Is the SAT NAV worth the cost?
I did NOT spec this om my A3 as I found out on my Q5 the maps were 20 months out of date when the car was delivered (February 2012) I asked the dealer about this and was told that was the current release and I would have to pay when the next release was available cost of 200 pounds, I will fight this when the time arrives.

So if you have or looking to spec Audi SAT NAV find out the last release date of what is being installed in your car then decide from there.

I feel it's worth the cost but it's very subjective and many feel their Tomtoms are just as good (they're just wrong lol )

If you're going to fight the upgrade cost on your Q5 then there is some precedent for this. There was an issue several years back whereby Audi were advertising their cars as having TMC traffic info and yet this didn't work in the UK for licensing reasons. They finally sorted this towards the end of 2006 and announced that all cars would now support it. The problem was you needed the new 2007 maps disc to make it work and many cars ordered and delivered at the end of 2006, including mine, came with the older discs. Audi said such customers would have to pay to upgrade to the new discs!

Such a stink was kicked up that they eventually relented and offered the 2007 map discs free of charge to anyone who'd bought a new car with nav in the previous three years!

Yes you have valid points there, I just wish the dealer sales person is fully aware of the software installed in cars like the NAV options. The sales team should be explaining to customers the cost of purchase, update price and the latest version/date of maps installed and not expect everything to be within 6 months. As I mentioned my Q is 20 months out of date, if I knew this I would never taken this option or made sure the update would be free, then the choice would be mine there after.
As i mentioned on a different post the French car companies are using Garmin as SAT options hence the price and updates can then be controlled by the customer rather than the car manufacturer, also the shear volume of users will keep the price down on these units.
As you mentioned regarding my use of the Tomtom I only need to pay 60 pounds per year and have 4 updates, that is still better than the Audi system, but its nice to look at even you know the roads and the map is not available.. but as i am an old hand I still use my UK atlas as the planner because SAT was not around 30 years ago (ha ha) old habits die hard.
The hardware stuff is easy colour, wheels, seats and the rest.

Audi are moving more towards online mappings anyway with google maps I reckon, which is constantly (or should be) updated live, which is much better than any system via sd, cd, dvd medium, but for me I find the google maps rather uninspiring tbh

Really? I find Google maps to be the most accurate mapping system there is. Nothing i've seen matches them for coverage. It would be great if you could download google updates. There's been times where the audi 2012 maps let me down badly and googlemaps on my phone has saved the day.

The only maps I find that are as good as Google and sometimes updated even quicker as those from Open Street Mapping. These are free and entire country maps can be download to mobile phones and tablets that run the Android operating system. This stops the need for a constant data internet connection. Use the app Mapdroyd for just the maps and OsmAnd for mapping and route directions.

TBH I find accuracy & implementation doesnt neccessarily work on this one, but each to there own.
