
K03-011 (5303 988 0011) 150 hp, 65 N actuator
K03-026 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-035 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-044 150 hp, 65 N actuator
K03-045 156 hp (Ibiza Cupra), 85 N actuator with 2 ports
K03-049 150 hp (Sharan/Alhambra), 65 N actuator
The 180 hp versions have an actuator with a higher opening force due to the
higher exhaust gas pressure (which is a consequence of the higher boost
pressure). Otherwise the valve would be pushed open by the exhaust gas
pressure.

The following turbos are a further development (since 2000) and have an
improved and slightly larger compressor while using the same turbine (still
with the same installation dimensions):
K03-052 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-053 150 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-058 150 hp/180 hp, 85 N actuator

Consequentially, putting a 180 hp turbo on a 150 hp engine will not bring
about any change in performance, but putting on a K03-052/053/058 instead of
the older versions will bring a slight improvement in engine efficiency.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure if any use, but made for interesting reading

1.8t quattro;
-AJQ engines have a K03.
-ARY engines have a K03S

No Nick, not true at all. There are silenced and unsilenced K03s turbos. Also the silencer is on the hot side.

k03 "s" doesn't actually exist, it is just a name given to a certain group of part numbers.

Hi Rossco,

I think I might of seen your car about, good to see another local member. If you need sombody local to look after your car I've just recently finished 10 years employment as a Technician at Audi but I'm now working at Kevin Pirie and Son on East Dock Street, if you ever need anything just pop in and ask for myself.

Jardo, it gives me great pleasure to tell you that you're wrong. The silencer is on the cold side (comp housing), it's not on the turbine housing (exhaust housing)....

I was clearly drunk when I wrote the aforementioned post, you obviously know I know that. As does everyone else.
