Annoyed... Beat by a BMW diesel. Diesel Future

So my friend just got a new 120D series diesel at 177BHP, it was very even, then just completely overtook me...

I was slightly disappointed tbh, i was returning around 9MPG and he was getting 60MPG odd.

I think i need to get one of the new (ish) 330D's for my next car :( Bad times.

Are we all in agreement that diesels are beginning to be the new power on the road while returning a great MPG?

If it helps you feel any better, my 170 (remapped to around 200) had a close call with a new 1.0l fiesta. I should of left it standing yet I was only pulling away slowly. What's going on!?

But for audi's theres a 3litre V6 diesel A4 with like 6 second 0-60, is there anything else similar?
 
The only way a 177bhp Derv should be pulling away from a 197bhp Petrol is in-gear.

From a standing start you should have had a big enough lead to pull away on top end power! there's no way he should have caught you... so either your car has a fault or you're not driving it as well as it can be driven. :sob:

well i had 2 extra people in mine, maybe there is a fault :( caus i was at top rev's. its going for remap on sat soo il see what dyno says. my car has done 125k.
 
2 extra people is a massive performance issue.

I know when I have any more than 1 passenger in the car it's much much slower.

Might aswell have stuck a HGV sticker on the back, these are heavy cars unladen, let alone 2/3 up.
 
even when, im up to decent speed already, i thought it didnt matter as much when rolling
 
No wonder Insurance is so expensive.

Wow, a whole 5 years. Anyway, not really having a go - I used to race people when I was young and daft too. Now I keep it to the track (and my Audi is too slow in any case) as I have a bit more of a picture of my own mortality (and some dead friends and relations).

In the (admittedly highly unlikely) case of you getting caught, racing on the road's also quite a serious conviction.

There's a reason police cars are high end BMW diesels haha. You can't mock diesels anymore!

Considering the high % of accidents in this time for new drivers, i was only saying i am clearly not one of them. i realise compared to my gran whos never had an accident in 50 years is nothing, but im just saying.
 
No probs - I added a bit to the post in edit - and fair play to you.

On topic (ish) my last two cars (pre A3) were 2.2 Mondeo - 155 hp but loadsa torque - updated version of that engine is in Jag XF now, and Jag XJ 2.7 twin turbo TD - 200 (and a bit) HP, a stack of torque and beyond fast enough for me at least. Not as fast as wrecklessly driven Astra van, obviously, but what is?

In comparison my A3 is slow, thirsty, harsh, noisy and has terrible ride - but at least I prefer the seats and the climate unit :)

Seems like you need to retake your driving lessons if that's happening.

Bet you looked like an idiot infront of your mates ;)! Diesels naturally have bigger pulling power at lower revs anyway. but start falling over at higer revs, that's where petrol gain. :)

Returning 9MPG too... I don't even return that with my S3 which is sitting at 264 BHP O.O... Something wrong here.
 
When I had not long bought my Civic Type R (EP3) a mate had bought an A3 2.0 TDI 140BHP. We were driving back from an event and got onto the autobahn then floored it. I overtook him fairly easily at the start but he stayed close behind for the rest of run, he had no problems keeping up. I was very disappointed!

type r tops out near to 145, a3 2.0 tdi stock would top nearer to 133

12mph at those kinda speeds isnt much difference though lol

Diesels are much easier to drive than petrols as they have different power/torque delivery. Time to look into your car and see how you can improve your driving I'm afraid. Look at the power graph of a 2.0tfsi engine and you will find that you certainly didnt shift in the 'perfect shift' zone therefore lost a lot of boost and pulling power. With diesels you get longer gears and 'wider' torque range through out the rev range up to around 3-3.5k so its very hard to messed up the gearing and easy to drive the car with 100% potential. I found it when I had my diesel, it was very quick initially and I loved it but then when I wanted push it to the limits there was nothing more than I could get while driving it normally, same feel, same boost, same torque no excitement. BOOORING! With my S3 S2+ when I drive it normally I get same back, nice and smooth ride but once opened up the throttle god my hat falls off and it scares me. Not sure how you get 9mpg but I can easily get 32mpgs motorway and 25 around town or 18-21 when really hammer it.
 
I meant i see my meter read 9mpg with my foot to the floor, the whole journey ended up being like 18.

And il be interested to see the dyno printout after the remap, i normally shift before 6500 because it just seems to die out around there anyway.

Other thing is that your cars done 125k so all the valves are covered in soot making it slower and less power.

Is there some fluid i can flush through to help this? or is it a case of taking something off and cleaning?
In the service i just had, the garage said they flushed something through it, i will find out tomorrow as my cars in for S3 brake setup being fitted.

Or maybe my car checked out? The new 1.0l does 0-60 in about 8.8s I think, and stock 170 is 7.6 so not a huge difference, but after being remapped it should definitely be leaving it in the dust.
 
If the interior was better, the 335d would be pretty much the perfect all-rounder. Get an estate and it's even better. DPF delete and a map will get you 360bhp and 540lbft.

These new BMW's seem limited I think my mate maxed a new 116d at 125mph but had more revs to go. Audis are heavy cars tbh im sure ill get thrashed by fiesta st and corsa sris if I were to race them in my bkd a3

I think the embarrassment of being beat by a diesel is becoming a thing of the past
 
BTW - I knew a few car modders back in the day who used to try and make their car a replica of a lowly model just for the fun of it - so that Fiesta might have been bogus :)

My best Q car was Passat VR6 Estate - on steel wheels and nothing obviously different from the 1.9 diesel......(which was slow in those days).

The 3.0tdi has massive potential, it's only held back by the clutch/dmf combo or auto gearbox on it's limits... I have 300Bhp/600Nm+ on a 2.5 tdi, i had to upgrade clutches and engine/gearbox mounts to get the car to cope with the torque...Gave a prodrive sti subaru a good run for the money a few weeks ago- would have shown a nice pair of sooty tailpipes if the car did not hit overboost in 4th gear ! The new biturbo 3.0tdi has a twin plate clutch and 300Bhp as standard, throw a remap and hybrid turbo on it and it will scare many "sports" cars, of course they will smoke more so folk will say "yuk" !
 
I suspect the 60mpg was for average journey he's made, not instant when he's caning you tbh & who cares if its a diesel & its beating you, suppose you'd commit suicide if it was an electric car lmao
