Hi.
Are prepping the car for track day season.
Need a new sett of front brake discs. (have installed a complete S3 OEM kit)
I would prefer x-drilled once. Any recomondations?

I have found these on eBay.

Is there an option for the S3 setup wher the disc is a two piece part? Disc is screwed on to a aluminum center/hat like on bigger brake kits. Looks better and is maybe lighter.
Anyone knows this?

Thanks

I've never seen a floating arrangement for the S3 discs. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course! ;)

If you were looking for something to abuse on the track, I'd think that a 4 piston setup with some floating discs would be the better option? I know they're more expensive but would be better suited to the track I'd say. :)

I would like to know What drilled discs would be perfect for a set of OEM front S3 brakes also ...

ive heard drilled disks on a non track car is asking for trouble diggz. go for grooved if you just want looks.

I had the EBC Turbogroove discs that were grooved and dimpled. Looked awesome and were better for fast road use. Made a noise like a cricket when you used the anchors though, so long as you can put up with that. ;)

Hi.
Drilled disc I great for looks and hot brake gas evacuation on the track abuse.
Grooved discs are not recommended for a everyday running car. They make a noise during braking.

Havent heard anything bad of the drilled once! Porsche, Merc's and BMWs have drilled as OEM, can't see this is a problem.

You'll very rarely see a race car with x-drilled discs, 99% will be grooved.
Both my friend and I have had x-drilled discs and they have both cracked between the holes.
AP do a 2-piece disc for the std S3 345mm set up but I think they are £800!

Thanks crunchie. This is the experience from you members to get. Reg. the cracking, I think I have heard something about this before. Mmmm maby just go for OEM solide disc then. Any link to the AP 2-piece disc? Just for funn....

What will be the best big brake kit for small money.....? Anyone with tip or/and experience?

Best way to get good brakes on reasonable money is to drop DaveB1970 a line.

Errmm..no they don't.

I've run grooved discs as well as drilled, and neither make significant amounts of noise.

Don't ever go for appearance over function...it only leads to wishing you hadn't.....go for the best you can afford,as well as something that you know will work.

I don't like grooved discs. It's either drilled or nothing.

I had some Black Dimond disc witch where grooved and drilled, remember them making some noise. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.

I totaly agree on the " appearance over function" I am normaly not like that.
My S3 brake kit will be installed soon. Will be useing/testing them this season. If they fade ill change them. Got a good deal on a complet setup for front and rear, so had to grab them.

Ill think I go for OEM and see what happens.

Hope you're happy with them.

I found the S3's brakes were OK up to about Stg2/2+ by which time they were definitely a bit behind the car as a whole.

This is just my opinion,so don't read it as anything but that.....the calipers are very heavy, and the entire system is prone to fade when used hard.

I've used APRacing and Alcon setups previously, and currently have a VWRacing kit on my S3,and the grooved discs have lasted quite well, with no squealing etc,but are now in need of replacement with a set of AP rotors.

Choosing a decent set of pads is also important, and I have to add that trying a set of EBC redstuff pads was a waste of time and money...they DID squeal like mad,and offered no improvement in feel or fade.

I always use the Ferodo DS2500 pads for track day us. This is the best option when racing.
Have also bought some caliper slide stifening from Tyrol Sport. This makes a huge improvment on the feel. This will be used on the S3 setup to.
See my thread on this. http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-...9354-tyrolsport-rigid-caliper-slider-rcs.html

What will be the best BBK setup where you do not need to change the master sylinder? 4/6/8 pot?
have been looking at the TT RS and RS3 setup are they any good or over priced gimic parts?

You really should drop DaveB a line.

I think that 6 pot is about as far as you can go with the stock MC,and whilst the RS brakes are good, there are better, but he's very good for advice.

I've used Mintex,Ferodo and Pagid, and found Pagid are probably the best, but it depends on what brake feel you like.

The turbo groove brakes definitely make a hell of a noise under use. That's only because the grooves run right to the edge and the noise must be the air actually escaping from under the pads! I didn't mind though, it wasn't something as bad as squealing or anything. I ended up liking the noise actually! Haha.

Drilled discs have no functional use other than looks and in extreme cars weight loss. They have no function of increasing SA or dispersing heat. And I have seen a few cases where the disc has cracked between the drilled holes. Go for grooved!

I think that's probably a bit of an over-generalisation as there are plenty of very well made cross-drilled rotors around that give no problems, such as from AP,Brembo, and a host of the ceramics around, and the drilled APs that I've used previously had no such problems on a fairly extreme road car.
.
Cheap or poorly made ones though will be a different matter, and that applies to both drilled and grooved rotors.

Oh yeh im not saying that every drilled rotor will crack, but if you don't care about looks then there is no reason to have them. It is just a common miss understanding I think that the holes are for heat loss.

Yeah, a local specialist near me has produced a set of two-piece discs for the R32, Leon Cupra, S3 etc... Turner race developments south west UK car tuning company - speak to Dan.
