Had a look at a rs3 a few weeks ago at a main dealer..impressed with the build quality & find the normal seats quite good, but don't like the rns-e satnav...it's really dated & it ain't touchscreen..find that my Vw rns510 much better..anyone swapped there satnav for a aftermarket one?didnt get to drive the car as it started to snow.

Had you driven the car Dan you wouldn't be talking about the dated sat-nav....... Prepare to be overwhelmed........

i know where you are coming from i thought the same thing about the sat nav when i went from a mk5 r32 with touchscreen to a 09 s3 with a sat nav i hated . reason being you could not listen to a cd when using the satnav as the map disk had to be in . my s3 did not have a cd changer but maybe it is different in the rs3 .

There are two SD slots behind the screen which can hold 8GB SD cards. This allows mp3's to be played through the RNS-E with full album and track listings etc on the screen. I find thats the best way to store and play music.

The RNS-E is very dated though ... shame they never updated to touch screen.

It actually takes two 32gb cards class 10.. PM NHN he does decent ones at good prices..

+1....... I've rarely used it to play music let alone anything else... This car is all about that stonking engine/gearbox/Quattro combo

you can do all of that and more in the q7.. But the dashboard/centre console is the size of Buckingham palace's fireplace, and of course it perform nowt like an rs3! Cd changer is a glovebox option on the rs3, but it replaces the ami, so I guess it's about not being too fussy in the end.

So you can't listen to CDs with the satnav running??only on memory cards?

Get all your music off youtube and stick it on an SD card, hours of it.no hassle

I agree.I'm working on a nice lttle tune from 4 to 5 at low revs.

unless, as per my previous post, you get the cd changer in glovebox option...................

As others have commented, the satnav becomes irrelevant once you get driving, unless you're lost obviously.

I had the RNS510 previously and it is much better, with 7 digit postcode etc. and ability to use the CD player at the same time. I've had issues with the RNSE microphone and the fact the the woman's voice sounds retarded, and generally find the unit to be quite annoying. However, I now turn the volume off and follow the visual directions from the display and console, unless I'm driving in a city - problem solved.

Snow? Pfft - have winter tyres!

Correct. I have an iPod nano in the glove box permanently, along with an SD card with my daughter's nursery rhymes, for those quality journeys!

SatNav can be viewed in heads up display between rev counter and speedometer..... Sorry for the poor image but I was driving at 200mph:eyebrows: only joking.........

In addition a 3D type image with more journey information such as distance to next exit and all that usual information can be displayed on the screen/console of the head unit in the dashboard at the same time

This is of course all pretty irrelevant once you've driven the RS3....... You'd except a homing pigeon option if it meant you get to keep the car:readit: now where oh where to store the pigeon.......

no mate,u where doing 205mph...cheers for the pic...was wondering if I would still get the screen on the dashboard if I changed it for a aftermarket satnav?

AFAIK there is no aftermarket sat nav that displays turn info on the dashboard screene, thyere are a few that show radio/CD info but that's all.

I doubt it, since it is all linked to the Audi interface. For me, the satnav is tolerable if you just turn the volume off when you don't need it. It's a very minor component of an awesome car.

On a side note can any of you change from Media to Radio using the MFSW/mode button?

Lets be honest though, you have a very modern car, but you want to use a fairly old technology aka cd to listen to music, when the rns-e supports allot better facility as such, I cant see the point in using cd's anyway with sd slots that can hold hundreds/thousands of tracks now, just seems a little pointless.

Nav dvd is best left in anyway as to not get scratched upon removal & kind of shelters the laser head from dust particles a little bit, so doesnt burn on as much.

RNS-E for me is a good all round unit, it fits in the dash well, works with other systems, it does have a dated nav postcode system admittedly, which I too wish they would update, but it works, simple fact works fairly well for me & I've used it across 5 countries with only a small blip due to older map dvd used or new roads built.

It would be nice to have the rns510 featureset tbh, but it does a good job nonetheless.

Is there any way to change the 'homescreen' graphics when you power up the car?

So if you think CD's are old Technology, how old do you think SD Cards are? I know they are still being used, but you cannot condemn people for using old technology when SD Cards are now 13 yrs old! So who is advocating that customers using this new tangled technology called the SD card, when people would have been better buying the the MP3 connection of the USB Connection.
Then at the end of the day it is there choice. If they think the when it comes to selling their car in the future someone is more likely to buy it because it has a gramma phone in it or a record player and not a DAB, then that is their choice. It is not up to us to mock there choices.... Just maybe laugh at how bizarre their choices seem to us.

cheers for the link.

Is there anyway you can upload a picture or graphics of your own?
I've been on audiforum.us for over 8 years, and in all that time nobody has managed to do it - so I guess the answer has to be no.

it always seems a shame, however convenient, to use mp3's instead of CDs. The sound quality is just not in the same league, and the better/crisper the sound system, the more it shows up, particularly on lower bit rate mp3s.........?

I'm the unlucky/lucky one then. Mine is a French spec so satnav was an option I didn't even know existed (when I found out about it, thought it was too expensive). I have the symphony 6 CD changer inside the front dash (plays digital format like mp3) and I replaced the iphone connection (I don't give money to apple) and spec'ed the usb port. Very useful, but their manual is wrong and it took me some time to find out how to play from usb.

I used to be young in the past so have CDs and burnt CDs.

Damn, have a bad day or something, words like condemn & mock are far from what my post was discussing, so god knows where you pulled them out from, chill fella, nobodies flaming anyone here.

If you had actually understood the context of the post instead of reading friction into it, where none existed, you would see the point I was making, which was, cd's only allow a limited amount of storage, whereas sd cards can store a fair bit more which means you don't have to constantly swap media.

Also if using cd's, you'd have to store these in a limited space glovebox or side pocket which would mean using a fairly bulky cd storage wallet, but look at the size of sd cards, you could store hundreds of these in a wallet & imagine the amount of tunes you can get on them, if its a mk1 rns, its about 4-500 tunes, if its a mk2 rns then its thousands, think that's a very valid point to make.

Also, the nav unit uses the same drive for cd's or nav dvd if no changer fitted, so to take the nav dvd out constantly would more than likely cost you the dvd from scratches etc which are £200 from audi, when convenience alone is worth using the sd slots for for increased storage & the nav dvd doesn't get touched very often or at all & therefore maintains its quality.
