I've had my new A3 1.6tdi sport sportback for a couple of weeks now and am disappointed by how unrefined the engine is. Many reviews mentioned how smooth and refined this engine is but I am finding it much rougher than my previous 2.0tdi. Especially under load or acceleration there is a marked diesel clatter. Anyone else finding this?
The mpg is not great either. My previous 2.0tdi averaged 54.7mpg over 3 years and 70k miles of mostly motorway driving. At the moment I'm just getting low 50s from my 1.6. I know it will improve as the mileage increases and the engine beds in but it seems a long way from the low 60s I was hoping for when deciding to go for the 1.6 rather than a 2.0.

1.6tdi has less horse power than 2.0tdi, so I guess the 1.6 at high speeds, has to work more than 2.0. It "suffers" more than an 2.0... just a guess...

I have a 1.6 and i find to to be very refined but was also dissapointed with the mpg. It really seems to have improved now that i have more miles on the clock and the weather is warmer.

It will improve... Mine has just turned 2500 miles and the economy has improved from low 50's to high 50's/low 60's and I've seen almost 70mpg on long runs...

One thing I have noticed is an irritating rasp under light acceleration though and if it's not used for a couple of days, it runs like a tractor for a few seconds when started!
